2 Claims.
This invention relates to a rotary brush and the principal object is to provide a new and useful article, which may be particularly advantageous for brushing or massaging hair, although I do not wish to be limited to the use of the hair as the device may be used for many other purposes.
A further object is to provide a rotary brush in the construction of which the motor is fixedly supported relative to the handle and is enclosed in a brush carrying member rotatably mounted relative thereto and upon which brushes may be removably mounted for rotation therewith.
A further object is to provide a rotary brush of simple construction and wherein the respective parts are of such a nature that they may be assembled in compact relationship and may be easily and quickly disassembled when desirous of cleaning, oiling or for the interchanging of brushes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of co-operating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming a part of the present application, in which:

Fig. 4 is an end view looking towards the opposite end of my device from that shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the cover-bearing plate for the inner end of the brush carrying member.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section view of the mounting arrangement between the handle and the motor of my device.
Like numerals of reference designate correspondingparts throughout the different views.
1 is a handle having a longitudinal opening therein through which the electric wires 8 extend to supply electrical energy to the motor referred to hereinafter. 9 is a bracket, the body portion of which is cylindrical in shape and has an inner circumference designed to engage tightly over the inner end of the handle 'I. The cylindrical portion of the bracket 9 is abruptly enlarged as at ID to provide a shoulder, the purpose of which is referred to hereinafter. The inner end of the bracket 9 is formed with a plurality of supporting legs I I, upon which the motor I2 is fixedly mounted and supported relative to the handle I. The
ends of the electric wires 8 are suitably connected to the motor H2. The shaft M of the motor protrudes outwardly a reasonable distance at the end opposite to that adjacent the handle 1.

I6 is a brush carrying member of cylindrical form, having an integral end plate i? formed integral or suitably attached to the hub it. This end plate l? is provided with a plurality of draft openings 58 formed therein to per- 10 mit passage of air therethrough for keeping the motor I2 cool. it is a cover-bearing plate having an L-shaped flange 2%} providing an annular base, and stop respectively for the open end of the brush carrying member it. The open end of the 15 brush carrying member it is provided with an outwardly extending flange 2i designed to fit against the outwardly protruding portion of the L-shaped flange 2% and be fixedly attached thereto by means of the bolts or screws 22. The cover- 20 bearing plate It is provided with a central annular opening. The cover-bearing plate [9 (preferably) carries a ball-bearing arrangement 23 designed to snugly fit and rotate on the ball-bearing race 24 mounted and supported on the bracket 25 9 adjacent the abrupt shoulder Ill. The ferrule 25, adjustably carried on the inner end of the handle 1 and fitting over that portion of the cylindrical bracket 9 that engages over the inner end of the handle 1, retains the cover-bearing plate I9 3 and its associate parts, the ball-bearing arrangement 23 and the ball-bearing race 24, tightly against the abrupt shoulder H] of the brackets 9.
The cylindrical body portion of the brush carrying member IE is provided with raised portions 26, which portions are formed opposite each other and at an angle corresponding to each other. They may be formed any place around the cylindrical portion of the brush carr ing member l6 and there may be more than two opposite each 40 other if so desired. 2'5 is a brush foundation portion of cylindrical formation, which preferably has a metallic backing 28 of cylindrical formation fixedly attached thereto. The metallic backing 28 and brush foundation portion 2? are prefer- 45 ably formed with co-acting grooves 2b" relative to the raised portion 26 hereinbefore mentioned so that the brush foundation backing 2l28 may be shoved longitudinally over the brush carrying member l6 and with a slight turn will provide engagement therewith against longitudinal displacement. The purpose of having these grooves angularly disposed is so that the brush foundation backing 2l28 will have a constant and inward screw thrust towards the outwardly extending fiange 2| of the brush carrying member I6 when being rotated upon operation of the motor I2. Any other desired means may be employed to prevent longitudinal movement of the brush foundation backing 21-28 when placed in operative position,
The brush foundation 21 carries and radially supports bristles 29. I do not wish to be limited precisely in regard to the brush foundation member or any particular kind of bristle or their equivalent. Bristles of various stiffness may be assembled with the brush foundation 21 provide a variety of brushing possibilities. Also, the bristles may be hair, fibre, rubber, wire, steel or any other of the many variations commonly used in building up brush structures for many 7 and different uses.
30 is a guard covering over approximately onehalf of the rotary brush hereinbefore described. The outer edge of the guard is flanged inwardly as at 3|. The inner end of the guard is closed by the end member 32, having draft openings therethrough and the central portion thereof straddling over the ferrule 25. This central portion is provided with an outwardly directed. flange 33, which is engaged in any desired manner to the ferrule 25 and fixedly supported relative to the handle I.
The cover-bearing plate I9 is provided with a plurality of angularly disposed draft openings 34- which, whenrrotating, will draw the air in to the brush carrying member in which the motor is enclosed. The air will escape at the opposite end through the openings I8. In the construction as above described, the motor I2 and guard 3|] are mounted in fixed relative position to the handle I while the brush retaining member I6 and the brush 2I2829 are rotatably mounted relative thereto with both ends of the same supported relative to a common axial centre.
The foregoing specification and annexed drawing disclose the preferred embodiment of my inso as to;
vention, but it is to be understood that minor changes may be resorted to in the commercial adaptation of my invention without departing from the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed. 7
What I claim as new is:
l. A rotary brush, comprising a handle; a motor supported from said handle; a brush carrying member enclosing said motor; said brush carrying member having a connection at one end 10 with and being driven by the. drive shaft of said motor; the opposite end of said brush carrying member being rotatably supported relative to said handle; a brush supported'on and carried by said brush carrying member; a co-engaging helical ridge and groove connection between the outer surface of said member and the inner surface of said brush; and a radially projecting shoulder at one end of said member against which shoulder said brush abuts, whereby said brush may be readily attached to and detached from said member, but whereby rotation of said brush by the motor tends to merely tighten said connection.
2. In a motor driven rotary brush having a handle and a driving motor mounted thereon, a brush mounting assembly comprising a cylindrical brush carrying member enclosing the motor, means at one end of said member for establishing a driving connection with the motor, means at the opposite end of said member for rotatably supporting said member upon the handle, a cylindrical brush snuglyfitting over the exterior of said member, and means for removably mounting said brush on said member comprising disengageable guide means carried by said member and said brush cooperating to move said member and brush axially with respect to each other upon relative rotation thereof, and stop means to limit such axial movement, whereby rotation of said brush by the motor tends to merely tighten the connection between said member and brush.
