The point of the known styluses of this kind forms, as shown in elevation and bottom plan views in Figs. 1 to 4 a three-sided or four-sided pyramid. Styluses are also known which, as
shown in Fig. 3, are formed by an equilateral triangular cutting plate bevelled at the edges on both sides, which plate is detachahly connected to the shank of the stylus by a screw. As in the known styluses with pyramidic point" the base I of the point corresponds to the cross section of 10 the shank, these styluses are not very rigid. The

These objections are over- I come by employing the styluses according to the 25 invention.
The invention consists substantially in that the point worked from the material of the circular or non-circular shank is wider at its base than the shank of the stylus. When'cutting sound grooves even in hard records by means of the stylus according to the invention, all detrimental vibrating of thestylus is avoided, owing to the special shaping of its point, and consequently a very clean cut is produced because a continuous chip is cut from the record.- Records produced with this stylus therefore give a reproduction without disturbing secondary noises and distortion of tone. Moreover, by the shape of the point of the shaft, convenient flat gripping sur- 40 faces are produced thereon, which facilitate the correct insertion of the stylus into the holder of the sound box, which is very important for making records. A stylus for making sound records, comprising a shank'having a cutting point and cutting 20 side edges with flattened and converging front and rear faces, said cutting side edges being formed by an upwardly and rearwardly bevelled end of the stylus, forming a blunt v-shaped cutting edge, the stylus at the end of said bevels 25 being laterally enlarged, the converging rear face being inwardly and outwardly curved.
