- the present disclosure generally relates to bedding, and more particularly to blankets that include vents to control the amount of heat trapped within the blankets.
- Sleep is critical for people to feel and perform their best, in every aspect of their lives. Sleep is an essential path to better health and reaching personal goals. Indeed, sleep affects everything from the ability to commit new information to memory to weight gain. It is therefore essential for people to use bedding that is comfortable, in order to achieve restful sleep.
- blankets are configured to provide insulation that keeps a sleeper's body heat between the blanket and a sleep surface to keep the sleeper warm as he or she sleeps. Often times, at least some of the heat between the blanket and the sleep surface will become trapped within the blanket itself, due to the non-porous or low airflow material the blanket is made from. As heat is trapped within the blanket, the blanket may become uncomfortably warm, thus causing the sleeper to remove the blanket. This disclosure describes an improvement over these prior art technologies.

Abstract
Description
- The present disclosure generally relates to bedding, and more particularly to blankets that include vents to control the amount of heat trapped within the blankets.
- Sleep is critical for people to feel and perform their best, in every aspect of their lives. Sleep is an essential path to better health and reaching personal goals. Indeed, sleep affects everything from the ability to commit new information to memory to weight gain. It is therefore essential for people to use bedding that is comfortable, in order to achieve restful sleep.
- Typically, blankets are configured to provide insulation that keeps a sleeper's body heat between the blanket and a sleep surface to keep the sleeper warm as he or she sleeps. Often times, at least some of the heat between the blanket and the sleep surface will become trapped within the blanket itself, due to the non-porous or low airflow material the blanket is made from. As heat is trapped within the blanket, the blanket may become uncomfortably warm, thus causing the sleeper to remove the blanket. This disclosure describes an improvement over these prior art technologies.
- In one embodiment, in accordance with the principles of the present disclosure, blanket, such as, for example, a vented blanket is provided. The vented blanket includes opposing first and second panels that define a cavity therebetween. A binding perimetrically bounds and joins the first and second panels. The blanket includes at least one zipper configured to move between a closed position in which air and/or thermals within the cavity is prevented from escaping through the binding and an open position in which air and/or thermals within the cavity is capable of escaping through the binding.
- In some embodiments, the blanket includes other fastening elements in place of or in addition to the zipper or zippers. The other fastening elements may include, for example, at least one hook and loop fastener (e.g., Velcro), snaps, buttons, at least one zip-locking closure, or a combination thereof.
- In some embodiments, the blanket includes a material that at least partially blocks an opening between top and bottom rows of the zipper when the zipper is in the open configuration. The material thus acts as a filter that allows air to move in and out of the cavity, while preventing unwanted debris and/or contaminants from entering the cavity.
- In some embodiments, the blanket includes a plurality of zippers that are spaced apart from one another. This allows a sleeper to open or close a selected number of the zippers to vary the amount of heat that is trapped within the blanket, thus allowing for selected amounts of ventilation.
- In some embodiments, the blanket includes a quilting pattern in at least one of the panels. In some embodiments, the quilting pattern defines a first pocket and a second pocket that is enclosed within the first pocket. In some embodiments, the zipper defines an opening between top and bottom rows of the zipper when the zipper is in the open configuration, the opening being in communication with the first pocket. This allows heat within the first pocket to move out of the first pocket through the opening and/or ambient air to move into the first pocket through the opening.

- The following discussion includes a description of a blanket, such as for example, a vented blanket in accordance with the principles of the present disclosure. Alternate embodiments are also disclosed. Reference will now be made in detail to the exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure, which are illustrated in the accompanying figures. Turning to
FIGS. 1-14 , there are illustrated components of a blanket, such as, for example, a ventedblanket 30. -
Blanket 30 is configured to lie on top of a mattress, with at least one sleeper positioned betweenblanket 30 and the mattress. In some embodiments,blanket 30 is configured to cover all or a portion of a top surface of the mattress. In some embodiments,blanket 30 is configured to be larger than the top surface of the mattress such that at least a portion ofblanket 30 covers all or a portion of a side surface of the mattress. In some embodiments,blanket 30 has substantially the same size and shape as the top surface of the mattress. In some embodiments, the mattress is a standard size mattress, such as, for example, a twin mattress, a full mattress, a queen mattress, a king mattress, or a California king mattress. In some embodiments, the mattress is a crib mattress. In some embodiments, the mattress is a memory foam mattress, an orthopedic mattress (with or without springs), a foam mattress, a mattress that includes gel, a couch mattress, lounge pad or airline or car seat. -
Blanket 30 includes various surface fabrics and/or quilting patterns that are configured to allow warm air and/or thermals from a sleeper's body to be trapped betweenblanket 30 and a mattress and/or withinblanket 30, and then dissipated away from the sleeper, thus preventing the warm air from circulating back to the sleeper. At the same time, ambient air from the external environment may pass through and circulate withinblanket 30, as discussed herein. -
Blanket 30 includes a top layer, such as, for example, apanel 32, as shown inFIG. 1 , for example.Panel 32 comprises anend surface 34 and anopposite end surface 36. 34, 36 extend between opposite side surfaces 38, 40.Surfaces 34, 36, 38 and 40 are edges ofSurfaces panel 32 that define a perimeter ofpanel 32. In some embodiments,panel 32 is rounded at all four corners. That is,panel 32 is rounded between 34 and 38, betweensurface surface 34 andsurface 40, betweensurface 36 andsurface 38 and betweensurface 36 andsurface 40. In embodiments whereinpanel 32 is rounded at all four corners,panel 32 resembles a rounded rectangle. This configuration allowspanel 32 to conform to the shape of a conventional mattress. In some embodiments,surface 34 may be disposed at alternate orientations relative to surface 36, such as, for example, parallel, transverse and/or other angular orientations such as acute or obtuse, tapered, and/or may be offset or staggered. Likewise, in some embodiments,surface 38 may be disposed at alternate orientations relative to surface 40, such as, for example, parallel, transverse and/or other angular orientations such as acute or obtuse, tapered, and/or may be offset or staggered. In some embodiments,panel 32 is variously shaped, such as, for example, oval, oblong, triangular, square, polygonal, irregular, uniform, non-uniform, offset, staggered, undulating, arcuate, variable and/or tapered, depending upon, for example, the shape of the mattress on which blanket 30 is being placed. - As shown in
FIG. 2 ,blanket 30 includes a bottom layer, such as, for example,panel 32A oppositepanel 32.Panel 32A comprises anend surface 34A and anopposite end surface 36A.Surface 34A engagessurface 34 andsurface 36A engagessurface 36. 34A, 36A extend between opposite side surfaces 38A, 40A.Surfaces Surface 38A engagessurface 38 andsurface 40A engagessurface 40. 34A, 36A, 38A and 40A are edges ofSurfaces panel 32A that define a perimeter ofpanel 32A. In some embodiments,panel 32A is rounded at all four corners. That is,panel 32A is rounded between 34A and 38A, betweensurface surface 34A andsurface 40A, betweensurface 36A andsurface 38A and betweensurface 36A andsurface 40A. In embodiments whereinpanel 32A is rounded at all four corners,panel 32A resembles a rounded rectangle. This configuration allowspanel 32A to conform to the shape of a conventional mattress. In some embodiments,surface 34A may be disposed at alternate orientations relative to surface 36A, such as, for example, parallel, transverse and/or other angular orientations such as acute or obtuse, tapered, and/or may be offset or staggered. Likewise, in some embodiments,surface 38A may be disposed at alternate orientations relative to surface 40A, such as, for example, parallel, transverse and/or other angular orientations such as acute or obtuse, tapered, and/or may be offset or staggered. In some embodiments,panel 32A is variously shaped, such as, for example, oval, oblong, triangular, square, polygonal, irregular, uniform, non-uniform, offset, staggered, undulating, arcuate, variable and/or tapered, depending upon, for example, the shape of the mattress that in which blanket 30 is being placed. -
Blanket 30 comprises binding 33 that covers 32, 32A to joinpanels 32, 32A together at the perimeters ofpanels 32, 32A. In some embodiments, binding 33 covers surfaces 34, 34A, 36, 36A, 38, 38A, 40 and 40A. That is, binding 33 is positioned aboutpanels 34, 34A, 36, 36A, 38, 38A, 40 and 40A such that an inner surface of binding 33 engages outer surfaces ofsurfaces 32, 32A, as shown inpanels FIG. 3 . In some embodiments, binding 33 joins 32, 32A viapanels stitching 33A that extends through the outer surface of binding 33 a first time, through opposite inner and outer surfaces ofpanel 32, through opposite inner and outer surfaces ofpanel 32A and then through the outer surface of binding 33 a second time, as shown inFIG. 3 . In some embodiments, binding 33 is rib knit jersey binding, or ripstop nylon binding or other materials or combination thereof. In some embodiments,blanket 30 includes single unit, such as, for example, a single unit that is made up ofpanel 32 andpanel 32A, wherein 32, 32A are joined by binding 33 andpanels 32, 32A and binding are bound together by stitching 33A. As such, the single unit cannot be taken apart without removingpanels stitching 33A. - In some embodiments, binding 33 comprises a material that is different that the
material panel 32 and/orpanel 32A is made from. In some embodiments, binding 33 comprises a material that is the same as thematerial panel 32 and/orpanel 32A is made from. In some embodiments, binding 33 is a decorative trim, such as, for example, a ruffle. In some embodiment, stitching 33A is a single needle closure. In some embodiments, stitching 33A is a single needle closure around all edges ofpanel 32 and/orpanel 32A. - As discussed herein,
32, 32A have inner surfaces that face one another. The inner surfaces ofpanels 32, 32A define apanels cavity 50 ofblanket 30 therebetween, as shown inFIG. 3 . In some embodiments,cavity 50 is configured for disposal of afill material 64. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 64 may be any material that provides insulation to keep a sleeper warm or cool. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 64 is configured to trap heat from the sleeper's body betweenblanket 30 and a sleep surface. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 64 comprises a single layer of material. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 64 comprises multiple layers of material. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 64 comprises a compliant material. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 64 comprises a non-compliant material. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 64 comprises polyester fiber, other man-made fiber or natural fiber, such as but not limited to wool, kapok, latex, foam, memory foam, feathers, gel, memory foam, and/or combinations or blends of the same. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 64 comprises 50% Cluster (e.g., 3D*32 mm w/silicon) and 50% Micro fiber (e.g., 2.5D*32 mm w/silicon. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 64 comprises a single piece of foam. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 64 is a material that makes blanket 30 a cooling blanket. In some embodiments,blanket 30 does not include any fill material between 32, 32A. That is,panels blanket 30 is free of any fill material. - In some embodiments, fill
material 64 has an uncompressed volume that is greater than an unexpanded volume ofcavity 50. Due to the material(s) from which 32, 32A are made and the relative volumes ofpanels fill material 64 andcavity 50,cavity 50 may expand asfill material 64 is positioned incavity 50. Ascavity 50 expands,cavity 50 and/orblanket 30 assumes the general shape offill material 64. In some embodiments,blanket 30 includes at least some air between 32, 32A and fillpanels material 64. In some embodiments, 32, 32A engagepanels fill material 64 such that there is no air between 32, 32A and fillpanels material 64. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 64 is porous such that air incavity 50 becomes trapped within the pores offill material 64. In some embodiments, air that is trapped within the pores offill material 64 can exitblanket 30 through 32, 32A and/or an opening created by a zipper, as discussed herein. In some embodiments, fillpanels material 30 is removably positioned withincavity 50. In some embodiments, fillmaterial 30 is secured withincavity 50 by stitching or some other means that fixesfill material 64 to at least one of 32, 32A.panels - When
32, 32A are joined by binding 33, a distance between opposite outer surfaces ofpanels 32, 32A defines a maximum height ofpanels blanket 30. In some embodiments,blanket 30 has a maximum height between about 0.10 inches and about 1.0 inch. In some embodiments,blanket 30 has a maximum height between about 0.20 inches and about 0.5 inches. In some embodiments,blanket 30 has a maximum height between about 0.20 inches and about 0.3 inches. In some embodiments,blanket 30 has a maximum height of 0.25 inches. It is envisioned that the maximum height ofblanket 30 can be between about 0.05 inches and 3 inches. In some embodiments,blanket 30 has a maximum height that is greater than 3 inches. In one embodiment, the maximum height ofblanket 30 is about 1.5 inches. - In some embodiments,
32, 32A are each made from a first material. In some embodiments, the first material comprises a porous base material. In some embodiments, the first material comprises a breathable material configured to create enhanced airflow to the sleep surface. In some embodiments, the first material comprises pores that are defined by fibers or strands of the first material, such as, for example, a fabric that makes up the first material. That is, the pores of the first material are the spaces between the fibers or strands of the first material. In some embodiments, the pores have a random configuration (size, shape and/or spacing) that is determined by the arrangement of the fibers or strands of the first material. In some embodiments, the first material has pores that are evenly spaced apart from one another. In some embodiments, the pores are variously shaped, such as, for example, oval, oblong, triangular, square, polygonal, irregular, uniform, non-uniform, offset, staggered, undulating, arcuate, variable and/or tapered. In some embodiments, the first material is a moisture dispersing material. In some embodiments, the first material is a breathable material, such as, for example a breathable fabric. In some embodiments, the first material is non-porous. In some embodiments, the first material has low porosity. In some embodiments, the first material is a heat and moisture wicking material, such as, for example, a porous material and is configured for temperature regulation capability. In some embodiments, the first material comprises acrylic, acetate, cotton, linen, silk, polyester, wool, nylon, rayon, spandex, lycra, hemp, manmade materials, natural materials (e.g., hemp) and blends and/or combinations thereof. Particular materials or blends of materials used are selected according the particular characteristics, price point, durability, and appearance to be achieved. In some embodiments, the first material comprises a fabric or other material that makespanels blanket 30 wind-proof. In some embodiments, the first material comprises a fabric or other material that makesblanket 30 water-proof. - In some embodiments,
panel 32 is made from a material that is different from thematerial panel 32A is made from. For example,panel 32 orpanel 32 may be made from the first material described above and the other one ofpanel 32 andpanel 32A may be made from a material that is different from the first material.Panel 32 may be made from a material that comprises acrylic, acetate, cotton, linen, silk, polyester, wool, nylon, rayon, spandex, lycra, hemp, manmade materials, natural materials (e.g., hemp) and blends and/or combinations thereof, andpanel 32A may be made from a material that is different from thematerial panel 32 is made from. Thematerial panel 32A is made from comprises acrylic, acetate, cotton, linen, silk, polyester, wool, nylon, rayon, spandex, lycra, hemp, manmade materials, natural materials (e.g., hemp) and blends and/or combinations thereof. In one embodiment,panel 32 is made from a breathable fabric andpanel 32A is made from a double-layered 3D mesh fabric. - In some embodiments,
32, 32A each include a single layer of material, such as, for example, a single layer of fabric. In some embodiments, at least one ofpanels 32, 32A includes multiple layers of material, such as, for example, fabric. A temperature-regulating material, such as a gel, may be applied interiorly topanels panel 32 and/orpanel 32A to provide cooling and/or warming functionality. The temperature-regulating material may be silicon or polyether gel formed into layers and applied shapes, as well as, formed ceramics, neoprene and other material technology for use to perform heat transfer and temperature regulation function. Depending on the nature and stability of the temperature-regulating material, the temperature-regulating material may be applied internally and/or externally topanel 32 and/orpanel 32A. - In some embodiments,
32, 32A each include a single layer of fabric. In some embodiments,panels 32, 32A each include multiple layers of fabric. In some embodiments, at least one ofpanels 32, 32A may include a water resistant or waterproof finish or material. That is, an outer surface of at least one ofpanels 32, 32A may include a water resistant or waterproof finish or material that prevents water and/or other liquids from enteringpanels cavity 50 ofblanket 30 and/or penetrating intopanel 32 orpanel 32A. In some embodiments, the water resistant or waterproof finish or material is gas permeable to allow air to move throughblanket 30. - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 and/or binding 33 includes one or a plurality of ventilation zippers 58. Ventilation zippers 58 are each movable between a closed configuration (FIG. 5A ) and an open configuration (FIG. 5B ). When ventilation zippers 58 are in the open configuration, ventilation zippers 58 each define anopening 72 that is in communication withcavity 50. When ventilation zippers 58 are in the open configurations, thermal release and airflow betweencavity 50 and theenvironment surrounding blanket 30 is increased, thus allowing for increased ventilation. When ventilation zippers 58 are in the closed configurations, thermal release and air flow betweencavity 50 and theenvironment surrounding blanket 30 is reduced or prevented, thus allowing for increased insulation. - In some embodiments, ventilation zippers 58 are positioned in different zones, as shown in
FIGS. 1 and 2 , to allow for different degrees of ventilation or insulation. For example,blanket 30 may include a plurality ofventilation zippers 58 that are spaced apart aboutblanket 30 thus allowing a sleeper the option to open one or more of the ventilation zippers 58, depending upon the desired amount of ventilation or insulation. As would be recognized by one of ordinary skill in the art, the more ventilation zippers that are opened, the quicker air can move from within blanket 30 (e.g., cavity 50) to an area outside ofblanket 30. Therefore, a sleeper can control the amount of ventilation or insulation provided byblanket 30 by selectively opening a desired number of ventilation zippers 58. For example, the sleeper can openadditional ventilation zippers 58 when increased ventilation is required by openingventilation zippers 58 to allow heat withincavity 50 to escapeblanket 30. In embodiments, ventilation zippers 58, rather than stitching 33A joinpanel 32 topanel 32A at portions ofblanket 30 that includeventilation zippers 58, as shown inFIG. 4 .Panel 32 is joined withpanel 32A by stitching 33A as described above in other portions ofblanket 30 that do not includeventilation zippers 58, as also shown inFIG. 4 . - In some embodiments, ventilation zippers 58 are positioned in different zones, as shown in
FIGS. 1 and 2 , to allow multiple sleepers to each control the degree of ventilation or insulation on one side ofblanket 30. For example, ventilation zippers 58 on one side ofblanket 30, such as, for example, a side ofblanket 30adjacent surface 38 can control the degree of ventilation or insulation on side ofblanket 30adjacent surface 38 andventilation zippers 58 on one side ofblanket 30, such as, for example, a side ofblanket 30adjacent surface 40 can control the degree of ventilation or insulation on side ofblanket 30adjacent surface 40. This configuration allows each sleeper to control individual thermal release or retention on their side ofblanket 30. For example, the sleeper on the right side of blanket 30 (e.g., the side ofblanket 30 adjacent surface 40) can control their core temperature, and the person on the left side of blanket 30 (e.g., the side ofblanket 30 adjacent surface 38) can also individually control their core temperature by each opening or closing their respective ventilation zipper(s) 58, as they prefer. - In some embodiments, each sleeper may have only a
single ventilation zipper 58 for their core (chest area). For example,blanket 30 may include twoventilation zippers 58, wherein one of the ventilation zippers 58 is positioned alongsurface 38, between 32, 34 and thesurfaces other ventilation zipper 58 is positioned alongsurface 40, between 32, 34.surfaces - In some embodiments, each sleeper may have
multiple ventilation zippers 58 for zones for custom temperature-regulation from head-to-toe, such that they have shoulder area and/or lower extremity (foot) zippers, with or without having the chest area zipper, or other body areas. For example, ventilation zippers 58 for one of the sleepers may be positioned alongsurface 38, wherein one ormore ventilation zippers 58 are positioned adjacent to one of sleeper's shoulder area and one or more ventilation zippers are positioned adjacent to the sleeper's lower extremity; ventilation zippers 58 for the other sleeper may be positioned alongsurface 40, wherein one ormore ventilation zippers 58 are positioned adjacent to the other sleeper's shoulder area and one or more ventilation zippers are positioned adjacent to the other sleeper's lower extremity. - As discussed above, binding 33 is positioned about
34, 34A, 36, 36A, 38, 38A, 40 and 40A such that an inner surface of binding 33 engages outer surfaces ofsurfaces 32, 32A, as shown inpanels FIG. 3 . Binding 33 includes afold 66 between one of 34, 36, 38, and 40 and another one ofsurfaces 34A, 36A, 38A and 40A, as also shown insurfaces FIG. 3 . In some embodiments, ventilation zippers 58 are positioned atfold 66 and each include a first portion, such as, for example, a first set ofteeth 58 a coupled to anupper portion 68 of binding 33 and a second portion, such as, for example, a second set ofteeth 58 b coupled to alower portion 70 of binding 33, as shown inFIGS. 5A and 5B . - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 includes asingle ventilation zipper 58. In some embodiments, thesingle ventilation zipper 58 is positioned along one or more of 34, 34A, 36, 36A, 38, 38A, 40 and 40A. In some embodiments, thesurfaces single ventilation zipper 58 extends around the entire perimeter ofblanket 30. In some embodiments, thesingle ventilation zipper 58 extends around a majority of the perimeter ofblanket 30. -
FIG. 5A shows one ofventilation zippers 58 in the closed configuration andFIG. 5B shows one ofventilation zippers 58 in the open configuration. As shown inFIG. 5B , upper and 68, 70 of binding 33 are separated from one another by opening 72 when ventilation zippers 58 are in the open configuration. Upper andlower portions 68, 70 of binding 33 engage one another to close opening 72 when ventilation zippers 58 are in the closed configuration, as shown inlower portions FIG. 5A .Opening 72 is in communication withcavity 50 such that air withincavity 50 ofblanket 30 can move in and out ofcavity 50 throughopening 72. In some embodiments, heated air withincavity 50 moves out ofcavity 50 throughopening 72 and cooler, ambient air moves intocavity 50 throughopening 72. - Ventilation zippers 58 each include a
slider 74 and apull tab 76 that is attached toslider 74, as shown inFIGS. 5A and 5B .Slider 74 is moved relative to 58 a, 58 b in a first direction, such as, for example, direction A shown inteeth FIG. 5A to movezipper 58 from the closed configuration to the open configuration. Asslider 74 moves in the first direction,slider 74 pullsteeth 58 a away fromteeth 58 b.Slider 74 may then be moved in a second direction, such as, for example, direction B shown inFIG. 5A to movezipper 58 from the open configuration to the closed configuration. Asslider 74 moves in the second direction,slider 74 brings 58 a, 58 b together such thatteeth teeth 58 a interlock withteeth 58 b. - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 includes a filter, such as, for example, amaterial 78 that at least partially blocks opening 72 whenzipper 58 is in the open configuration. In some embodiments,material 78 is porous to allow air to move in and out ofcavity 50 ofblanket 30 throughmaterial 78 andopening 72. In some embodiments,material 78 comprises fabric. In some embodiments, the fabric is a breathable fabric. In some embodiments,material 78 comprises the same material as at least one of 32, 32A. In some embodiments,panels material 78 comprises a material that is different than the material that at least one of 32, 32A is made from. In some embodiments,panels material 78 comprises one or more of the materials discussed herein. In some embodiments,material 78 comprises a top end 78 a that is coupled toupper portion 68 of binding 33 and abottom end 78 b that is coupled tolower portion 70 of binding 33. In some embodiments, top end 78 a is coupled topanel 32 andbottom end 78 b is coupled topanel 32A.Material 78 is configured to prevent dust, debris or other contaminants from enteringcavity 50 ofblanket 30 whenzipper 58 is in the open configuration, while still allowing air to move in and out ofcavity 50 ofblanket 30 throughmaterial 78 andopening 72. In some embodiments,material 78 collapses withincavity 50 such thatmaterial 78 is positioned entirely withincavity 50 whenzipper 58 is in the closed configuration. - In some embodiments, shown in
FIGS. 6 and 7 ,blanket 30 includesstitching 35 that extends through inner and outer surfaces ofpanel 32 andpanel 32A.Stitching 35 defines a quilting pattern forms one or a plurality ofpockets 37 betweenpanel 32 andpanel 32A. In some embodiments, pockets 37 are defined by inner surfaces of 32, 32A that face one another andpanels stitching 35. In some embodiments, pockets 37 are defined by the inner surfaces of 32, 32A that face one another,panels stitching 33A andstitching 35. In some embodiments, at least one ofpockets 37 is in communication withopening 72 such that air withinpockets 37 can move out ofpockets 37 throughopening 72 or ambient air can move throughopening 72 and intopockets 37 whenzipper 58 is in open configuration. In some embodiments, the quilting pattern defined by stitching 35 is designed to circulate air throughblanket 30, as well as withinblanket 30, across the sleeper's body. -
Pockets 37 are configured to trap heat from a user's body that moves intoblanket 30 throughpanel 32 and/orpanel 32A to prevent the heat from returning to the sleep surface, so as not to increase the temperature of the sleep surface, as discussed herein. As would be recognized by one of ordinary skill in the art, a single pocket or a series of pockets that are positioned side-by-side across a width ofblanket 30 or top-to-bottom along a length ofblanket 30 may not be sufficient to properly trap heat withinblanket 30. As such,blanket 30 includes a plurality ofpockets 37, wherein some ofpockets 37 are positioned withinother pockets 37. It has been found that this configuration ofpockets 37 properly retains heat from a sleeper's body withinpockets 37 in a manner that prevents the heat withinpockets 37 from returning to the sleep surface. In some embodiments, heated air withinpockets 37 will move throughpanel 32 and/orpanel 32A and into an environment, such as, for example, a room, wherein the ambient temperature in the environment is less than the temperature of the air within pockets 37. This will lower the temperature of the air withinpockets 37, thus preventingblanket 30 from feeling too warm or hot to the sleeper. - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 comprises at least onefirst pocket 37, such as, for example, at least onefirst pocket 37 a that extends fromsurface 38 to surface 40, and at least onesecond pocket 37, such as for example, at least onesecond pocket 37 b that is enclosed withinfirst pocket 37 a, as shown inFIGS. 6 and 7 . In some embodiments, at least one offirst pockets 37 a is in communication with one ofopenings 72 whenzipper 58 is in the open configuration such that air within at least one offirst pockets 37 a can move out of at least one offirst pockets 37 a throughopening 72 or ambient air can move throughopening 72 and into at least one offirst pockets 37 a whenzipper 58 is in open configuration. First pockets 37 a are each defined by the inner surfaces of 32, 32A that face one another,panels stitching 33A andstitching 35. - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 comprises one or a plurality ofsecond pockets 37 b enclosed withinfirst pocket 37 a, as shown inFIGS. 6 and 7 .Second pockets 37 b are defined by the inner surfaces of 32, 32A that face one another andpanels stitching 35.Second pockets 37 b are spaced apart from stitching 33A. In some embodiments,second pockets 37 b each have the same configuration. However, in some embodiments,second pockets 37 b may have similar or different configurations, such as, for example, shapes and/or sizes. That is,second pockets 37 b may have identical shapes, sizes and/or configurations or different shapes, sizes and/or configurations. In some embodiments,second pockets 37 b are evenly spaced apart from one another. In some embodiments,first pocket 37 a and/or at least one ofsecond pockets 37 b is variously shaped, such as, for example, circular, oval, oblong, triangular, square, polygonal, irregular, uniform, non-uniform, offset, staggered, undulating, arcuate, variable and/or tapered. In some embodiments, at least one ofsecond pockets 37 b is in communication with one ofopenings 72 whenzipper 58 is in the open configuration such that air within at least one ofsecond pockets 37 b can move out of at least one ofsecond pockets 37 b throughopening 72 or ambient air can move throughopening 72 and into at least one ofsecond pockets 37 b whenzipper 58 is in open configuration. - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 may include at least onethird pocket 37, such as, for example, at least onethird pocket 37 c enclosed within at least one ofsecond pockets 37 b, as shown inFIGS. 6 and 7 . In some embodiments,blanket 30 includes at least onethird pocket 37 c enclosed within each ofsecond pockets 37 b, as shown inFIGS. 6 and 7 .Third pockets 37 c are defined by the inner surfaces of 32, 32A that face one another andpanels stitching 35.Third pockets 37 c are spaced apart from stitching 33A. In some embodiments,third pockets 37 c each have the same configuration. However, in some embodiments,third pockets 37 c may have similar or different configurations, such as, for example, shapes and/or sizes. That is,third pockets 37 c may have identical shapes, sizes and/or configurations or different shapes, sizes and/or configurations. In some embodiments,third pockets 37 c are evenly spaced apart from one another. In some embodiments,blanket 30 includes asecond pocket 37 b and athird pocket 37 c positioned between two-second pockets 37 b and twothird pockets 37 c. In some embodiments, at least one ofthird pockets 37 c is variously shaped, such as, for example, circular, oval, oblong, triangular, square, polygonal, irregular, uniform, non-uniform, offset, staggered, undulating, arcuate, variable and/or tapered. In some embodiments, at least one ofthird pockets 37 c is in communication with one ofopenings 72 whenzipper 58 is in the open configuration such that air within at least one ofthird pockets 37 c can move out of at least one ofthird pockets 37 b throughopening 72 or ambient air can move throughopening 72 and into at least one ofthird pockets 37 c whenzipper 58 is in open configuration. - In some embodiments,
first pocket 37 a includes a first row, such as, for example, row R1, shown inFIG. 6 , that includes a plurality ofsecond pockets 37 b and a plurality ofthird pockets 37 c that are each positioned within one ofsecond pockets 37 b in row R1.First pocket 37 a also includes a second row, such as, for example, row R2, shown inFIG. 6 , that includes a plurality ofsecond pockets 37 b and a plurality ofthird pockets 37 c that are each positioned within one ofsecond pockets 37 b in row R2. As shown inFIG. 6 ,second pockets 37 b in row R1 are spaced apart fromsecond pockets 37 b in row R2. - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 includes at least onefourth pocket 37, such as, for example, at least onefourth pocket 37 d that extends fromsurface 38 to surface 40, and at least onefifth pocket 37, such as for example, at least onefifth pocket 37 e that is enclosed withinfourth pocket 37 d, as shown inFIG. 6 . In some embodiments,fourth pocket 37 d abutsfirst pocket 37 a. That is, thesame stitching 35 that defines a portion offirst pocket 37 a defines at least a portion offourth pocket 37 d. In some embodiments,fourth pocket 37 d has the same configuration asfirst pocket 37 a. However, in some embodiments,fourth pocket 37 d has a different configuration fromfirst pocket 37 a. That is,fourth pocket 37 d may have an identical shape, size and/or configuration asfirst pocket 37 a or a different shape, size and/or configuration thanfirst pocket 37 a.Fourth pocket 37 d is defined by the inner surfaces of 32, 32A that face one another,panels stitching 33A andstitching 35. In some embodiments,blanket 30 comprises a plurality offifth pockets 37 e enclosed withinfourth pocket 37 d, as shown inFIG. 1 .Fifth pockets 37 e are defined by the inner surfaces of 32, 32A that face one another andpanels stitching 35.Fifth pockets 37 e are spaced apart from stitching 33A. In some embodiments,fifth pockets 37 e each have the same configuration. However, in some embodiments,fifth pockets 37 e may have similar or different configurations, such as, for example, shapes and/or sizes. That is,fifth pockets 37 e may have identical shapes, sizes and/or configurations or different shapes, sizes and/or configurations. In some embodiments,fifth pockets 37 e are evenly spaced apart from one another. In some embodiments,fourth pocket 37 d and/or at least one offifth pockets 37 e is variously shaped, such as, for example, circular, oval, oblong, triangular, square, polygonal, irregular, uniform, non-uniform, offset, staggered, undulating, arcuate, variable and/or tapered. In some embodiments, at least one of fourth and 37 d, 37 e is in communication with one offifth pockets openings 72 whenzipper 58 is in the open configuration such that air within at least one of fourth and 37 d, 37 e can move out of at least one of fourth andfifth pockets 37 d, 37 e through opening 72 or ambient air can move throughfifth pockets opening 72 and into at least one of fourth and 37 d, 37 e whenfifth pockets zipper 58 is in open configuration. - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 may include at least onesixth pocket 37, such as, for example, at least one sixth pocket 37 f enclosed within at least one offifth pockets 37 e, as shown inFIG. 6 . In some embodiments,blanket 30 includes a sixth pocket 37 f enclosed within each offifth pockets 37 e, as shown inFIG. 6 . Sixth pockets 37 f are defined by the inner surfaces of 32, 32A that face one another andpanels stitching 35. Sixth pockets 37 f are spaced apart from stitching 33A. In some embodiments, sixth pockets 37 f each have the same configuration. However, in some embodiments, sixth pockets 37 f may have similar or different configurations, such as, for example, shapes and/or sizes. That is, sixth pockets 37 f may have identical shapes, sizes and/or configurations or different shapes, sizes and/or configurations. In some embodiments, sixth pockets 37 f are evenly spaced apart from one another. In some embodiments,blanket 30 includes afifth pocket 37 e and a sixth pocket 37 f positioned between twofifth pockets 37 e and two sixth pockets 37 f. In some embodiments, at least one of sixth pockets 37 f is variously shaped, such as, for example, circular, oval, oblong, triangular, square, polygonal, irregular, uniform, non-uniform, offset, staggered, undulating, arcuate, variable and/or tapered. In some embodiments, at least one of sixth pockets 37 f is in communication with one ofopenings 72 whenzipper 58 is in the open configuration such that air within at least one of sixth pockets 37 f can move out of at least one of sixth pockets 37 f through opening 72 or ambient air can move throughopening 72 and into at least one of sixth pockets 37 f whenzipper 58 is in open configuration. - In some embodiments,
fourth pocket 37 d includes a first row, such as, for example, row R3, shown inFIG. 6 , that includes a plurality offifth pockets 37 e and a plurality of sixth pockets 37 f that are each positioned within one offifth pockets 37 e in row R3.Fourth pocket 37 d also includes a second row, such as, for example, row R4, shown inFIG. 6 , that includes a plurality offifth pockets 37 e and a plurality of sixth pockets 37 f that are each positioned within one offifth pockets 37 e in row R4. As shown inFIG. 6 ,fifth pockets 37 e in row R3 are spaced apart fromfifth pockets 37 e in row R4. - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 may include at least oneadditional pocket 37, such as, for example, at least one pocket 37 g, that has the same or a similar configuration asfirst pocket 37 a and is positioned oppositefourth pocket 37 d.First pocket 37 a is positioned betweenfourth pocket 37 d and pocket 37 g. In some embodiments, pocket 37 g abutsfirst pocket 37 a. That is, thesame stitching 35 that defines a portion offirst pocket 37 a defines at least a portion of pocket 37 g. Likewise,blanket 30 may include at least oneadditional pocket 37, such as, for example,pocket 37 h, that has the same or a similar configuration asfirst pocket 37 a orfourth pocket 37 d and is positioned oppositefirst pocket 37 a.Fourth pocket 37 d is positioned betweenfirst pocket 37 a andpocket 37 h. In some embodiments,pocket 37 h abutsfourth pocket 37 d. That is, thesame stitching 35 that defines a portion offourth pocket 37 d defines at least a portion ofpocket 37 h. It is envisioned that the number of additional pockets, such as, for example, pocket 37 g and/orpocket 37 h may depend upon the length ofblanket 30 and/or the size offirst pocket 37 a and/orfourth pocket 37 d. That is,blanket 30 may include one or a plurality of pockets 37 g and/or one or a plurality ofpockets 37 h. In some embodiments, at least one ofpockets 37 g, 37 h is in communication with one ofopenings 72 whenzipper 58 is in the open configuration such that air within at least one ofpockets 37 g, 37 h can move out of at least one ofpockets 37 g, 37 h through opening 72 or ambient air can move throughopening 72 and into at least one ofpockets 37 g, 37 h whenzipper 58 is in open configuration. - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 may include one or a plurality ofadditional pockets 37 that is/are enclosed within at least one of 37 a, 37 b, 37 c, 37 d, 37 e, 37 f, 37 g and/or 37 h. The additional pocket(s) 37 may be variously shaped, such as, for example, circular, oval, oblong, triangular, square, polygonal, irregular, uniform, non-uniform, offset, staggered, undulating, arcuate, variable and/or tapered.pockets - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 may include one or more channels, such as, for example, open air channels that allow for cooling and/or heating. In some embodiments, at least one of the channels is defined by one or more ofpockets 37. That is, the channels are the space within pockets 37. In some embodiments, the channels are configured to bring cool air from the room environment across the lower surface of blanket 30 (e.g., the outer surface ofpanel 32A) and through the material that defines the channels and pockets 37 to provide additional ventilation for temperature-regulation to the sleeper, which may result in a cooler feeling, or alternately, when desired, a warmer feeling. In some embodiments, the cooler feeling and the warmer feeling is due to the air temperature of the room environment in which blanket 30 is positioned. In some embodiments, the warmer feeling is due to a heating element that is embedded inblanket 30. In some embodiments, one or more heating elements are positioned within one or more of the channels. In some embodiments, the cooler feeling and/or the warmer feeling is created by temperature-regulating materials. In some embodiments, the temperature-regulating materials are embedded inblanket 30. In some embodiments, the temperature-regulating material is embedded within one or more of the channels. - In some embodiments, the channels can have various shape configurations, such as, for example, circular, oval, oblong, square, rectangular, polygonal, irregular, uniform, non-uniform, variable and/or tapered. In some embodiments, one or more of the channels has an end adjacent to an edge of at least one of
32, 32A such that air from the room environment can enter the channels and move laterally through the channels to provide ventilation. In some embodiments,panels blanket 30 is configured such that one or more of the channels extends from one edge of at least one of 32, 32A (e.g.,panels surface 38 or surface 34) to another edge of at least one of 32, 32A, such as, for example, an opposite edge of at least one ofpanels 32, 32A (e.g.,panels surface 40 or surface 36). This configuration allows air from the room environment to move continuously from one side or end ofblanket 30 to an opposite side or end ofblanket 30 such that the air can exitblanket 30 on the opposite side or end from where the air entered using a single channel. The air will provide a warm or cool feel to a sleeper that is resting underblanket 30 as the air moves through the channel. - In some embodiments, at least one of the channels includes a top surface that engages the inner surface of
panel 32, a bottom surface that engages the inner surface ofpanel 32A and spaced apart side surfaces that that each extend from the top surface to the bottom surface such that the channels resemble a hollow tube. The channels include openings at opposite ends of the channel. This configuration allows ambient air to flow continuously throughblanket 30. - In some embodiments, the channels are spaced apart from one another such that air in one channel cannot enter another channel. In some embodiments, at least one of the channels is in communication with at least one of the other channels such that air in one of the channels can enter another one of the channels.
- In some embodiments, stitching 35 reduces the profile of stitched portions of
32, 32A to create different elevations of the fabric structure, so that there are highs and lows of profile that increase air circulation in around and through outer surfaces ofpanels 32, 32A, and between the outer surfaces ofpanels panel 32 andpanel 32A. -
Zippers 58 are positioned about a perimeter ofblanket 30, as shown inFIGS. 1 and 2 . In some embodiments, shown inFIGS. 8-14 ,blanket 30 includes at least onecentral zipper 80 in place of or in addition tozippers 58. In some embodiments, shown inFIGS. 8-10 ,zippers 80 are each positioned solely inpanel 32. In some embodiments, shown inFIGS. 11-14 ,zippers 80 are each positioned in 32, 32A. In some embodiments,panels blanket 30 includes other fastening elements in place of or in addition to the zipper or zippers 80. The other fastening elements may include, for example, at least one hook and loop fastener (e.g., Velcro), snaps, buttons, at least one zip-locking closure, or a combination thereof. In one embodiment,blanket 30 includes asingle zipper 80 positioned between 38, 40. In one embodiment, thesurfaces single zipper 80 is positioned equidistantly between 38, 40. In one embodiment, thesurfaces single zipper 80 extends along all or a portion of the length of 38, 40. In one embodiment,surfaces blanket 30 includes asingle zipper 80 positioned between 34, 36. In one embodiment, thesurfaces single zipper 80 is positioned equidistantly between 34, 36. In one embodiment, thesurfaces single zipper 80 extends along all or a portion of the length of 34, 36.surfaces - In some embodiments, shown in
FIGS. 8-10 ,zippers 80 each include a first set ofteeth 80 a coupled topanel 32 and a second set ofteeth 80 b coupled topanel 32, as shown inFIG. 10 .Zippers 80 are spaced apart from one another.Zippers 80 are each movable between a closed configuration (FIG. 8 ) and an open configuration (FIG. 10 ). As shown inFIG. 10 , 80 a, 80 b are separated from one another by anteeth opening 82 whenzippers 80 are in the open configuration. 80 a, 80 b engage one another to close opening 82 whenTeeth zippers 80 are in the closed configuration, as shown inFIG. 8 .Opening 82 is in communication withcavity 50 such that air withincavity 50 ofblanket 30 can move in and out ofcavity 50 throughopening 82. In some embodiments, heated air withincavity 50 moves out ofcavity 50 throughopening 82 and cooler, ambient air moves intocavity 50 throughopening 82. -
Zippers 80 each include a slider that is the same as or similar toslider 74 and apull tab 76 that is attached to the slider. The slider andpull tab 84 moved relative to 80 a, 80 b in a first direction to moveteeth zipper 80 from the closed configuration to the open configuration. As the slider andpull tab 84 move in the first direction, the slider pullsteeth 80 a away fromteeth 80 b. The slider andpull tab 84 may then be moved in a second direction to movezipper 80 from the open configuration to the closed configuration. As the slider andpull tab 84 move in the second direction, the slider brings 80 a, 80 b together such thatteeth teeth 80 a interlock withteeth 80 b. - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 includes a filter, such as, for example, amaterial 86 that at least partially blocks opening 82 whenzipper 80 is in the open configuration, as shown inFIG. 10 . In some embodiments,material 86 is porous to allow air to move in and out ofcavity 50 ofblanket 30 throughmaterial 86 andopening 82. In some embodiments,material 86 comprises fabric. In some embodiments, the fabric is a breathable fabric. In some embodiments,material 86 comprises the same material as at least one of 32, 32A. In some embodiments,panels material 86 comprises one or more of the materials discussed herein. In some embodiments,material 86 is coupled to the inner surface ofpanel 32.Material 86 is configured to prevent dust, debris or other contaminants from enteringcavity 50 ofblanket 30 whenzipper 80 is in the open configuration, while still allowing air to move in and out ofcavity 50 ofblanket 30 throughmaterial 86 andopening 82. In some embodiments,material 86 collapses withincavity 50 such thatmaterial 86 is positioned entirely withincavity 50 whenzipper 80 is in the closed configuration. - In some embodiments, shown in
FIGS. 11-14 ,zippers 80 each include a first set ofteeth 80 c coupled to each of 32, 32A and a second set ofpanels teeth 80 d coupled to each ofpanels 32A. In some embodiments, 80 c, 80teeth d join panel 32 withpanel 32A.Zippers 80 are each movable between a closed configuration (FIGS. 11 and 12 ) and an open configuration (FIGS. 13 and 14 ). As shown inFIGS. 13 and 14 , 80 c, 80 d are separated from one another by anteeth aperture 88 whenzippers 80 are in the open configuration. In some embodiments,apertures 88 are spaced apart fromcavity 50 byzippers 80. 80 a, 80 b engage one another to closeTeeth aperture 88 whenzippers 80 are in the closed configuration, as shown inFIGS. 11 and 12 .Aperture 88 extends through inner and outer surfaces ofpanel 32 and inner and outer surfaces ofpanel 32 such that ambient air can move directly throughaperture 88 to contact the sleeper when the sleeper is positioned betweenblanket 30 and a mattress. -
Zippers 80 each include a slider that is the same as or similar toslider 74 andpull tab 76. The slider andpull tab 84 moved relative to 80 c, 80 d in a first direction to moveteeth zipper 80 from the closed configuration to the open configuration. As the slider andpull tab 84 move in the first direction, the slider pullsteeth 80 c away fromteeth 80 d. The slider andpull tab 84 may then be moved in a second direction to movezipper 80 from the open configuration to the closed configuration. As the slider andpull tab 84 move in the second direction, the slider brings 80 c, 80 d together such thatteeth teeth 80 c interlock withteeth 80 d. - In some embodiments,
blanket 30 may include a heating and/or cooling element withincavity 50 and/or within at least one of 37 a, 37 b, 37 c, 37 d, 37 e, 37 f, 38 g to allow a sleeper to match the temperature ofpockets cavity 50 and/or at least one of 37 a, 37 b, 37 c, 37 d, 37 e, 37 f, 38 g according to his or her sleep preference. In some embodiments, the sleeper can set the heating and/or cooling element to regulate the temperature withinpockets cavity 50 and/or at least one of 37 a, 37 b, 37 c, 37 d, 37 e, 37 f, 38 g to a desired temperature such that if the temperature withinpockets cavity 50 and/or at least one of 37 a, 37 b, 37 c, 37 d, 37 e, 37 f, 38 g deviates from the set temperature, the heating and/or cooling element will increase or decrease the temperature withinpockets cavity 50 and/or at least one of 37 a, 37 b, 37 c, 37 d, 37 e, 37 f, 38 g. In some embodiments, the heating and/or cooling element is a thermoelectric device that is capable of heating and cooling air.pockets - It will be understood that various modifications may be made to the embodiments disclosed herein. For example, features of any one embodiment can be combined with features of any other embodiment. Therefore, the above description should not be construed as limiting, but merely as exemplification of the various embodiments. Those skilled in the art will envision other modifications within the scope and spirit of the claims appended hereto.
