Abstract
Disclosed is a self-priming fluid transfer system having an integral siphon line that draws trapped air bubbles out of a main fluid chamber over time and fluid cycles. The self-priming fluid transfer system may include a body structure and a siphon line. The body structure may include a chamber inlet and a chamber outlet. The main fluid chamber may receive and output fluid from the chamber inlet and the chamber outlet, respectively. The siphon line may be positioned at the periphery of the main fluid chamber and may include a priming inlet and a siphon outlet. The priming inlet may be positioned at or near a top wall of the body structure and may receive air bubbles from the main fluid chamber. The siphon outlet may be positioned at the chamber outlet and may output the air bubbles at the chamber outlet. Other examples may be described and claimed.
Description
- A conventional cooling system that is integrated with a motor and uses a vacuum pump to remove air from a cooling fluid may experience priming issues. This multipiece approach has a higher piece count, is more process intensive and has a longer labor time to produce. This approach also introduces more potential leak points from each sealing plate that is utilized.
- Disclosed is a self-priming fluid transfer system having an integral siphon line that draws trapped air bubbles out of a fluid over time and fluid cycles. The self-priming fluid transfer system may include a body structure and a siphon line. The body structure may include a chamber inlet and a chamber outlet that are positioned at a bottom wall of the body structure, and a main fluid chamber that receives and outputs fluid from the chamber inlet and the chamber, respectively. The siphon line may be positioned at the periphery of the main fluid chamber and may include a priming inlet and a siphon outlet. The priming inlet may be positioned at a top wall of the body structure and may receive air bubbles from the main fluid chamber. The siphon outlet may be positioned at the chamber outlet and may output the air bubbles at the chamber outlet.
- The features, functions, and advantages that have been discussed above or will be discussed below can be achieved independently in various embodiments, or may be combined in yet other embodiments, further details of which can be seen with reference to the following description and drawings.

FIG. 10 is an illustration of a flow diagram illustrating an exemplary process for using the exemplary embodiments of the self-priming water jacket shown in the preceding FIGS, in accordance with various embodiments. - The present disclosure is directed to a self-priming fluid transfer system having an integral siphon line that draws trapped air bubbles out over time and fluid cycles.
- Many specific details of certain embodiments are set forth in the following description, and in
FIGS. 1-9 , to provide a thorough understanding of such embodiments. The present disclosure may have additional embodiments or may be practiced without one or more of the details described below. - Referring more particularly to the drawings, embodiments of this disclosure may be described in the context of a
vehicle 100 having a self-primingwater jacket 120, such as that shown inFIG. 1 . Thevehicle 100 can include, but is not limited to, the following components—hydrogen fuel tank 102,power module 104, converter/controller 110, andelectric engine 112, each of which can be implemented with a self-priming water jacket 120A-D, respectively. The self-primingwater jacket 120 is further shown and explained in the succeeding figures. - The
hydrogen fuel tank 102 supplies hydrogen to afuel cell 108 that generates electricity. Theelectric engine 112 can be powered by thebattery 106 and/or thefuel cell 108 via the converter/controller 110. Thebattery 106 can be recharged by the generated electricity from thefuel cell 108. It should be noted that thevehicle 100 is shown as a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, but thevehicle 100 can also be a battery electric vehicle, a hybrid electric vehicle, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or other type of vehicle. -
FIG. 2 is an illustration of a block diagram of the self-primingfluid transfer system 200 having the self-priming water jacket 120B described inFIG. 1 . The self-primingfluid transfer system 200 includes afluid module 202 that includes apump 224, aradiator 222, and areservoir 220. Thepump 224 circulates the fluid throughout the self-primingfluid transfer system 200. Thereservoir 220 contains the fluid that is circulated back from thepump 224. Theradiator 222 intakes the fluid from thereservoir 220 and transfers heat from the fluid to outside air. The fluid exits from theradiator 222 and flows into thepump 224. - The fluid in
line 204 from thepump 224 enters the converter/controller 110 through afluid inlet 206 that outputs the fluid throughline 208 to awater jacket 120B, which includes amain fluid chamber 210 and asiphon line 212 for the fluid and air bubbles to pass through. The fluid and air bubbles exit from thewater jacket 120B throughline 214 via afluid outlet 216, which passes the fluid and air bubbles throughline 218 to thereservoir 220. Thewater jacket 120 can be made of, but is not limited to, cast iron, alloy and structural steel, or aluminum alloys. It should be noted that air bubbles can also enter thesystem 200 and circulate within the fluid. The self-priming water jacket 120 can remove the air bubbles from the water jacket and circulate them to thereservoir 220 or another device that removes the air bubbles from thesystem 200. -
FIG. 3 is an illustration of a bottom, front, and right-side elevational view of an exemplary self-priming water jacket 120, such as that illustrated inFIG. 1 , where a siphon line is manufactured by way of shaped-based molding (e.g., casting or injection molding) in accordance with various embodiments. The self-priming water jacket 120 includes abody structure 302 having achamber inlet 206 and achamber outlet 216 that are positioned at abottom wall 322 of thebody structure 302. In this example, thechamber inlet 206 is illustrated as an inlet and thechamber outlet 216 as an outlet. - The fluid/air bubbles enter through
line 204 into thefluid inlet 206 which is coupled with achamber inlet 306 of thebody structure 302. The fluid/air bubbles enter the inlet opening 306 and into amain fluid chamber 210. Themain fluid chamber 210 receives the fluid/air bubbles from thechamber inlet 306 and circulates the fluid/air bubbles between and aroundfins 310 andpins 312 that are positioned in themain fluid chamber 210. Themain fluid chamber 210 may have a U-shape configuration that is further described in succeeding figures. The fluid/air bubbles exit out of themain fluid chamber 210 at achamber outlet 308, which is coupled with thefluid outlet 216. The fluid/air bubbles exit out thefluid outlet 216 throughline 218. Apriming inlet 316 is positioned at atop wall 324 of thebody structure 302 and receives air bubbles from themain fluid chamber 210 and outputs the air bubbles at a siphon outlet 413 (FIG. 4 ). - The
main fluid chamber 210 has a topleft protrusion 318, abottom protrusion 314, and a topright protrusion 320 that aid in directing the air bubbles into thepriming inlet 316, which is positioned between the topleft protrusion 318 and the topright protrusion 320. The air bubbles can be trapped between the 318, 320 and can be pushed up by theprotrusions bottom protrusion 314, resulting in the air bubbles entering thepriming inlet 316. The flow of fluid and air bubbles in themain fluid chamber 210 and thesiphon line 212 are further described in succeeding figures. Asealing plate 304 covers and seals thebody structure 302. -
FIG. 4 is an illustration of a front view of an exemplary self-priming water jacket 120 illustrated inFIG. 3 , showing amain fluid chamber 210 and asiphon line 212 at abody structure 302 in accordance with various embodiments. In this example, themain fluid chamber 210 has a U-shape configuration that includes aleft section 420 that is coupled to the chamber inlet 306 (FIG. 3 ), aright section 422 that is coupled to the chamber outlet 308 (FIG. 3 ), and abase section 424 that is positioned at thetop wall 324 of thebody structure 302 and connects theleft section 420 to theright section 422. Thesiphon line 212 may have an L-shape configuration that includes abase section 409 that is positioned at thetop wall 324 of thebody structure 302 and aright section 411 that is coupled to the chamber outlet 308 (FIG. 3 ). The fluid/air bubbles enter thefluid inlet 206 and flow into theleft section 420 of the mainfluid chamber 210 in the direction of 406, 408. The fluid/air bubbles travel up thearrows left section 420 into thebase section 424 in the direction of 406, 408 and then througharrows base section 424 in the direction ofarrow 410. The air bubbles travel up theleft section 420 into thebase section 424 due to momentum of the fluid (when thepump 224 is operating) and buoyancy of the air bubbles, which naturally float toward thebase section 424 where thepriming inlet 316 is located. Thebase section 424 is fluidly connected to thepriming inlet 316 at the top wall of thebody structure 302, where the fluid/air bubbles enter and travel towards the 413, 216 in the direction ofoutlets 416, 218. Thearrows protrusion 314 can direct the fluid/air bubbles toward thepriming inlet 316. The fluid (typically not the air bubbles) travels down through theright section 422 of the mainfluid chamber 210 in the direction of 412, 414.arrows - The siphon
line 212 can be narrower (i.e., have a smaller cross-sectional area) than the mainfluid chamber 210. Thepriming inlet 316 allows air bubbles that would normally be trapped at or near thetop wall 324 of thebody structure 302 to be drawn out through an enclosed high velocity straw-like pathway of the siphonline 212. The direct connection of the siphonline 212 to thefluid outlet 216 and the narrow-enclosed pathway of the siphonline 212 can create a higher draw than the mainfluid chamber 210 which flows at a much slower relative velocity due to the difference in cross-sectional areas between both flow paths. Positioning thepriming inlet 316 at or near the top of the mainfluid chamber 210 can allow the air bubbles to naturally collect at thepriming inlet 316 due to buoyancy of the air bubbles and be carried away in theright section 411 of the siphonline 212 having a smaller cross-sectional area (i.e., narrower flow path) than theright section 422 of the mainfluid chamber 210. - The self-priming
water jacket 120 may operate on a high-pressure side and low-pressure side model. The velocity in the siphonline 212 is an attribute of the narrower siphonline 212 allowing fluid to pass through more rapidly down the siphonline 212. The higher velocity pathway may lend to the vacuum function of the siphon. Another factor of the vacuum function of the siphon is due to buoyancy of the air bubbles naturally floating to the top where thepriming inlet 316 is located. The pressure differential between the mainfluid chamber 210 and the narrower siphonline 212 may create a specific draw (lower pressure on the siphon line 212) that allows the siphonline 212 to siphon the air bubbles out of the top of the mainfluid chamber 210. Velocity is the byproduct. The function of “priming and siphoning” may be created by the high-pressure/low-pressure differential between the paths of the mainfluid chamber 210 and the narrower siphonline 212. - In this example, the siphon
line 212 is positioned along the outer peripheral of the mainfluid chamber 210. In another embodiment, the siphonline 212 can be positioned in front or back of the mainfluid chamber 210. In another embodiment, the siphonline 212 can be positioned in front of the mainfluid chamber 210 on the sealing plate 304 (FIG. 3 ), which is further described inFIG. 8 . In another example, the siphonline 212 can be an external line fluidly connected to thebase section 424 and extending to and fluidly connected to a location at or near thefluid outlet 216. -
FIG. 5 is an illustration of a bottom, front, and right-side elevational view of an exemplary self-primingwater jacket 120, such as that illustrated inFIG. 2 , where a siphonline 212 is manufactured by drilling and/or machining, in accordance with various embodiments. Like features are labeled with the same reference numbers, such as the fluid inlet/ 206, 216, chamber inlet/out 306, 308, mainoutlet fluid chamber 210,fins 310 and pins 312, 314, 318, 320, primingprotrusions inlet 316, bottom and 322, 324,top walls body structure 302, and sealingplate 304. - The self-priming
water jacket 120 ofFIG. 5 is configured to further include drilledopenings 506 a, b positioned on the right-side wall 502 and a drilledopening 506 c positioned on thetop wall 324. The drilled openings 506 a-c indicate the location of the siphonline 212, which is further shown and described inFIGS. 6-7 . The drilled openings 506 a-c can be sealed with plugs 508 a-c, respectively. It should be noted that the self-primingwater jacket 120 can be manufactured, individually or in combination, using any shape-based molding, drilling/machining method, and 3D printing, among others. -
FIG. 6 is an illustration of a bottom, front, and right-side elevational view of an exemplary self-primingwater jacket 120, such as that illustrated inFIG. 5 , where abody structure 302 of the self-primingwater jacket 120 is partially cut-off to show the siphon line, in accordance with various embodiments. The siphonline 212 inFIG. 6 has an L-shape configuration that includes abase section 409 that is positioned at thetop wall 324 of thebody structure 302 and aright section 411 that is coupled to the chamber outlet 308 (FIG. 3 ). - The
right section 411 of the siphonline 212 is created by drilling a right-bottom pathway from the drilledopening 506 b into thechamber outlet 308 and by drilling a right-side pathway from the drilledopening 506 c to the right-bottom pathway. Thepriming inlet 316 is created by drilling from the drilledopening 506 d through the top pathway and into the mainfluid chamber 210. Thebase section 409 of the siphonline 212 is created by drilling a top pathway from the drilled opening 506 a to thepriming inlet 316. The drilled pathways of theright section 411 andbase section 409 are further shown inFIG. 7 . -
FIG. 7 is an illustration of a front view of an exemplary self-primingwater jacket 120 illustrated inFIG. 6 , in accordance with various embodiments. The fluid/air bubbles enter thefluid inlet 206 flowing into theleft section 420 of the mainfluid chamber 210 in the direction ofarrow 406. The fluid/air bubbles travel up theleft sections 420 and into thebase section 424 in the direction ofarrow 410. Thebase section 424 is coupled to thepriming inlet 316 at the top wall of thebody structure 302, where the fluid/air bubbles enter in the direction ofarrow 412 and travel towards the 413, 216. Theoutlets protrusion 314 can push the fluid/air bubbles into thepriming inlet 316. The fluid (typically not the air bubbles) travels down through theright section 422 of the mainfluid chamber 210 atline 414. - The siphon
line 212 can be narrower than the mainfluid chamber 210. Thepriming inlet 316 allows the air bubbles that would normally be trapped at thetop wall 324 of thebody structure 302 to be drawn out through an enclosed high velocity straw-like pathway of the siphonline 212. The direct connection of the siphonline 212 to thefluid outlet 216 and the narrow-enclosed pathway of the siphonline 212 can create a higher draw than the mainfluid chamber 210 which flows at a much slower relative rate due to difference in cross-sectional area between both flow paths. Positioning the inlet at the top of the mainfluid chamber 210 can allow the air bubbles to naturally be collected into thepriming inlet 316 and be carried away in theright section 411 of the siphonline 212 having a narrower flow loop thanleft section 422 of the mainfluid chamber 210. - In this example, the siphon
line 212 is positioned along the outer peripheral of the mainfluid chamber 210. In another embodiment, the siphonline 212 can be positioned in front or back of the mainfluid chamber 210. In another embodiment, the siphonline 212 can be positioned in front of the mainfluid chamber 210 on the sealing plate 304 (FIG. 3 ), which is further described inFIG. 8 . -
FIG. 8 is an illustration of a front view of an exemplary self-primingwater jacket 120 illustrated inFIG. 2 , showing a siphonline 212 created at the sealingplate 304 of the self-primingwater jacket 120 in accordance with various embodiments. The siphonline 212 inFIG. 8 has an L-shape configuration that includes abase section 409 that is positioned at thetop wall 324 of the sealingplate 304 and aright section 411 that is coupled to the chamber outlet 308 (FIG. 3 ). Theright section 411 of the siphonline 212 is created by drilling a front-right-bottom pathway from the drilledopening 506 b into thechamber outlet 308 and by drilling a right-side pathway from the drilledopening 506 c to the front-right-bottom pathway. - The
priming inlet 316 is created by drilling a front-center-top pathway from the drilledopening 506 d. Thebase section 409 of the siphonline 212 is created by drilling a top pathway from the drilled opening 506 a to the front-center-top pathway. It should be noted that the siphonline 212 ofFIG. 8 can also be implemented at the rear side of thebody structure 302 as another embodiment of the self-primingwater jacket 120. -
FIG. 9 is an illustration of a front view of an exemplary self-priming water jacket, such as that illustrated inFIG. 2 , showing a mainfluid chamber 910 and a siphonline 912 at abody structure 902 of the self-priming water jacket in accordance with various embodiments. In this example, the mainfluid chamber 910 has aleft section 920 that is fluidly connected to the inlet 206 (FIG. 3 ), atop section 924 that is positioned at the top wall of themain chamber 910, aright section 922 that is fluidly connected to apriming inlet 926 of a siphonline 912, and abottom section 936 that is positioned at the bottom wall of thebody structure 902. The siphonline 912 includes aright section 911 that is positioned at theright section 922 of the mainfluid chamber 910 and abottom section 915 that is positioned at thebottom section 936 of the mainfluid chamber 910 and fluidly connected to theoutlet 216. - The fluid/air bubbles enter the
fluid inlet 206 flowing into theleft section 920 of the mainfluid chamber 910 in the direction ofarrow 906. The fluid/air bubbles travel up theleft section 920, across thetop section 924 in the direction ofarrow 907, down theright section 922 in the direction ofarrow 908, across thebottom section 936 in the direction ofarrow 909, out thebottom section 936 in the direction ofarrow 914 and out theoutlet 216. The top right corner of thetop section 924/right section 922 is coupled to thepriming inlet 926, where the fluid/air bubbles enter and travel toward a siphonoutlet 913 andoutlet 216. Theprotrusion 928 can trap the fluid/air bubbles between the priminginlet 926 and theprotrusion 928, and the fluid/air bubbles can be drawn into thepriming inlet 926 atline 932 and out the siphonoutlet 913 in the direct ofarrow 916. The fluid (typically not the air bubbles) travels down through theright section 922 of the mainfluid chamber 910 in the direction ofarrow 908. - The siphon
line 912 can be narrower and have a smaller cross-sectional area than the mainfluid chamber 910. Thepriming inlet 926 allows the air bubbles that would normally be trapped at thetop section 924 of the mainfluid chamber 910 to be drawn out in the direction ofarrow 932 through an enclosed high velocity straw-like pathway of the siphonline 912. The direct connection of the siphonline 912 to thefluid outlet 216 and the narrow-enclosed pathway of the siphonline 912 can create a higher draw than the mainfluid chamber 910, which flows at a much slower relative velocity due to difference in cross-sectional area between both flow paths. Positioning thepriming inlet 926 at the top right corner of the mainfluid chamber 910 can allow the air bubbles to naturally be collected into thepriming inlet 926 and be carried away in theright section 911 of the siphonline 912 having a narrower flow loop thanright section 922 of the mainfluid chamber 910. - In this example, the siphon
line 912 is positioned along the outer peripheral of the mainfluid chamber 910. In another embodiment, the siphonline 912 can be positioned in front or back of the mainfluid chamber 910. In another embodiment, the siphonline 912 can be positioned in front of the mainfluid chamber 910 on the sealing plate 304 (FIG. 3 ). -
FIG. 10 is an illustration of a flow diagram illustrating anexemplary process 1000 for using the exemplary embodiments of the self-primingwater jacket 120 shown in the preceding FIGS. Atblock 1005, fluid is passed into a chamber inlet 306 (FIG. 3 ) of a main fluid chamber 210 (FIG. 2 ) that is positioned at a bottom wall 322 (FIG. 3 ) of a body structure 302 (FIG. 3 ). Atblock 1010, the fluid is passed through the mainfluid chamber 210 and out a chamber outlet 308 (FIG. 3 ) that is positioned at the bottom wall of 322 thebody structure 302. Atblock 1015, air bubbles are passed from the mainfluid chamber 210 into apriming inlet 316 that is positioned at atop wall 324 of thebody structure 302. Atblock 1020, the air bubbles are passed from thepriming inlet 316 out of the siphonoutlet 413. - While embodiments have been illustrated and described above, many changes can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the disclosure. Accordingly, the scopes of the embodiments are not limited by the disclosure. Instead, the embodiments of the disclosure should be determined entirely by reference to the claims that follow.
Claims (20)
1. A self-priming fluid transfer system, comprising:
a body structure having:
a chamber inlet and a chamber outlet that are positioned at a bottom wall of the body structure, and
a main fluid chamber that receives and outputs fluid from the chamber inlet and the chamber outlet, respectively; and
a siphon line that is positioned at a periphery of the main fluid chamber and includes:
a priming inlet that is positioned at a top wall of the body structure and receives air bubbles from the main fluid chamber, and
a siphon outlet that is positioned at the chamber outlet and outputs the air bubbles from the priming inlet at the chamber outlet.
2. The self-priming fluid transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the main fluid chamber includes a base section, a left section, and a right section, of which the base section is coupled to the priming inlet at the top wall of the body structure, wherein the left section and the right section are coupled to the chamber inlet and the chamber outlet.
3. The self-priming fluid transfer system of claim 2 , wherein the main fluid chamber has a protrusion at a bottom portion of the base section that aids in inputting the air bubbles in the priming inlet that is positioned at a top portion of the base section of the main fluid chamber.
4. The self-priming fluid transfer system of claim 2 , wherein the main fluid chamber has a protrusion at a top portion of the base section that aids in inputting the air bubbles in the priming inlet that is positioned at the top portion of the base section of the main fluid chamber.
5. The self-priming fluid transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the siphon line and the priming inlet are positioned at the body structure.
6. The self-priming fluid transfer system of claim 5 , wherein the siphon line and the priming inlet are manufactured by way of shape-based molding.
7. The self-priming fluid transfer system of claim 5 , wherein the siphon line and the priming inlet are manufactured by way of drilling/machining the body structure.
8. The self-priming fluid transfer system of claim 1 , further comprising a sealing plate that covers and seals the body structure.
9. The self-priming fluid transfer system of claim 8 , wherein the siphon line and the priming inlet are positioned at the sealing plate.
10. The self-priming fluid transfer system of claim 1 , further comprises:
a reservoir that contains the fluid;
a radiator that transfers heat from the fluid to outside air; and
a pump that circulates the fluid into and out of the main fluid chamber and the siphon line.
11. A self-priming water jacket, comprising:
a body structure having:
a chamber inlet and a chamber outlet that are positioned at or near a bottom wall of the body structure, and
a main fluid chamber that receives and outputs fluid from the chamber inlet and the chamber outlet, respectively, wherein the main fluid chamber includes fins and pins that the fluid flows therebetween and around; and
a siphon line that is positioned at a periphery of the main fluid chamber and includes:
a priming inlet that is positioned at or near a top wall of the body structure and receives air bubbles from the main fluid chamber, and
a siphon outlet that is positioned at the chamber outlet and outputs the air bubbles at the chamber outlet.
12. The self-priming water jacket of claim 11 , wherein the main fluid chamber includes a base section, a left section and a right section, of which the base section is fluidly connected to the priming inlet at the top wall of the body structure, wherein the left section and the right section are fluidly connected to the chamber inlet and the chamber outlet.
13. The self-priming water jacket of claim 12 , wherein the main fluid chamber has a bottom protrusion that is positioned at a bottom portion of the base section and a top protrusion that is positioned at a top portion of the base section, both of which aid in directing the air bubbles toward the priming inlet that is positioned at the top portion of the base section of the main fluid chamber.
14. The self-priming water jacket of claim 11 , wherein the siphon line and the priming inlet are positioned at the body structure.
15. The self-priming water jacket of claim 13 , wherein the siphon line and the priming inlet are manufactured by way of shape-based molding.
16. The self-priming water jacket of claim 13 , wherein the siphon line and the priming inlet are manufactured by way of drilling/machining the body structure.
17. The self-priming water jacket of claim 11 , further comprising a sealing plate that covers and seals the body structure.
18. The self-priming water jacket of claim 17 , wherein the siphon line and the priming inlet are positioned at the sealing plate.
19. The self-priming water jacket of claim 11 , wherein the priming inlet is positioned at a top corner of the body structure.
20. A method of using a self-priming water jacket, comprising the steps of:
passing fluid into a chamber inlet of a main fluid chamber that is positioned at a bottom wall of a body structure;
passing the fluid through the main fluid chamber and out a chamber outlet that is positioned at the bottom wall of the body structure;
passing air bubbles from the main fluid chamber into a priming inlet that is positioned at a top wall of the body structure; and
passing the air bubbles from the priming inlet and out a siphon outlet that is positioned at the chamber outlet.
