This invention relates to trucks for railway rolling stock and, more particularly, to the construction of the side frames, bolsters and associated parts, as well as the formation and ar- 5 rangement of the bolster supporting springs.
The principal object of my invention, generally considered, is the provision of trucks for railway rolling stock utilizing bothrplate and coil spring means for the support of the associated holsters.
l0. Another object of my invention is the provision of a railway truck in which a single elliptic spring is disposed outside of and parallel to the frame resting onan outboard extensionV from the tension member of said frame for the support of 1 5 an associated bolster.
A further object of my invention is the provision of coil Vsprings associated with the elliptic spring above referred to for the support of the bolster, said coil springs being disposed back of the elliptic spring in the bolster opening and desirably placed so as to balance the elliptic spring about the longitudinal center line of the frame. A still further object of my invention is'the provision of a truck in which the side frames support bolster springs comprising both plate and lcoil means, said side frameshaving extensions underlying those portions of the spring means disposed beyond the bolster opening, said eX- tensions being recessed on their upper surfaces to receive a portion of the plate spring means for properly positioning the same, the supported bolster being correspondingly recessed for receiving the corresponding upper portion of the plate spring means. An additional object of Vmy invention is the provision of a nest of coil springs disposed between plates with a fastening bolt and an elliptic spring associated therewith but not retained by said plates, whereby said coil springs may be placed in position for the support of a bolster separately from the associated elliptic spring.
Other objects and advantagesV of the invenation relating to the particular` arrangement and construction of the various parts will become apparent as the description proceeds. l

Referring to the drawings in detail, likeparts being designated by like reference characters, 25 and first considering the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, there is shown Va portion of a truck comprising a side frame I, preferably formed of cast steel, although it will be obvious that certain advantages of my 30 invention may be obtained when using frames of other than cast construction. The frame l cornprises a compression member 2, a tension member 3, and bolster guide columns or strut portions 4, spacing intermediate portions of said compres- 35 sion and tension members, leaving a. window opening 5 therebetween. The compression and tension members extend outwardly to'unite with each other and associated journal boxes (not shown) beyond the guide columns, as will be understood.V 4o
The tension member 3 between the bolster guide columns is preferably generally box-shaped in section and comprises an upper web 6 forming a spring seat portion, a lower web 1, and side webs 8. The upper web 6 is desirably extended 45 Voutwardly and inwardly, as indicated at 9 and I0, to provide an adequate spring-seating area, and the side webs 8 are desirably bulged, as indicated at H, beneath said extensions for properly supporting the same. 50

plank. A nest of springs, generally represented by the reference character I5, rests on said plank and, in turn, serves for the support of the bolster I6. Said bolster, in the present embodiment, is formed with lugs I1 interlocking with the bolster guide columns when in normal or elevated position, as illustrated, and adapted to be inserted or removed when lowered to a position between the outwardly offset portions I8 of the bolster guide columns, as will be understood.
In the present embodiment, the nest of springs I5 serving to support the bolster I6 from the frame I comprises a plate or elliptic spring device I9 which, in the present embodiment, comprises two groups of spring plates 2Q arranged in stepped formation, as usual, held by upper and lower spring bands 2l and 22, and with their ends engaging end blocks 23. In the present embodiment, the spring plank I2 is apertured, as indicated at 24, to receive the lower spring hand 22, and the bolster is formed with a downwardly opening recess 25 receiving the upper spring band 2|, whereby said elliptic spring I9 is held in proper position outwardly of and substantially parallel to the frame I and supported by the outboard extension of the tension member 3. The spring plank I2, which is desirably formed channel-shape in section with a lower web and upstanding ilanges, desirably has the flanges cut away or decreased in height beneath the elliptic spring I 9, as indicated at 3B, to avoid interference between the elliptic spring and spring plank even when the spring is compressed.
Supplementing the elliptic spring I9 is a nest of helical or coil springs 26, which nest, in the present embodiment, comprises three double coil A. R. A. bolster springs 21 mounted between a lower spring plate 28 and an upper spring plate 29, said plates having spring positioning collars 30 about which the inner coils of the springs 21 fit and nibs or bosses 3l which engage corresponding pockets in the spring plank and bolster, respectively, for holding said plates in proper position. A bolt 32 and associated nut 33 desirably serve for retaining the plates in proper position, whereby the helical springs may be assembled for application and removal as a unit; The spring plates are not formed large enough to receive the elliptic spring I9, because it is considered desirable to apply and remove the coil springs separately from the elliptic spring, thereby avoiding the necessity of handling the entire weight and size of the nest of springs at one time. The coil spring nest 2S is desirably of such capacity and so positioned that the normal bolster supporting force thereof balances that of the elliptic spring about the longitudinal center line or plane of the associated frame. Although only one frame has been illustrated, it will be understood that the other ends of the bolster and spring plank are received in a corresponding bolster or window opening in a companion frame on the other side of the truck.
Referring now to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figure 3, a construction is there disclosed which is identical with Figure 2 except that the nest of helical or coil springs 26a supported on the plank I2a for the support of the bolster I62L from the frame Ia is arranged with the apex of the triangle pointed inwardly, or toward the center of the truck, rather than outwardly, and correspondingly adjusted in position so as to balance the elliptic spring I 9a.
Referring now to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figure 4, a construction is there disclosed which is identical with that of Figures 1 and 2 except that the nest of coil or helical springs 26b comprises four rather than three double coil springs 21b provided with correspondingly modified plates and resting on a plank I2b 5 for the support of a bolster I6b, the position of said nest of springs being correspondingly changed, as compared with Figures l and 2, so as to balance the associated elliptic or plate spring I9b about the longitudinal center line or plane of 10 the frame Ib. Referring now to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, a construction is there disclosed which substantially correspends with Figures 1 and 2, except that a frame 15 Ic of the type described and claimed in my Patent No. 1,652,808 of December 13, 1927 is utilized, the spring plank I2c being correspondingly modied to interlock with the upward convolutions or reinforcemcnts 34 and the helical springs 21c being 20 employed without spring plates and held in position by squaring lugs I3c on the frame extended up through the plank I2c to provide spring positioning means for the inner coils of the springs 21C. The bolster llic is desirably provided with 25 corresponding depending lugs 35 serving for positioning the upper ends of the springs 21, said springs being arranged in triangular formation, like the springs of the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2, and positioned so as to balance the elliptic 30 spring I9c about the longitudinal center line or plane of the frame Ic.
Referring now to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figures 7 and 8, a construction is there disclosed corresponding with that of 35 Figures l and 2, except that no spring plank or plates are employed, the springs 2'!d being held in position by spring-centering lugs i3d and 35d, as in the embodiment of Figures 5 and 6, with the springs positioned so as to balance the elliptic 40 spring ISd about the longitudinal center line or plane of the frame Id, said coil and elliptic or plate springs assisting one another for the support of the bolster IBd.
Referring now to the embodiment of my in- 45 vention illustrated in Figures 9 and 10, a construction is there disclosed which is substantially identical with that of Figures 5 and 6, except that spring plates 28P are utilized for the springs 21e, said plates being held together and positioned 50 like those illustrated in Figures l and 2, the nest of coil springs 2lie being positioned so as to balance the associated elliptic or plate spring I9e about the longitudinal center line or plane of the associated frame Ie for jointly supporting the 55 bolster I Se. Referring now to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figure 11, a construction is there disclosed which corresponds with that of Figures 1 and 2, except that only one helical 60 spring unit 21f is employed without any spring plate and positioned far enough inward to balance the associated elliptic spring |91, both of said springs being utilized with a spring plank Y I2f and serving jointly for the support of an associated bolster I 5f from a frame I f.

In a railway truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening dened by a tension member having outboard and inboard 75 extensions, plate spring means resting on one of said extensions and disposed generally parallel to said frame, coil spring means disposed in said opening, other coil spring means supported by said other extension so as to balance the distribution of load about the longitudinal center line of the frame, and a bolster supported by said plate and coil spring means.

In a railway truck, in combination, a side :frame formed with a bolster opening, the lower portion of said opening being dened by the upper web of a tension member, said upper web having outboard and inboard extensions, plate spring means resting on one of said extensions, edisposed generally parallel to said frame, and. entirely to one side of the portions above said tension member, coil spring means at least a portion of which is supported by said other extension and of such capacity and disposed at such .a distance from the longitudinal central plane of the frame, as to balance the distribution of load about said longitudinal central plane, and a bolster supported by said plate and coil spring means.

In a railway truck, in combination, side frames formed with bolster openings each defined by a tension member having outboard and in` board extensions, plate spring means resting directly on one of said extensions of each frame 'and disposed entirely to one side of the portions of said frame above its tension member, coil spring means supported by the other extension of each frame and of such capacity and disposed at such a distance from the longitudinal central plane of the frame, that it balances the distribution of load about said plane, and a bolster supported by said plate and coil spring means and interlocked with the frames.

In a railway truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a tension member having an outboard extension, an elliptic spring supported by said extension and disposed Vparallel to said frame entirely beyond the portions thereon above said tension member, coil spring means supported by said frame inwardly of said elliptic spring, said coil spring means being formed with upper and lower plates held together by fastening means whereby it may be handled as a unit, and a bolster supported by said elliptic spring and coil spring means.

In a railway truck, in combination, a side frame formed with an outboard extension from a lower member thereof, an elliptic spring resting on said extension, disposed parallel to said frame, and positioned entirely beyond the portions of said frame above said extension, coil spring means supported on said frame inwardly of said elliptic spring and assembled for handling as a unit independently of said elliptic spring, and a bolster supported on said elliptic spring and coil spring means and formed with a recess receiving a portion of said elliptic spring.

In a railway truck, in combination, a side frame having a compression member, a tension member, bolster guide columns connecting intermediate portions of said compression and ten- :sion members and spaced to leave a bolster opening therebetween, portions of said tension member being upwardly embossed to form diagonal,
reinforcements intersecting the lower corners of said bolster opening, the upper web of said tension member beneath said bolster opening being extended outwardly beyond the guide columns, an elliptic spring supported on said extension and disposed generally parallel to said frame entirely beyond said guide columns, coil spring means supported on said frame inwardly of said elliptic spring and comprising one coil disposed with its axis substantially in the longitudinalz central plane of said frame between said reinforcements, a plurality of coils disposed inwardly of said central coil, and a bolster supported on said elliptic spring and all of said coils.
14. In a railway truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening dened by` a tension member having an outboard extension, .an elliptic spring resting on said extension and disposed parallel to said frame entirely beyond 'the portions thereof above said tension member,
:a nest of coil springs disposed inwardly of said elliptic spring and comprising a coil with its normally vertical axis positioned substantially in the longitudinal central plane of said frame, a

frame and positioned inwardly of said plane so as to balance the distribution of load about said plane, and a bolster supported by all of said springs.

In a railway truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a tension member having an outboard extension, an elliptic spring resting on said extension and disposed parallel to said frame .and beyond the portions thereof above said extension, coil spring means supported by said frame inwardly of said elliptic spring and comprising a coil with its normally vertical axis positioned substantially in the longitudinal central plane of said frame, a plurality of coils spaced longitudinally of said frame and positioned inwardly of said central coil so as to balance the distribution of load about said plane, and a bolster supported by said springs.

In a railway truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a bolster opening dened by Y; a tension member having outboard and inboard` extensions, an elliptic spring resting on one of said extensions and disposed generally parallel to said frame and at one side of the portions thereof above said extensions, and coil spring means with at least a portion thereof supported by said DONALD S.
