The invention relates to a keyless combination lock and more especially to a door knob spindle lock.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character wherein through the use of push plungers the spindle for a door knob which controls the lock or latch for the door can be locked or unlocked and these plungers are arranged in a novel manner so that the same can be manually operated and are set to a determined combination and thus rendering it practically impossible for an intruder to enter a room or enclosure unless they are familiar with the combination and the working of the lock and. at the same time eliminating the necessity for the use of a key or keys for locking and unlocking purposes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character wherein on tampering with the lock by one unfamiliar with a combination thereof a signal will be given thus disclosing the unauthorized manipulation of such lock or an attempt at burglary, thereby assuring safety to the occupant of the room or enclosure from unauthorized entry.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its operation, possessing but few parts so as to minimize irregularity in the working of the lock, it assuring safety against illegitimate entry to an enclosure, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
, With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the lock structure in accordance with the invention and showing its application to a door knob spindle.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 designates generally a portion of the turning spindle of a door lock or latch and having fitted thereto at each end a door knob, a portion of the same being indicated at 6 and is of conventional kind. It is, of course, understood that a knob is located 5 at the outer side of the door and one at the inner side thereof, as is usual, and by the turning of such knob the latch or lock mechanism may be operated for the releasing of the door, a portion of the latter being indicated at 1. Associated 10 with this spindle 5 is the keyless combination lock embodying the present invention and hereinafter fully described.
The lock comprises a plate like sector 8 formed with a hub 9 which fits the spindle 5 and is made 15 fast thereto by a set screw ID, the hub being located next to the knob 6 between it and the door 1, and the outer circular edge of this sector is provided with the arcuate formed inwardly directed flange ll having at spaced intervals holes 20 or apertures l 2 for a purpose presently described.
Enclosing the sector 8 and carried by the door 1 is a fan like housing or casing I 3 having the attaching ears M at the required points for receiving fasteners to enable the securing or the 25 fixing of such housing or casing l3 to the door, the front l5 of the latter being disposed over the sector 8 and such front is of segmental contour. Projected inwardly from the front l5 of the housing or casing l3 above the flange l I on the sector 30 8 are upper and lower flanges I6 and Il respectively, these being uniformly spaced and are arcuately arranged concentrically one with respect to the other.
Disposed radially and slidably fitted in the top 30 of the housing or casing i3 and in the upper flange I 6 are series of push plungers l3 and I9 respectively, these having at their outer ends heads 20 and surrounding such plungers are coiled tensioning springs 2! which function to 40 urge the said plungers in an outward direction.
The series of plungers l9 at their inner ends are provided with bridging yokes 22 spanning the flanges II and I! of the sector 8 and housing 01 casing 13 respectively. These yokes 22 carry locking tumblers or pins 23 which play through the openings or holes 12 in the flange II of the sector 8 to engage selective holes or openings 24 provided in the flange ll of the housing or cas- 5O ing [3 so as to lock the said sector 8 against swinging movement relative to the housing or casing l3, the springs 2| being adapted to engage the tumblers or pins 23 with the said holes or openings 24, while the series of plungers i8, 55
of the knob 6 and thus releasing the door I or unlocking the same. By depressing any of the plungers I8, the door 1 will be more firmly locked because these plungers acting as tumblers will engage in the holes or openings 12' in the sector 8 thus preventing the turning thereof even should the plungers l9 have been pressed for the release of the tumblers or pins 23' thereof, it being required that to successfully operate the look a person must have knowledge of the combination and of the plungers so that the series of plungers H! be moved freeing the tumblers or pins 23 thereof from the holes 24 in the lower flange H of the housing or casing I3 of the lock and also the pins 23 moved from the holes l2 in the flange II.
It should be apparent that these series of plungers l8 and I9 can be rearranged at the option of the user of the lock to" change the set combination of the lock and therange of combinations being extensive.
As has been indicated, the lock normally has the tumblers or pins 23 of the series of plungers l9 engaged With the holes 24 in the flange ll of the housing or casing l3 and thus the door I having this look applied thereto will be latched or locked, it being preferable to have the heads 28 of the plungers l8 and I9 identified by suitable characters for effecting the convenient working of the set combination of the look by a person having knowledge of such combination, the plungers l9 being the release plungers of the combination of the series of plungers l8 and 19, while the series of plungers l8 are the barrier plungers in the set combination.
One of the plungers l8 carries aswitch closing arm 25 operative upon a normally open electric switch 25 included in an. electric circuit for an alarm or signal, not shown, which is either of the audible or visible kind so that malicious tampering with the lock will sound an alarm to indicate an unauthorized attempt for entrance to an enclosure or room or the tampering with the look by an unscrupulous person should burglary be attempted.
What is claimed is:
1. A keyless combination lock comprising a pair of plate members, one movable relative to' the other, segmental shaped flanges built upon said plate members and provided with registering pin receiving openings, push pins slidably 10 fitted in the flanges on one plate member and engageable with the flange on the other plate member from opposite sides thereof, and means active upon the push pins to hold certain of the same in locked engagement with the flange 011.15 the movable plate member and the other pins out of locked engagement therewith.
2. A keyless combination lock comprising a pair of plate members, one movable relative to the other, segmental shaped flanges built upon said plate members and provided with registering pin receiving openings, push pins slidably fitted in the flange on one plate member and engageablewith the flange on the other plate member from opposite sides thereof, means active upon the push pins to hold certain of the same in locked engagement with the flange on the movable plate member and the other pins out of locked engagement therewith and a door latch spindle mount on the plate member movable with relation to the other plate member and adapted for fixed engagement with said spindle.
3. A keyless combination lock comprising a pair of plate members, one movable relative to the other, segmental shaped flanges built upon said plate members and provided with registering pin receiving openings, push pins slidably fitted in the flange on one plate member and engageable with the flange o-n'the other plate member from opposite sides thereof, means active 0 upon the push pins to hold certain of the same in locked engagement with the flange on the movable plate member and the other pins outof locked engagement therewith, a door latch spindle mount on the plate member movable with relation' to the other plate member and adapted for fixed engagement with said spindle'and fastener lugs for securing the other plate member to a door. a
