TRIMMING INSTALLATION y Filed NOV. l5, 1930 vzo Patented Aug. 20,` i935L s PATENT Aogrrirzl-z 2,012,243 s TRIMMING INSTALLATION Walter I. Jones, ArlingtornMass., assignol" to United-Carr Fastener Corporation, Cambridge, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts Application November 13, 1930, Serial No. 495,393
2V Claims.
My invention aims to provide improvements -in trimming installations and particularly improvements in installations involving the upholsteryr of vehicle bodies and the like by ymeans of detachably secured panels.
In the drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my inventiontf Figure V1 is an .elevation viewof a portion of anv upholstery panel as viewed from the inner face thereof;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure! and'also showing, in section, a portion of the upholstery supporting structure;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 and also shows a portion of the supporting structure; andV Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the fastener per se. Referring to the embodiment of my invention illustrated by the drawing, I haveshown a trim- Yming installation for automobiles and the like. f -The trimming installation shown includes a vbacking l of cardboard, or the like, covered on oneside by flexible material 2 suchas cloth or the like and snap fastener members 3 for attaching the panel to `al framework by engagement in apertures 5, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
It is a feature of my invention to attach the snap fastener members 3 to the panel without forming holes therein. Therefore, Imay ship` the panels and fasteners separatelyto the point where the panels are vto be attached. VTo accomplish the idea of providingan'imperforate panel, so far as the fasteners are concerned, I provide anges 6 at the periphery "of the panel (a portion of one flange being shown) and at theinner face thereof, as shown in Figs. l and 2. A flange is formed by bending over a portion of the backing i. If the covering material 2 is f used the edges thereof are folded over the edges Y of the' backing and over the free edges of the flanges 6, so that no fastening means is necessary to secure the finishing material to the backing. 4 An adhesive material mayr be used at A (Fig. y2)
if desirable, but it is not necessary, -asr will ybe hereinafter described. Alsoan jadhesive ma,-
v terial may be `applied intermittently between the upholstery covered flanges Brand the backingv to keep vthe flanges in position during transitY if itV is necessary. l
The snap fastener members 3 may be'made of wire, as illustrated, or from sheet metal, or in any suitable manner providingy each is provided with a U-shaped rbase 1 providing a clip-like portion. Therefore, itis a simple and easy mat- (Cl. 45e-13s) Since the fastener is made of yieldable mate--A rial the legs may be spread wheny forced over the flange 6 and therefore the flange is gripped tightly and the fastener'is held in a predetermined position. rIt shouldY be understood, however,ithat the fasteners Vmay shift laterally toalign with corresponding 4apertures v5. in the sup;
portingy structuref4 when the panel is being attached. J
. My invention is simple, easy to assemble, veryv inexpensive to manufacture and exceedingly ecient. That portion of each base l of the fastenersl which extends between the flange'and the back` ment between the body of the backing I and the flanges Y6- when the installation is complete. Furthermore, the flexible lmaterial is gripped tightly by the bases of the lfasteners and held in is used. y l Y While `I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment Vof my invention, I do not -wish to be limited thereby because the scope of ,I mtr/invention is best defined by the following.
claims. Y- n, y Y
I claim: n s f 1 1. In combination, relatively stiff covering material having an edge turned back into substantial parallelism with the body, thereof, a flexible covering material coveringthe front side of the stiff covering material and wrapped about inner and outer'faces of the turned-back portion vthere 2o ing extends nearlyv to the edge of the panel and,
Y place thereby even though no adhesive material material and comprising ka Yhead and means disposed in spaced relation thereto and substantially parallel to said head and a shank formed to make snap fastening engagement with'amember to which the covering material is `to be attached,
said head and means being disposed on opposite -sides ofthe Ycovered turned-back portion and gripping the same between them.
2. In combination, a relatively stiff coveringrna-V terial'of cardboard andthe like, a narrow strip of materiallocated at one face a-dacent to the edge.
and in substantial parallelism with the covering 'materiaLv a flexible covering 4material covering l the front side of the stiff covering material and Wrapped about inner and outer faces of the narrow strip and a snap fastener comprising a head and means disposed in spaced relation thereto and substantially parallel to said head and a shank formed to make snap fastening engagement with a member to Which the covering material is to be attached, said head and meansgbeing disposed on opposite sides of the covered strip and gripping the strip and exible covering between them.
