DEVICE FOR DISPENSING LUBRICANTS AND THE LIKE Filed June 20, 1955 fdiZ/z/Kfiamas Patented Nov. 12, 1935 UNITED STATE DEVICE FOR DISPENSING LUBRICANTS AND THE LIKE Application June 20, 1935, Serial No. 27,613
In Australia April 26, 1934 5 Claims.
' commonly known as grease guns, of the kind wherein a plunger fed by a piston is adapted to eject lubricant under pressure into bearings and the like, and it has for its principal object to provide a device in which the piston is positively operated and cannot stick or fail to furnish the plunger with a constant supply of lubricant. The invention also has for its object to provide a device of simple, inexpensive, construction possessing but few parts, in which the plunger and piston are axially arranged longitudinally in a lubricant containing barrel and are both operated independently and externally thereof to force the lubricant therefrom as required.
The objects, advantages and features of novelty of the invention, however, will be more fully apparent and understood from the following description, claims and accompanying drawing.
Referring to the drawing:-- 7
Figure l is a view of a lubricating device or grease gun according to the invention. The piston is shown in broken lines at its innermost position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of a barrel and a front closing cap and nipple thereoftheparts being separatedfor convenience of illustration.
Figure 3. is a view of a plunger and piston and the parts for operating the latter. Figure 1 in effect shows in inverse plan the parts seen in Figure 3. The handle of the plunger is upturned in Figure 1 and depending in Figure 3.
Figure 4 is a sectional end elevation looking at a rear closing cap of the barrel.
Figure 5 is an elevation looking at the front end of the barrel with the front closing cap removed.
Figure 6 is a sectional detail View showing the piston and associated parts by which it is operated the parts being separated for convenience of illustration.
Figure 7 is a view of a modified lubricatingdevice or grease gun in which the piston is operated by an external spring.
A lubricating device according to the invention includes a barrel 2 externally threaded at each end as at 3. Threaded to the forward end of the barrel is an internally threaded front cap having a nozzle 5. Formed in the nozzle 5 is a chamber, indicated at 6, with which communicates a discharge passageway indicated at I. The outer end of the nozzle 5 is externally threaded and provided with an internally threaded nipple comprising a cylindrical casing 3 having therein a a series of adjusting holes therein indicated at This invention relates to lubricating devices,
washer or abutment filling 9 provided with a discharge orifice or passageway indicated at it.
Threaded to the rear end of the barrel 2 is an internally threaded rear cap I 8 having therein a central free hole through which passes a longi- 5 tudinal plunger comprising a rod 52 having an outbent rear end it provided with a handle l4. Carried by plunger rod 42 at or near the front end thereof is a limit stop !5 to prevent its complete withdrawal from the barrel 2. I 1
Formed through the rear cap ii, at each side of the plunger rod 62, is a free hole through which passes a longitudinal piston rod IS. The rear ends of the rods it are united by a cross handle H. The front end of each rod I6 is threaded. Secured to the front ends of the rods It by nuts I8 is a piston comprising a plate or disc 19 having an externally threaded neck 20 and a cup leather 2| retained to the plate by a nut 22 threaded upon the neck 20 and by nuts I 8 threaded upon the rods l6. The plate or disc 59 is provided with free holes to pass the threaded ends of the rods l6 and the cup leather is provided with holes to pass the said rod ends and the neck 20 2 as will be clear from Figure 6. 7
If desired the front ends of the rods H3 may be united by a separate plate or disc and the piston may be saparate from the said rods. The piston may then comprise the disc or plate l9 and cup leather 2! retained by the nut 22. The piston whether attached to the rods l6 or separate therefrom obviously will be positively operated and cannot stick in the barrel 2.
In use the barrel 2 is charged with lubricant by removing the front cap 4 and withdrawing the piston 20, i9 and plunger rod l2 to the rear end of the barrel. The handle I I may be grasped in one hand and the handle it in the other. The nipple 8, 9 is applied to the bearing or surface to be lubricated. By reciprocating the plunger rod i2 with short quick strokes lubricant is forced from the chamber 6 under pressure whilst a steady inward pressure on the piston by means of the rods l6 and handle ll ensures a proper supply of lubricant to the chamber 8 on each return stroke of the plunger rod. Any vacuum, partial vacuum or suction produced in the barrel and chamber 6 by the operation of the reciprocatory parts assists the piston in its forward movement but any air leakage past the barrel and chamber 6 does not affect the efficiency of the device.
In the modification seen in Figure 7' the barrel 2 is provided with a lug 23 or the like having 24. The handle I1 is provided with a lug 28 and a helical spring is located between the lugs. Obviously the spring exerts a constant pull or pressure on the piston l9, 2| with or without the addition of manual pressure to the handle IT. The tension of the spring may be maintained by adjusting it in the holes 24 of the lug 23. Although only one spring has been shown a plurality may be employed, if desired, such as two oppositely arranged springs one at each side of the barrel.
I claim: I
1. Improvements in devices for dispensing lubricant and the like, consisting in a barrel having a discharge nozzle, a plunger rod reciprocating longitudinally of the barrel, a longitudinally sliding piston moving axially along the barrel and rod, piston rods associated with the piston in the barrel at their inner ends and projecting from the said barrel at their outer ends, a handle connected to the said outer ends of the piston rods, and an adjustable spring attached at one end to the barrel and at the other end to the handle.
2. Improvements in devices for dispensing lubricant and the like, consisting of a barrel having a removable front closing cap, a nozzle having a chamber therein carried by the said cap, a rear closing cap attached to the barrel, a longitudinal plunger rod passing through the rear cap and aligned with the chamber of the front cap, a handle carried by the outer end of the plunger rod, a sliding piston arranged within the barrel axially of the plunger rod, a pair of piston rods associated with the piston at their inner ends and projecting through the rear cap at their outer ends, and a handle attached to the outer ends of the said piston rods.
3. Improvements in devices for dispensinglubricant and the like, consisting of a barrel havand projecting through the rear cap at their outer ends, a handle attached to the outer ends of the I said piston rods, a lug having a series of adjusting holes therein carried by the barrel, a ing carried by the handle of the piston rods, and a 5 helical spring attached to and located between the said lugs.

5. Improvements in devices for dispensing lubricant and the like, consisting of a barrel having a removable front closing cap, a nozzle havin a chamber therein carried by the said cap, a nipple removably carried by the nozzle, 2. rear closing cap attached to the barrel, a longitudinal plunger rod passing through the rear cap and aligned with the chamber of the front cap, an angularly disposed handle carried by the outer end of the plunger rod, a sliding piston arranged within the barrel axially oi the plunger rod and comprising a disc or plate having a threaded neck and a cup leather retained to the plate and accommodating the neck, a pair of longitudinal piston rods associated with the piston at their 4? inner ends and projecting through the rear cap at their outer ends, a cross handle attached to the outer ends of the said piston rods, a lug having a series of adjusting holes therein carried by the barrel, 2. lug carried by the handle of the piston 3' rods, and a helical spring attached to and located between the said lugs.
