These notches formfguide grooves for the bail, the legs ofwhich are. receive d therein the assembled m'opstick' head. In the closed position of the mopstick head-the clamping section of the bail is held tightly against the clamping section of the cross-head. In the open position of the mopstick head the bail is loose in the notches and there is a substantial amount of play between the bail and the clamping section of the cross-head. In constructions heretofore used, it has been found that during shipment and unpackingof the mopsticks, some of the mopstick heads are opened and the bail member is frequently jarred from the notches in the clamping section of the cross-head. The recipient of such mopstick heads, that is, those in which the bail. member is loosened from the notches of the cross-head, returns these mopsticks to the manufacturer at the manufacturers expense. Likewise, in use, the bail memberlmay become disengaged from the cross-head.

An advantage of my invention is the fact that in a mopstick head constructed in accordance therewith, the bail can not becomedisengaged from the cross-head while the mopstick head is assembled upon a mopstick. In accordance with my invention I provide a cross-head for a mopstick head which includes a socket for the mopstick handle and a transverse clamping section, the clamping section being notched at each end to receive the bail member and including means which partially span the notches and hold the bail member in the notches.

Specifically, the side edge of each of the notches for the bail member formed in the clamping section of the cross-head is undercut on the same side as the operating lever of the mopstick head. The undercut recess forms a groove transverse tothe clamping section which receives the corresponding leg of the bail when the mopstick head is in the open position and the tongue formed by the undercut extends into the plane of .the bail member in the closed position. The distance between the pivotal connection of the lever to the'mopstick handle and the connection of the 'legs of the bail to the operatinglever causes the bail, when the mopstick head is opened, to'be inclined to the plane Y of the mopstick head. In this inclined position the legs of the bail enter and slide in the under cut recesses or grooves in the side edges of the notches from which they can notbe displaced.

a spring 3 surrounding the socket section 2;: of the cross-head, a lever 4 pivotally secured to the spring and a bail 5piv'ota1ly secured to the lever at approximately the center thereof and extending in clamping relation with the cross-head. The cross-head 2 is made from a single piece of "sheetmetal which is stamped intothe shape shown. In this shape the cross-head includes a. 20 socket section 2a and the transverse clamping section 21). The face of the clamping section hasthe usual channel or trough-shape. ,At each end, the base of the clamping section is notched, the notches running longitudinally of the clamping section. A side of each notch in an end of the clamping section of the cross-head is undercut forming a tongue 2c.

The socket section of the cross-head receives the end of the mops'tick handle. The spring 3 surrounds the socketsection and the lower portion of the mopstickhandle. To the last convo lution of this spring the lever iis secured, the I lever having two wings-to which the ends'of legs 50. of the bail 5 are pivotally secured. The legs 5a of the bail extend from the lever and through the notches in the ends of the clamping section of the cross-head. The lever is mounted on the same side of the mop'stick handle as the undercut sides of the notches which receive, the bail mem ber. In the closed position ofthe mopstick head, as shown in full lines in the drawing, the tongue 20 enters the plane of the bail. In opening the mopstick head, that is, in all positions of the'operating lever other than'the closed position 014 V the mopstick head, the ends of the legssecured 1 to the lever are removed from. the. plane of the mopstick handle bya distance equal to substantially half the lever. This causes the plane of the bail to be inclined to the plane of the m opstick handle which includes the clampingsection of the cross-head. In such inclined position, shown in broken lines in Fig. 2, the legs of thebail are fully received in the undercut recesses in the sides of the notches of the clamping section of the 55 cross-head and cannot be accidentally dlsplaced or disconnected from the head, irrespective or the amountlof play of the bail member relative to the cross-head."

In a mopstick of the'type including "a operating lever pivotally secured to the mopstick handle and a single bailimember pivot'asllyi curedto the operating lever, a cross head includ ing a socket for the mopstick handle and a transverse clamping section; the feature or novelty which consists m the transverse clamping section' of the 'c'ros's-head having a notch -"at each end to receivethe bail and. anunderecut in that side of each notchwhich is located on the same sideof a plane containing the center-line of the transverse section of the cross -head and the axis of the mopstie'k handle as the bail operating lever which undercut s receive the bail member upon moving the bail operating lever away from the mopstick handle and the tongues formed by the V undercuts extending at an acute angle to the plane containing the center line of the transverse section of the cross-head and the axis of the mopstick handle.
