Abstract

A body for cradling a gun. The body having a first channel and a second channel thereinto, the first channel having a longitudinal direction and being into one side of the body, the second channel having a longitudinal direction and being into the same side of the body as the first channel, the longitudinal direction of the second channel being across the longitudinal direction of the first channel.

Description

    BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • The instant invention relates to devices for cradling a gun. A number of devices have been developed for resting a gun for target or hunting purposes. For example, Outers sells the VARMENTER brand rest and Caldwell sells the LEAD SLED brand rest. Other devices have been developed for holding a gun for cleaning or gunsmithing. For example, MTM Case Guard sells the GUN MAINTENANCE CENTER brand device. Despite the many advances in this art there remains a need for a more versatile device that serves as a shooting rest, a cradle for gun cleaning and for gunsmithing.
    • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The instant invention is the discovery of a more versatile device that serves as a rest for target shooting and hunting as well as a cradle for gun cleaning and gunsmithing. More specifically, the instant invention is a body having a first channel and a second channel thereinto, the first channel having a longitudinal direction and being into one side of the body, the second channel having a longitudinal direction and being into the same side of the body as the first channel, the longitudinal direction of the second channel being across the longitudinal direction of the first channel.
    • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a highly preferred embodiment of the instant invention;
  • FIG. 2 is a view of one end of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 showing an insert partly slid therefrom to expose passageways thereunto for storage of a cleaning rod, rod tips and a bottle of gun oil;
  • FIG. 3 is a view of the other end of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 showing another insert partly slid therefrom to expose passageway thereunto for storage of gun cleaning mops and brushes;
  • FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 being used as a shooting rest; and
  • FIG. 5 is a view of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 being used to clean a gun.
    •  DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • Referring now to FIG. 1, therein is shown a perspective view of a highly preferred embodiment of the instant invention comprising a body 10 having a first channel 11 and a second channel 12 thereunto, first channel 11 having a longitudinal direction 11 a and being into one side of body 10. Second channel 12 having a longitudinal direction 12 a and being into the same side of the body 10 as first channel 11. The longitudinal direction 12 a of the second channel 12 being across longitudinal direction 11 a of first channel 11. Passageways 20 into body 10 are provided for holding fired or unfired cartridges. Depressions 24 into body 10 are provided for holding, for example, gun parts or gun cleaning accessories. Passageway 12 b is provided for holding the bolt of a bolt action rifle. Sliding inserts 13 and 18 in body 10 will be discussed below.
  • Referring now to FIG. 2, therein is shown a view of one end of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 with insert 13 partly slid from body 10 to expose passageways in body 10 for storage of cleaning rod 16, rod tips 15 and a bottle of gun oil 14.
  • Referring now to FIG. 3, therein is shown a view of the other end of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 with insert 18 partly slid from body 10 to expose passageways thereunto for storage of gun cleaning mops 19 b and gun cleaning brushes 19.
  • Referring now to FIG. 4, therein is shown a perspective view of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 being used as a shooting rest by cradling rifle 23 in passageway 11 of body 10. Cartridges 22 are withdrawn from passageways 20, fired from rifle 23, and then the fired cartridge cases can be stored in an orderly manner in passageways 20 on the other side of passageway 12.
  • Referring now to FIG. 5, therein is shown a view of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 being used to clean a gun 23. Gun 23 is cradled in passageway 12 of body 10. Depression 24 is shown containing rod tip 15, brush 19 a and mop 19 b. Bolt 23 a of gun 23 is inserted into passageway 12 b in body 10 so that gun cleaning rod 16 can be used to clean gun 23.
  • The body of the instant invention can be made of any suitable material and by any suitable means such as, for example and without limitation thereto, by milling the channels from a block of foamed polyethylene. The highly preferred embodiment shown in FIG. 1 is made of flexible urethane foam having a nominal density of five pounds per cubic foot. Flexible urethane foam is light weight, tough and soft to the touch. The embodiment shown in FIG. 1 was made by casting a two part foaming urethane mixture into a mold. Various inserts were provided on the ends of the mold to form passageways into the body of the instant invention. The first and second channel, the adjacent passageways and depressions were formed by corresponding shapes on the bottom of the mold. The sides and bottom of the mold were withdrawn from the body after the urethane foam had been cast into the mold and the urethane had cured. Two part urethane for forming urethane foam forms is available, for example, from Smooth-On products, Macungie, Pa. as FLEXFOAM-IT V brand two part urethane.
  • Although either channel of the instant invention can be used as a rest when shooting a rifle, a pistol or a shotgun, channel 11 is of the preferred embodiment as shown in FIG. 4 is most preferred for cradling the gun. Although either channel of the instant invention can be used as a rest when cleaning a rifle, a pistol or a shotgun, channel 12 is of the preferred embodiment as shown in FIG. 5 is most preferred for cradling the gun. Although either channel of the instant invention can be used as a rest when gun-smithing a rifle, a pistol or a shotgun (such as installing scope mounts on a rifle), channel 12 is of the preferred embodiment as shown in FIG. 5 is most preferred for cradling the gun. The longitudinal direction of the first channel of the instant invention is most preferably perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the second channel thereof. The instant invention is a unique product that eliminates having to take multiple products to the shooting range, hunting, target shooting, camping, vacation, etc. The instant invention allows the shooter to shoot, clean and work on a gun while utilizing one device. The preferred embodiment of instant invention is light weight, soft in touch, easily transported in a trunk, back seat, truck bed, duffle bag or saddle bag and all the while providing space for gun cleaning accessories.
    • Conclusion
  • While the instant invention has been described above according to its preferred embodiments, it can be modified within the spirit and scope of this disclosure. This application is therefore intended to cover any variations, uses, or adaptations of the instant invention using the general principles disclosed herein. Further, the instant application is intended to cover such departures from the present disclosure as come within the known or customary practice in the art to which this invention pertains.

Claims (9)

What is claimed is:
1. A gun cradle comprising a body having a first channel and a second channel thereinto, the first channel having a longitudinal direction and being into one side of the body, the second channel having a longitudinal direction and being into the same side of the body as the first channel, the longitudinal direction of the second channel being across the longitudinal direction of the first channel.
2. The gun cradle of claim 1, further comprising one or more passageways and one or more depressions into one or more sides of the body.
3. The gun cradle of claim 1, wherein the body comprises a foamed polymer.
4. The gun cradle of claim 1, molded from castable flexible urethane foam.
5. The gun cradle of claim 4, wherein the density of the urethane foam has a density of about five pounds per cubic foot.
6. The gun cradle of claim 2, molded from castable flexible urethane foam.
7. The gun cradle of claim 6, wherein the density of the urethane foam has a density of about five pounds per cubic foot.
8. A method for shooting a rifle, comprising resting a rifle in a channel of the gun cradle of claim 3 so that the rifle can be fired from a rest.
9. A method for cleaning a rifle, comprising resting a rifle in a channel of the gun cradle of claim 3 so that the rifle can be cleaned while resting in said channel.
