This invention relates to devices for sharpening razor blades and more particularly to the pro uction of small, power driven Sharpeners, particularly adapted for home use.
The object of this invention is to provide a small machine, the operation `of which imposes upon the user a minimum mechanical knowledge, skill or care, and which can be used for sharpening razor blades without actually detachingvthe blade from `the holder of the blade.
AI further object of this invention is to provide `a razor sharpening device which, upon adjustment, is practically automatic, insofar as the actual dressing of the edge is concerned.
A furtherobject of 4this invention is to provide a device of the character described, `wherein are mounted a pair of honing rollers and a pair of stropping rollers, either pair of which, as desired, may be brought into `driving relationship with an electric motor by the mere manual movementof a handle on the outside of, the device, movable through. a deiinite predetermined path.

The improved razor blade sharpening device comprises a casing or housing I having a base 2,

Within thesemicylindrical chamber 5 and substantially coincident with the cylindrical axis thereof. is journaled a frame supporting shaft 9 for rotation or oscillation. The left-hand end of the shaft 9 may be journaled in the side wall l in a smooth cylindrical bearing I0, but the right-hand end of the shaft shown in Fig. l is preferably journaled in a sleeve I I which in turn is mounted to rotate in a separable journal box I2 as will be referred to again below.
Upon the shaft 9 is mounted a roller carrying frame I3 the same consisting preferably of two parallel rigid side plates Iii and I5 the ends of which are connected by tie rods or bars I6 which are substantially alike, holding the side plates I4 and l5 in spaced parallel relationship and, together with the side plates, forming a substantial rectangular frame I3, through which extends the frame supporting shaft 9, the frame being rigidly secured to the side shaft 9 to rotate or oscillate therewith, as by set screw I'I.
The shaft 9 preferably passes through the frame I3 midway between the ends thereof vand preferably substantially midway between the front and rear edges of. the side plates I4 and I5 so that the frame and the parts carried thereby are in ,a substantially balanced symmetrical rela- I. tionship with respect to the shaft 9.
Mounted for free rotation within the frame I3 and'on axes substantially parallel to the shaft 9 aretwo pairs of razor-blade dressing rollers, the term dressing being employed herein to define the step ofhoning and/ or stropping. In the preferred construction of this invention there will be employedone pair of honing rollers and one' pair of stropping rollers. For convenience, the lowerpairoffrollers I8, I9 (Figs. 1 and 2) will be considered to be honing rollersand to be provided with a :suitable abrasive surface, and the uppenpair, 20, 2|, will be considered to be stropping rollers and to be provided with a leather or similar surface.
Referring-first to the honing rollers I8 and I9, the roller I8 is mounted on a shaft 22 which is journaled in smooth cylindrical bearings 23, 23 in the=side plates I4 and I5 respectively, but the otherhoning roller I9 is preferably mounted on a shaft 24 which is journaled in sliding'boxes 25-25 respectively fitting in slots 25 in the side platesld and I5 to move toward and-'away from the axis of the roller I8.
Each sliding box 25 is preferably acted upon by a. spring 2l normally to hold the roller I9 yieldinglyfpressed against the `roller I8. The tension of the springs may be varied by the adjusting screws 28. The .rollers I8 and I9 are respectively provided with gears 29 and 39 which intermesh ,to insure the Irotation of the rollers I8 and I9 in opposite directions without slippage and at the same angularspeedof rotation.
Now referring tothe vstropping rollers 20 and 2 I theroller-JZ is mounted upon a shaft 3I which, like the roller I8 is mounted in cylindrical bearings 3-2-32fin the side plates I4, I5 respectively and the roller :2I Vis mounted on a shaft in sliding boxes/.34, movable in slots- S5 toward and'away fromthe .roller 29, provided with springs 36 and with adjusting screws 91, like the springs and screws.2'l and 29 respectively of the rollers I8 and I9, but tending to hold the roller 2l yieldinglypressed against the roller 25. The roller 20 is .a lsoprovided with a gear 38 meshing with agear 39 carried by the roller 2|.
Theside 'wall 'I is'preferably provided with a bearingll fora stud shaft 4I, the inner end of which carries a pinion 92 and the outer end of which is provided with a pulley 93 connected by a belt 44 to the driving pulley 45 of a small electric motor 4B, preferably mounted on the base 2. The pair of rollers I9 and I9 are preferably mounted in the roller carrying frame I3 at the same distance from the shaft 9 that the rollers 2li-2l are. In other words, the pairs of rollers are symmetrically mounted on diametrically opposite sides of the frame supporting shaft 9 and the shafts of all of the said rollers I9, 2l] preferably lie in a plane passing through the axis of. the shaft 9.
Also supporting on the frame supporting shaft 9 is a blade supporting and guiding frame 41 consisting of two side plates IIS and 99, the plate 48 lying between the side plate I4 of the frame I3, and the wall l, and the side plate 99 lying between the side plate I5 of the frame I3, and the side wall 8. The shaft 9 passes through said plates preferably' midway between the ends thereof and midway between the front and back edges of the side plates 48 and 49 so that these plates are also symmetrically mounted on the shaft 9. The guiding frame fil also includes a rigid blade supporting bar 59 rigidly connecting the side plates 58 and 59 at the front lower edges thereof, the
samebeing provided with a slot 5I therethroughl in substantially `horizontal alinernent with theline The opposite edges of the plates 48 and 4,9 are preferably connected together at the other end of the frame il by a blade supporting bar 53, said bar being provided with a slot 511 like'the slot 5I. of bar 59. The frame Ill also includes a tie rod similar to the tie rod 52. porting bar 59 is diametrically opposite the blade supporting bar 53 and the tie rod 52 is diametrically opposite the tie rod 55.
The side plate i9 may be and preferably is provided with a smooth bearing 55 through which the shaft 9 passes, the blade supporting frame being rotatable with respect to said shaft, but the other side plate 59 is preferably provided with the sleeve Il through' which the shaft 9 passes, the sleeve being rotatable in the split bearing or journal box I2.
The free end of the shaft 9 at the right-hand end (see Fig'. Ll) is provided with a lever 57 rigidly secured thereto in any suitable manner as, by the pin 58, and the upper or free end of the lever Thus the blade supl 5l is preferably provided with'a handle 59 having which the plunger G9 enters and fits when the handleA or lever 5l is swung to its vertical position and the said side plate 9 is also provided with a diametrically opposite recess 55 into which the plunger similarly fits when the handle is swung to its lower position. By withdrawing the plunger from either recess 65 or 55' by pulling on theA knob 52, the lever 5l is unlocked from its stationary relationship with respect to the casing and may swing through an arc of thus rotating the shaft 9 and the parts carried thereby through a like arc.
The face of the side plate 89 is also preferably provided with an upper stop pin 55 and a lower stop pin 69 adjacent the recesses 55 and 65 respectively to engage the side of the plunger 60 when it reaches the limit of its swing in either direction.
The sleeve is provided with an adjusting arm 61 rigidly secured thereto by a set screw 68 and the upper end of the arm 61 is provided with a head 69 having a transverse slot 10 therein,'and With an adjusting screw 1| extending substantially longitudinally of the slot 10. The screw 1| passes through an end 12 of the head 69 and terminates in a knurled head 13. The said screw 1| passes through a slightly vertically elongated slot 14 in the end 12, so that the free end of the screw is capable of slight movement in a vertical The lever 51 is also provided with a rotatable pin or stud 15 having a head 18 whichis provided with a screwthreaded hole extending transversely therethrough and into which the adjusting screw 8| is threaded. 'The pin or stud "I5 is fitted into a cylindrical bearing in the lever 51. The screw 1| is retained in the end 12 of the head by a collar or washer 'i1 rigidly secured to the screw in any suitable manner.
From the above it will be plain that when the 'H lever 51 is swung from one extreme position to the other, the lever or arm 81 moves therewith loecause they are connected together by the screw 1| andthe pin 15, and that the arm 61 and with it the guiding frame 41 may be moved or rotated through a small angle with respect to the lever 51 and frame I3 by turning the adjusting screw 1|. This adjustment of the blade supporting frame 41 with respect to the roller carrying frame `I3 is for the purpose of adjusting the blade supporting bars 50 and 53 nearer to or further away from the line of the contact between the pair of rollers I3 and I3 and the pair of rollers 20 and 2| respectively.
, In order to permit of this adjustive movement of the frame 41 with respect to the frame I3, the edges of the side plates |4--I5 are provided with recesses 18-18 adjacent the guide bars 50 and 53, and with the notches I9 adjacent the tie rods 52 and 55. In order that the pinion 42 may be positioned directly below the frame supporting shaft 3 and that the stud shaft 4| of the said pinionv may not interfere with the semicircular movements of the frames I3 and 41 around the axis of the shaft I3, the side plate I4 of the roller carrying frame 3 and the side plate 48 of the blade supporting frame 41 are provided with clearance recesses 80-80 respectively extending above and below the bearing of said side plate I4 on the said shaft 9 deeply enough to permit of the semirotation of the frames and the free adjustive movement of the `blade supporting frame 41.` y f Y Y y An electric switch 8| is preferably positioned in the compartment 6 under the semicircular chamber 5 and preferably comprises a cylindrical casing 82 of bakelite or other insulating material, l
the forward end of which is rmly secured in the front wall 3 with its front end preferably iiush with the front surface 4. Within the casing 82 is a plunger 83 preferably also of insulating material carrying at its rear end, a metal cap 84 preferably at all times in sliding contact with the stationary contact 05 to which is attached the wire 85 ofthe motor circuit 85.
Connected to the ring or cap 84 is a stem 81 sliding vthrough the end of the casing 82. Between the said end of the casing 82 and the plungspring. 88 normally tending to force the plunger to the right (Fig. 2) so that the blade 89 secured to the forward end of the plunger 83 projects beyond the smooth vertical surface 4 of the vertical wall 3 and so that the end of the stem 81 is clear of and out of engagement with and between the two spring arms 90, forming the sta- 5 tionary electrical contact rigidly secured to the insulation block 9| and connected by the wire 86' to the circuit. The free end of the stem 81 projecting through the end of the casing 82 forms the movable contact point cooperating with the 10 stationary contact 90.
In Figs. 6 to 9 the razor is shown in greater detail than it can be shown in Fig. 2 because they are drawn on a much larger scale.

When the top is vbeing raised, the spring plates ||5`| i5 are depressed by the curved rear edges il of the sides of thecap. Since the side curved edges lll are in advance of the pivots |03 of the cap when the @cap isin its open position, the springs l5 pressing upwardly hold the rear edge |48 of the top' of the cap It pressed firmly against the upper surface of thercurved top 95 of the rigid member 94.
The rear side of the cap it is open except as it may be partially closed by the curved top 96 and it is provided with a thumb piece lig extending rearwardly to enable the user of the razor to open and close the razor by pressing rzagainst the said thumb piece. To permit of this movement of the thumb piece the curved top 96 of the rigid member ed is provided with an ample opening |20.
The spring plate il?, is also provided with an intermediate vertically extending stiff spring |2| terminating in a projecting lip E22 which is held firmly pressed against the lower end of a stiff spring lever |23, said end being held firmly pressed against the front side of the back plate ,3 5;by the resiliency of said spring |2l. At the lower end of the lever |23 is a lip or flange |24 making a decided angle with the adjacent portionnof said lever, the lip |22 of said spring |2| bearing against said lever |23 or close to said (angle. rIhe said spring lever |23 extends upwardly and forwardly and its upper end |25 extends into a slot |26 in the top of the cover |06 a little forward of the rear edge I8. A portion of said lever |23 extends approximately parallel `to the inner wall 9?, at the rear thereof, and spaced therefrom to yieldingly press against the rear edge of a lug or projection l extending rearwardly from the blade retainer E85 through an opening |29 through the wall 9i'. When the lider top its is closed and the blade retainer is in its rearmost position, the lever 23 is arranged to bear with yielding pressure against the rearend of the lug or projection i228 by reason of the pressure of the lip E22 of the spring |2| on the lip or flange |20- of the rigid lever i23. But the lid being swung to its raised position, the forward end of the spring lever will be swung upwardly, rocking on the outside of the angle made by the lip 52d, forcing the spring l2! rearwardly until the lip 22 slides down the flange |24 and presses against the main portion of the lever |23, thus holding the rear edge H8 of the top |04 firmly pressed against the curved portion S5 ofthe rigid member Sii.
f ,This yielding pressure of the lever 23 against the lug |26 when the lid is closed is for the purpose of taking up any loose-ness or backlash that may exist in the linkages by means of which the blade retainer |05 is connected to the lid or cover |04 and to thus hold the blade xedly in posi-Vy ,y tion when the razor is being used.
In order to sharpen the blade the useriirslj.,y throws the lid or closure of the razor to its upper open position by pressing the thumb piecel I9.i 5,. In so doing, the blade, firmly held in the bladen,- retainer slides forwardly to cause the cutting.: edge |0 of the blade to project well beyond the flanged end of the bottom 98. If the user wishes to hone the razor, he merely inserts the blade. f10 `T still held in its blade retainer, into the slot 5| l' in the supporting bar 50, or if he wishes to strop4 the razor, he will unlock the reversing lever 5'| y and rotate it through an angle of n to bring the stropping rollers 20 and 2| into the lowerwl position and will insert the blade into the slotu 5d or the blade supporting bar 53.. In so doingll he will also press the handle 03 of the razorw against the flat Yforward edge of the plate 89,.,1 forcing it inwardly until the said edge is flush 20s with the outer surface 4 of the wall 3 thereby closing the contacts 8l and 9| closing the cirf-r y cuit through the motor 46 which im:rnediatelyHM rotates the rollers between which the blade H0' is thus inserted. u 25m The tendency of the rollers is toV draw the' blade inwardly between the rollers, but this isv` prevented by the forward face of the blade re; tainer |05 which, bearing squarely against thel smooth outer surface of the rigid bars 50 or $3,130.?. as the case may be, positively prevents the blade ,L from being pulled inwardly by the rollers beyond a predetermined desired position. The operator is free to slide the razor slightly back and forth laterally over the smooth front surface .4 to`135., change the position of the blade with respectv to the rollers and without disengaging the handle A S3 from the plate 89 of the plunger 83; thus holding the latter depressed as thev handle slid from side to side over it. 40

by merely turning the knurled head 13 of the adjusting screw 1| to position the bars 50 andf53 45 nearer or closer to the line of contact betweenA the rollers. The adjustment of this screw 'Il changing the angle slightly between the adjust-ff ing bar or arm 6l and the reversing lever 51 and ,y thus swings the blade supporting framev 41 slight-` ly with respect to the roller carrying frame |3. After having thus dressed the cutting edge of thef. v razor in one or both of the sets '0f blade dressing rollers as may be found necessary,lthe op-ll erator merely withdraws the blade from the guid 55 e bars thereby removing the handle 93 of the raz/or, from the plate 80, whereupon the spring 88 of the switch mechanism throws the plunger 03 and parts carried thereby toward the front ofthe mag chine separating the movable contact 41 from 60 u the stationary contact 9| breaking the electrical. circuit and stopping the motor. There only remains then for the o erator to throw the cap or closure itil to its closed position and the razor is again ready for use. The construction of the razor is such that it may be easily cleaned without removing the` blade from the blade retainer by simply opening the razor and flowing hot water through it,I 70 Nor is there any danger of inadvertently leav; ing the circuit to the motor closed, for the mo-f ment one has finished using it and the handle is removed from its engagement with the edgef the plate 0S, the circuit is automatically broken 75" and stays broken until Ipressed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
a razor Sharpener, the vcombination of a housing, a'frame supporting shaft mounted to rotate therein, a roller carrying frame rigidly the plate 88 is again desecured to said shaft to rotate therewith, two
pairs of blade dressing rollers mounted in said roller carrying frame for rotationA on axes parallel to said shaft, said pairs of rollers being mounted on diametrically opposite sides of said supportingshaft and with their axes in a plane coincident with the axis of said supporting shaft, the rollers of each pair of rollers being provided with intermeshing gears to rotate said rollers in opposite angular directions, yielding means to normally hold a roller of each pair of rollers, respectively in contact with the other roller of that pair of rollers, a lever rigidly connected to the end of said shaft to rotate said shaft and said roller carrying frame through an angle of substantially 180, means to lock said lever to said housing at the limits of its said arcuate movement, a driving shaft also mounted in said housing, a pinion mounted thereon with its teeth in mesh with the teeth of a gear of one of said pairs of rollers when said frame is at one limit of its arcuate movement and with its teeth in mesh with a gear on one roller of the other pair of rollers when Said frame is at the other limit of its arcuate movement, and a pair of blade holders cooperating respectively with each ,pair o f rollers.
2. In a razor Sharpener, the combination of a housing, a frame supporting shaft, a. roller frame rigidly secured to said shaft within said housing, a pair of blade dressing rollers mounted in said roller frame to rotate on axes parallel to the axis of said shaft, a pair of intermeshing gears, one gear for each of said rollers to positively rotate said rollers in oppositeangular directions at the same peripheral speed, a lever rigid with said shaft, means to lock said lever and said roller frame rigidly with respect to said housing, a drive shaft, a pinion on said drive shaft into mesh with which a gear of one of said rollers moves as it is swung around the axis of said frame supporting shaft, and at the limit of said frame in one direction, and a pair of blade supporting bars each respectively cooperating with one of said pairs of rollers.
3. In a razor Sharpener, the combination of a housing, a frame supporting shaft, a roller frame rigidly secured to said shaft within said housing, a pair of blade dressing rollers mounted in said roller frame to rotate on axes parallel to the axis of said shaft, a pair of intermeshing gears, one gear for each of said rollers to positively rotate said rollers in opposite angular di rections at the same peripheral speed, a lever rigid with said shaft, means to lock said lever and said roller frame rigidly with respect to said housing, a drive shaft, a pinion on said drive shaft into mesh with which a gear of one of said rollers moves as it is swung around the axis of said frame supporting shaft and at the limit of the motion of said frame in one direction, a blade supporting frame also mounted on said frame supporting shaft, a blade supporting bar rigidly carried by said frame, a lever rigid with said blade supporting frame, and means between said levers to adjust the angular relation between said roller supporting frame and said blade supwith its teeth in mesh 5 porting frame and to rigidly hold said frames in their adjusted positions.
4. In a device for sharpening a razor blade mounted in a blade holder, the combination of a housing, a pair of blade dressing rollers mounted therein on parallel axes, means to yieldingly hold said rollers normally in contact with each other, gearing between said rollers to drive one from the other in opposite directions, a rigid blade supporting bar in the front of said rollers and provided with a slot through which a blade may be inserted between said rollers, the outer surface of said bar forming a stop surface for engaging said blade holder to limit the distance that the edge of said blade may project inwardly from said bar into engagement with said roller, an electric motor for driving said rollers, a normally open switch in the circuit of said motor and depressed by said blade holder to hold the switch closed so long as said blade is properly held in said slot for sharpening the same.
5. In a device for sharpening a razor blade mounted in a holder having a handle projecting generally below and transverse to the plane oi the razor blade, the combination of a housing, a pair of parallel blade dressing rollers normally held in yielding contact with each other, a blade guiding member in front of said rollers having its front -face parallel to the axes of contact of said rollers and having a slot therethrough for guiding the cutting edge of a razor blade inserted therein into simultaneous engagement with both of said rollers, said casing being provided with a razor handle guiding surface below, parallel to the front face of, and offset forwardly from the plane of the front surface of said blade guiding member, an electric motor for driving said rollers, and a normally open switch in said housing and having a switch closing member projecting outwardly from said razor handle guiding surface and engaged and depressed to close the circuit to said motor when said switch closing member is pressed flush with said razor handle guiding surface when the handle of said holder is pressed flat against said handle guiding surface.
6. In a razor Sharpener, the combination of a housing, a frame supporting shaft mounted there.`
in, a roller carrying frame mounted on said shaft, two pairs of blade dressing rollers mounted in said roller carrying frame for rotation on axes parallel to said shaft, said pairs of rollers being mounted on substantially opposite sides of said shaft, yielding means to normally hold a roller of each pair of rollers respectively in contact with the other roller of that pair of rollers, a pair of intermeshing gears for each pair of rollers respectively, a lever mounted on said shaft and rigid with respect to said roller carrying frame to rotate said frame about the axis of said frame supporting shaft, means to lock said lever at the limits of its arcuate movement, a driving shaft also mounted in said housing, a pinion mounted thereon with the teeth of a gear of one of said pairs of rollers when said frame is at one limit of its arcuate movement, and with its teeth in mesh with a gear of the other pair of rollers when said frame is at the other limit of its arcuate movement, a blade supporting frame mounted on said frame supporting shaft, a lever on said shaft rigid with said blade supporting frame and means connecting said levers to adjust the angular relation between said roller supporting frame and said blade supporting frame and to rigidly hold said frames in their adjusted positions.

In a razor Sharpener, the combination of a housing, a frame supporting shaft, a roller frame mounted on said shaft, a pair of blade dressing rollers in said roller frame to rotate on axes parallel to the axis of said shaft, a pair of intermeshing gears, one for each roller respectively, a lever mounted on said shaft rigid with respect to said roller frame, means to look said lever and roller frame rigidly with respect to said housing, a drive shaft mounted in said housing, a pinion on said drive shaft into mesh with which a gear of one of said rollers moves as itis swung by said frame and to rigidly hold said frames in their n)V adjusted positions.
