Description

J. J. HENZE PACKING CRATE Sept. 3, 1935.
V Filed June 5, 1933 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS UlA arranged at the corners of the box, and
Patented Sept. 3, 1935 irrnsmr anni@ N 'r forric The presentinvention pertains to a novel shipping box or crate; having special reference to that class of box or crate which is Vconstructed Vo f` wood slats that are vsecured. together at their corners by vertical posts and gussets.
i The primary Vobject of the presentinvention is to provide a shipping-boxer crate 'thatmay be constructed in various sizesto accommodate'various articles, the box or crate being provided with `vertical reinforcing posts at the corners of the sides thereof in a manner to render it rugged and capable of withstanding rough usage and in a manner whereby said posts occupy a minimum amount of space and therefore do not interfere with the operation of packing materials or articles within said box or crate. The vertical posts are triangular in `cross section and are secured within the corners of the box in a manner toV engage the inside faces of the slats by means of bolts and staples that are passed through metal gussets that engage the outside faces of the box, the bolts and staples passingl through the slats adjacent their abuttingV ends and thereby rigidly securing said abutting ends between` the corner posts and the gussets.
With the above and other ends in view the invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Y Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shipping box `or crate constructed in accordance with the present invention; n
Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof;
Fig. 3 is aV fragmentary perspective View illustrative of thelmanner in which the gussets are Fig. l is a fragmentary cross sectional View taken substantially along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Like characters of reference are employed throughout to designate corresponding parts.
The present box or crate is formed with side panels and end panels constructed of slats that are reinforced with wire interlaced therebetween and the present invention is particularly directed to the manner in which said side and end panels are secured together at their abutting corners. The side panels are formed with upper rails l and lower rails 2 with a plurality of comparatively thin slats 3 interposed therebetween and secured by meansV of reinforcing-wirres 5. The end panels are formed with upper rails 5 and lower rails 6 with a plurality of comparatively thin slats 'l interposed therebetween and secured together by means of reinforcing wires The side and end Vpanels are arranged `with `their `ends abutting and extending outwardly at right angles to each-other. A post f5) which triangular in cross section has one of its angles formed asa right angle `whereby it iits into the `apex of the angle formedby the abutting side and end panels and engages a portion of 4the inside `faces of the slats and rails forming said panels. A lgusset-lll isksecured, such as `by rivets Mito the abutting ends of the rails land 5 and a bolt l2 is passed through said gusset and through the vertical post .fl and is riveted over or secured by a nut in a manner to nrmlytie the gusset lll and the post 9 together. rivets lli to the abutting ends of the bottom rails 2 and t and a bolt l5 is passed through the gusset i5 and vertical post S and is riveted in a manner to firmly tie Vthe bottom of the post Si and the gusset i3 together. are arranged so that they pierce the top and bottorn rails in a line that bisects the meeting angle of the side and end panels and the triangular formation of the post 9 provides a flat surface at right angles to the line of stress exerted upon said bolts which conveniently permits tightening and fastening of said bolts such as by riveting thesame or applying nuts or like means. In addition to the strengthening feature resulting from the triangular cross section the posts t citer a minimum amount of interference to packing operations dueto the manner in which they are mounted inside the box.
To rigidly secure the slats 3 and l to the corner posts 9 there are provided angular metal gusf .sets l E and securing members are passed through said gussets, through the slats 3 and 'i adjacent their abutting ends and into the vertical posts S. The securing members in the present case are in the nature of staples 46'. v
'Ihe bottom Il is secured to the side panels in any suitable manner known to the trade, the bottom also being formed of slats and reinforced by wires i8.
In the above described manner the side and end panels are rigidly secured together with their abutting ends interposed between the gussets and the vertical corner posts 9 and the construction provides a box which is rugged and capable of withstanding considerable rough usage without distortion or collapsing of the same inasmuch as the panels are individually secured in proper angular relation with each other.
Although a specic embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described it A gusset i3 is secured by The bolts l2 and l5 P is to be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the inven tion, and such changes are contemplated.
What I claim is:
1. A corner construction for boxes comprising two side rails meeting at their ends to form a right angle, a metallic gusset plate for said rails covering said angle exteriorly, said gusset comprising two sides meeting in a right angle, a filler having a right angled apex interiorly of the angle formed by said rails, and securing means for securing said gusset to said filler, said securing means imposing pressure on said filler against the interior of said sides, said securing means extending through the apex of said gusset and comprising means for compressing the apex of said gusset against the external apex of said members whereby the sides of said gusset lie flush against the sides of said members.
2. A corner construction for boxes comprising two side rails meeting at their ends to form a right angle, a metallic gusset plate for said rails covering said angle exteriorly, said gusset comprising two sides meeting in a right angle, a filler having a right angled apex interiorly of the angle formed by said rails, and securing means for securing said gusset to said ller, said securing means imposing pressure on said ller against the interior of said sides, said securing means extending through the apex of said gusset and comprising means for compressing the apex of said gusset against the external apex of said members whereby the sides of said gusset lie flush against the sides of said members, the sides of said gusset extending along said members for a greater distance than said ller, and securing means comprising rivets extending through the ends of said gusset sides and solely through said side rails at each side of said iiller.
3. A corner construction for boxes comprising two side rails meeting at their ends to form a right angle, a metallic gusset plate for said rails covering said angle exteriorly, said gusset comprising two sides meeting in a right angle, a ller having a right angled apex interiorly of the angle formed by said rails, and securing means for securing said gusset to said ller, said securing means imposing pressure on said filler against the interior of said sides, said securing means extending through the apex of said gusset and comprising means for compressing the apex of said gusset against the external apex of said members whereby the sides of said gusset lie flush against the sides of said members, said gusset being ribbed above and below the point where said securing means passes therethrough whereby local buckling is prevented.
