Description

Oct. 15, 1935. w. c. HIERING BAG FRAME Filed Feb. 5, 1933 INVENTOR a. Q ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 15, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BAG FRAME Application February 3, 1933, Serial No. 655,065
1 Claim.
This invention relates to ladies hand bags, and more particularly to improvements in frames used in such hand bags.
In the manufacture of hand bags, the operation of attaching bag covering material to a bag frame has, heretofore, required considerable time and the services of skilled persons, thus presenting an important item in the cost of manufacturing the bag. Obviously, the provision of means to facilitate and simplify the attaching of the covering material to a frame Will materially decrease the cost of manufacture of hand bags, and enable them to be sold at a price to favorably compete with hand bags not provided with frames, at the same time retaining all of the desirable features attributed to hand bags having frames.
It is therefore, an object of this invention to provide a hand bag frame which can be manufactured at a relatively low cost, and to which bag covering material can be conveniently and readily attached.
A further object is the provision of a hand bag having a bag frame to which bag covering material is attached only to the longitudinal main section thereof, the hinge members of the frame lying outside of the bag and unattached to the covering material.
These and other advantageous objects which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bag frame embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a plan View of an element of the bag frame,
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the element,
Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the manner in which covering material is attached to the bag frame,
Fig. 5 is a partial end view of the element shown in Fig. 3,
Fig. 6 is an end view of a hand bag provided with my improved frame, and
Fig. 7 is an end view of a hand bag showing the frame provided with an ornamental device.
Referring to the drawing in Fig. 1, the bag frame is shown to comprise a pair of U-shaped members, each member having a longitudinal main section 8 and a pair of legs or hinge members 9, the lower ends of which are provided with flattened lips I I, which are hingedly connected to similar lips on the other frame member. The frame members are made from outwardly opening channels, the hinge members 9 being closed by pressing the free edges of the channel together to form substantially a tube, while the longitudinal main section 3 is open to receive the bag covering material it as shown in Fig. 4.
The hand bag has its two sides i2, connected at each end thereof by gussets IS, the bag covering material If! of the sides I2 extending above the upper edges of the gussets to provide flaps which, as stated above, are crimped between the channels of the sections 8. The bag covering material is attached only to the sections 8, and the hinge members 9 lie outside of the bag as shown in Fig. 15 6, the upper ends of the members 9 being cusped as shown in Fig. 5 to enable a neat fit when thesections 8 are crimped to hold the material [0.
In Fig. 7 is shown an ornament I4 attached to the hinge member 9, and illustrates the manner 20 in which my frame lends itself to ornamentation.
From the above description, it will be seen that I have provided an exceedingly simple bag frame which can be manufactured at a low cost, and to which bag covering material can be readily and conveniently attached by a simple crimping operation.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modifications, without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I 35 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a hand bag, a bag frame comprising frame members hingedly connectedtogether, each of said members being made from a channelled strip of material bent into a U-shape having a longitudinal section and leg members, the longitudinal section being in the form of an outwardly opening channel adapted to receive and be crimped over the bag material, the free edges of the leg members being pressed together to form substantially tubes adapted to overlie the gussets of the bag material, the upper ends of the leg members being cusped to provide a neat fit when the longitudinal section is crimped to hold the bag material.
