w. JANCSEK COMBINATION LOCK Filed Oct. 5, 1934 Mwzmemei@ ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. l0, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to combination locks, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character requiring the correct operation of the combination before the locking element, which may be in the form of a shackle or bolt, can be released and which employs in its construction a series of tumblers or locking discs, one of which controls the operation of the remaining tumblers or discs, rendering it impossible to position said tumblers or discs properly for the release of the shackle or bolt without knowledge of the combination.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinaticn and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a combination lock constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view, partly in section, with one of the side walls of the casing removed.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating one of the locking plates or tumblers.
Figure 5 is a similar view showing a companion locking plate or tumbler to the one shown by Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating a tumbler or locking plate for the control of the tumblers or locking plates shown in Figures 4 and 5.
Figure 7 is a perspective view illustrating a shackle.
Figure 8 is a perspective view illustrating one of the facing plates located in the casing.
Figure 9 is a similar view showing a companion facing plate to the one disclosed in Figure 8.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a lock casing consisting of flanged cover plates 2 and 3 arranged in abutting engagement and secured together. The casing I is provided with a shackle receiving opening 4 to receive one end of ra shackle 5 while the opposite end of the shackle is pivoted to the casing, as shown at 6. The free end of the shackle has formed therein grooves 1 defining shoulders at opposite sides of the shackle to be engaged by locking mediums conned within the casing I when the free end of the shackle is positioned in said casing.
(Cl. 'l0-112) The locking medium consists of tumblers or locking plates 8, 9 and IS. The tumblers 8 and 9 are similarly constructed and each consists of a disc-like portion provided with a centrally arranged opening II and a marginal flange I2 in 5 which is formed a series of notches I3 de flning spaced tooth-like portions I4. Also formed in the flange i2 is a notch I5. The tumbler or locking disc I8 consists of a disc-like portion having a centrally arranged opening I6 and a mar- 10 ginal flange l? and the latter is provided with pairs of notches I8. One pair of said notches extends inwardly from one edge of the marginal ange Il while the other pair extends inwardly from the opposite edge of said marginal flange. 15
The cover plates 2 and 3 are secured together by rivets which secure to the inner faces thereof facing or supporting plates I 9 each provided with bearing openings 2U and 2|. One of the cover plates is provided with openings that align 20 with the bearing openings of one of the supporting plates. The tumbler or' locking plate 9 has a shaft 22 secured in the opening thereof, one end of said shaft fitting in the bearing opening 20 of one of the supporting plates and extending 25 through the opening of the other supporting plate and through the opening in the last referred to cover plate and has secured thereto a iinger piece 23 equipped with a pointer 24 movable over a graduated dial 25 secured to one end 30 of a sleeve 26 journaled on the shaft 22 and extending through one of the supporting plates I9 and has secured thereto the tumbler or locking plate 8. The last referred to cover plate 3 has series of graduations thereon, one series for 35 cooperation with the dial 25 and the other series for cooperation with a nger piece 2'I secured to a shaft 28 journaled in the bearing openings 2| of the supporting plates I9. Secured to the shaft 28 is the tumbler or locking plate t0. The lo tumblers or locking plates 8 and 9 when assembled in the casing I are relatively spaced With the flanges thereof opposing one another and spaced from each other with the disc-like portion of the tumbler or locking plate I0 operat- 45 ing therebetween, as shown in Figure 3. The locking plates or tumblers 9 positioned as described and with the notches I5 arranged opposite to one another and in alignment with the shackle opening 4 will permit the free end of 50 the shackle to be moved into and out of the lock casing I. With the shackle positioned, as shown in Figure 2, and the tumblers or locking plates 8 and 9 rotated to move the notches I 5 out of alignment with one another, the anges I2 there- 55 of will lie inthe grooves 1 and prevent the Withdrawal of the shackle from the lock casing.
In order that the locking plates or tumblers 8 and 9 may be rotated, the locking plate or tumbler I0 must be so positioned that the notches I8 thereof will permit the flanges of the tumblers 8 and 9 to pass therethrough. Otherwise, if the tumbler I0 is positioned so that the notches thereof will not receive the flanges of the turnblers 8 and 9, said tumblers 8 and 9 cannot be rotated.
The iinger piece 21 carries a pointer 30 for movement over one of the series of graduations upon the cover plate 3. Through the aid of the pointers of the nger pieces and dial 25 a person knowing the combination may readily position the tumbler l0 so as to free the tumblers 8 and 9 for rotation and by operating the finger piece 23 and the dial plate to the correct numbers displayed the tumblers 8 and 9 will be positioned to align the notches l5 and thereby free the shackle for pivotal movement so that its non-pivotal end may be moved out of and into the lock casing. The pivotal end of the shackle 5 is enlarged to form a head which will completely close the opening in the casing l when the shackle is placed in locked position to prevent an instrument from being inserted in the lock casing for the purpose of tampering with the tumblers.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A lock comprising a casing, a shackle pivoted to said casing and having a notched free end, a shaft journaled in said casing, a sleeve journaled on said shaft, finger pieces for the shaft and sleeve, disc-like tumblers secured to the sleeve and shaft and spaced from one another to receive therebetween the notched end of the shackle, and marginal flanges on said tumblers and each having a series of notches to form spaced teeth and a deep notch, said tumblers adapted to be positioned to place the tooth-like portions in the notched end of the shackle to lock the latter against pivotal movement and also adapted to be positioned to align the deep notches to free the shackle.
2. A lock comprising a casing, a shackle pivoted to said casing and having a notched free end, a shaft journaled in said casing, a sleeve -journaled on said shaft, finger pieces for the shaft and sleeve, disc-like tumblers secured to the sleeve and shaft and spaced from one another to Vreceive therebetween the notched end of the shackle, marginal flanges on said tumblers and each having a series of notches to form spaced teeth and a deep notch, a shaft journaled to the casing, a nger piece for the secondnamed shaft, a disc-like tumbler secured to the second-named shaft and received between the flanges of the first-named tumblers, and a marginal flange formed on the second-named tumbler and having pairs of notches With one pair extending inwardly from one edge of the marginal flange and the other pair extending inwardly from the opposite edge of the marginal flange, said pairs of notches adapted to be positioned by the turning of the second-named tumbler to permit the flanges of the first-named tumblers to move therethrough.
