EASY OPENING DREDGING CONTAINER Filed Sept. 12, 1934 Guy M S Patented Oct. 8, 1935 EASY-OPENING DREDGING CONTAINER Paul H. Knop, Maywood, Ill., assignor to Continental Can Company, Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application September 12, 1934, Serial No. 743,759

1 Claim. (01. 221-451) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in easy opening dredging containers and more particularly to a hermetically closed container wherein the ends are secured to the body portion by double seaming.

An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein the body portion is provided with score lines adjacent one end thereof for separating the end from the body, with an inserted collar which is formed with an integral closed end and provided with openings therein for dredging the contents of the container when the end has been removed.

A further object of the invention is to provide an easy opening dredging container of the above type wherein the inserted collar is so dimensioned at its closed end as to receive the cover after opening for reclosing.

These and further objects will be hereinafter more fully disclosed.

Referring to the drawing- Figure 1 is a side view of the container partially in section before the tearing strip is removed;

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken in side elevation of the container with the cover removed;

Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the cover replaced for reclosing the dredge openings;

Fig. 4 is a plan view of the container with the cover removed showing one order in which the dredge openings may be arranged.

The invention broadly is directed to an easy opening, dredging container made of metal wherein the body portion adjacent one end thereof is scored so as to provide a tearing strip which may be removed for separating the end from the body. Located within the container and frictionally secured thereto is an inserted collar. This inserted collar is attached to the body beneath the upper score line and extends upwardly into substantial contact with the inner face of the end. A portion of the collar between the score lines is inset. The end is provided with a member which is adapted to slip down over the upper inset portion of the collar for reclosing the same. The collar is preferably of one piece drawn metal having a closed integral end which is provided with dredging openings for dispensing the contents of the container when the cover has been removed.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the improved container includes a body portion 5 made in the usual manner from a blank, the edges of which are joined in a side seam. Attached to the body are closing ends which are secured thereto preferably by double seaming. The upper end is indicated in the drawing at 6, and the double seam for joining the upper end to the body is indicated at l. The body wall is provided with a lower score line 8 and an upper score line 9.

Between these score lines is the tearing strip. This tearing strip may be made in any suitable manner and one or more score lines may be used or any other way provided for weakening the body wall so that the strip may be torn out. The strip is indicated at It. this strip is torn out the end is released from the body.

Located within the container is an inserted collar II. This collar is preferably of one piece, drawn metal and is provided with an integral 10 closed end l2. Suitable dredge openings iii are formed in the closed end of the collar for dispensing the contents of the container when the cover is.removed. These openings may be arranged in any suitable manner or design before the container is assembled or may be if desired punched out by hand after the container is first opened in which case their outline may be scored. The collar is dimensioned so as to frictionally fit within the container and its downward movement is arrested by the bead M in the can body. The portion of the collar l5 opposite the score lines is inset from the body wall as clearly shown in the drawing. The end 6 for closing the container is provided with a depending member it. This member, l8 as shown is formed by drawing the metal. The metal is turned down or drawn first in one direction and then in another so as to form this depending member. This produces an outside slip member which is adapted to frictionally engage the inset portion of the collar for reclosing the same after the cover has been removed.

It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the shaping of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An easy opening dredging container comprising a body having ends seamed thereto, said body having spaced score lines adjacent the double seam at the upper end thereof forming a tearing strip whereby the upper end may be released from said can body, a collar located Within the can body and rigidly attached thereto, said collar being provided with an integral closed end having openings centrally there- 50 through for dredging the contents of the container when the tearing strip has been removed and the upper end of the can'released and. removed, said collar being inset in the region of the score lines, and said upper end having a depending portion adapted to frictionally fit the inset portion of the collar whereby said detached upper end can be used for reclosing the container.
