UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Sm CLAMP Charles A. Hollander, Evansville, Ind., assigner to Servei, Inc., New York, N. Y., a connotations! Delawar Application my s, 19:4, sensi No. 7:4,544
1 claim. (ci. 24a-25o) This invention relates to shelf clamps or retainers intended to be used in conjunction with supports for shelves or trays in refrigerators or other cabinets for maintaining the shelves in 5' position. Y The invention is intended to permit shipping of the shelves in place in the cabinet and eliminate the necessity of packing the shelves in a separate carton for shipment. Y l It is an object of the invention to provide a simple and inexpensive shelfv securing clip for holding the shelves in place against vibration and during shipment, thus reducing the expense of additional crating and unpacking of the shelves.
l Other objects and advantages will be apparent.
from the following description taken in connection withthe accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a horizontal section through a cabinet showing a top plan view of a shelf held in position f by spring clips in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2, agsection on the line of Fig. l: and.'
Hg.3,asection onthe line 3 3 ofFig. 1. Referring to the drawing, a refrigerator cabi- '25 net Il is pmvided-With a Porcelained liner Il,
and supports I 2 carried by the liner for supporting a shelfyil. 'Ihe shell' supports I2 are pegs or hooks of conventional construction each having an enlarged head, a threaded shank adjacent the head for reception of a nut/thereon and with both Va smooth shelf engaging 'portion and an uptumed extremity disposed outwardly' of the' threaded portion of the shank. Each support Il projects through an aperture in the liner and is $5 fastened` in position by means of the nut on the threadedshankengaging andbearingagainsta convex spring washer which preferably rests upon agasketsothat the linerwlll notbe marred'by thespring washer. The supports I2 are of sumcient lengthto permit the shelf to have a limited amount of lateral play or movement in order to compensate for. inequalities in the liner caused .byheatdunngthebakingproo'esa Theshelf I3 has a -tendency tofvibrate Vor rattle due to this lateral play it the cabinet is jarred as when not supDOred solidly or for any other reason. Spring l clips I4 serve to preventrattling of` the shelf or dislodgment during shipment. I
The clips Il are each formed of sprlng'metal, 5 such as wire or the like. Each clip has an inter-A mediate -portion I 5 for disposal beneath a support I2 and upwardly extending arms I6 and il forming a 'U-shaped portion. The arms Ii andA Il are bent substantially horizontally to overlie 10 the rim of the shelf. The arm Ii is curved down-- wardly to form a hook to nt over-the rim or` boundingframeoitheshelf andthearm Ilis extended to underlie a ilat ribbon which con- 4 stitutes a crow-bar of the shelf. The free ex- 15 tremity of the arm Il is provided with an up-V turned portion il for-preventing disengagement ofthe arm Il from the cross-bar which it under-v lies.
AAs shown, the shelf supports lI2 are securedzo two on the side walls and two on the rear walls of the cabinet. However, if desired they may be secured on the side walls or'in any other manner preferred. Likewise the clips may be removed after shipment or left in place as desired. z5-
It will be apparent to those skilledin the art -that various other changes may be made in the construction and arrangement without departing from the spirit of'the invention, and therefore the invention is not limited to that which iside- 'scribed in the speciiication and shown in the drawing, but only as indicated in the following claim.
