UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
THOMAS O. WILLIAMS AND VVILBR F. HUBBELL, OF WAUSEON, OHIO.
IM PROVEM ENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,620, (lated April 16, 18715; application filed February 23, 1878.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS O. WILLIAMS and VILBUR F. HUBBELL', of Wauseon, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Farm-Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being' had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specitication, and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of our invention applied.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken through the gate. Fig. 3 is a top view of the slotted plate and of the post attachments,
-and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the latch-plate.
This invention has relation to improvements in hinged gates.
The object of the invention is to devise a gate that may be readily opened from either side by a horseinan without dismounting, and as readily closed, land that will latch or unlatch itself automatically in the act of closing or opening.
The nature of my invention will be fully described hereinafter.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates au ordinary slatted gate, closing a gap between the posts B B. The post Bis recessed at a., and provided at that point with a (.loubly-inclined latch-plate, b, having at its apex a vertical transverse notch, t', with which a latch, b', upon the gate engages when the gate is closed. The gate, at its lower portion,
is attached to the post B by an ordinaryv hinge, c, and its upper part provided with a pintle-like extension, d, that passes through an angular slot, e, in a horizontal metallic plate, g, projecting from the post B' toward post B, and secured thereto by means ot' its extensions g. The angle of the slot c is directly over the hinge c, and is provided with a slight recess, t', into which the pintle d drops when the gate is in line with its posts, and the latch then engages the latch-plate b. G represents a wooden bar of suitable length, secured to the top of post B at right angles thereto, and projecting equally at both sides thereof. To the ends of this bar are pivoted the depending manipulatinglevers D, that .are connected with the pintle l ofthe gate by the rods G. These rods are provided at their contiguous ends with eyes l, into which the pintle d aforesaid is loosely passed. The eyes l do not bind upon the pintle in any manner; consequently the swinging of the gate is in no manner impeded.
To open the gate, a rider seizes upon the lever D, and thrusts its power end toward the gate with sufficient force to throw the pintle l into the farther end ot the slot e. This heing accomplished, the gateassunies a position out of the perpendicular, and its end is raised sufliciently to disengage the latch and latchplate, so that by letting go ot' the lever it swings open automatically.
The gate is closed by thrusting the second lever toward it until the pintle passes beyond the apex of the angular slot. It then swings to, and its latch falls into the notch of the latch-plate, and the closing of the gate is et'- fected.
It is evident that the angularly-slotted plate may be L-shaped, and secured to the face of post B', instead of to its top.
It is evident, also, that the pintle, instead of being a part ofthe gate, may forni an attachment thereto, and that it may be made of wood or metal, as may be the slotted plate aforesaid.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with thepost and its rigid extended arms O, and the angularly-slotted plate g, oi' the gate having the hinge-pintle d extending through said plate, the levers D, pivoted to the rigid extended arlns ot' the gatepost, and the connections G, pivoted to said lever D, adapted to engage the pintle, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our naines in the`
