IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED FLOUR CHEST, SIFTER,AND SAFE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,195, dated March 12, 1878; application filed January 21, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES H. OBER and REUBEN H. OBER, of Garrettsville, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Oombined Flour Oh'est, Sifter, and Safe; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of the same, in which specification- Figure l is a front view of the flour bin or chest. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, a portion of the upper part of which is represented as broken away that the inside may be seen. Fig. 3 is a top view of the inside. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the flour-sifter.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.

This invention consists of a piece of furniture the upper portion of which is a receptacle for holding flour, meal, &c., and which consists of a sheet-metal chest or bin having slanting sides. In the bottom of said bin or chest is an opening or outlet, through which the contents of the bin are drawn into a sifter attached to the outlet. Said outlet is provided with a slide, whereby it is closed and opened, as the case may be.

The lower part of said piece of furniture is a cupboard, wherein to keep domestic utensils, &c.

The invention is morefully set forth and described, as follows:

In the upper part of the case Ais secured a bin or chest, B, Figs. 1. and 2, consisting of sheet metal. It will be observed that the two sides 0 G are slanting inwardly from the top to the bottom. at which point they are united, forming an angular bottom to the bin or chest, of which D is the outlet, having attached thereto a sifter, J, through which the flour from the bin is sifted into a pan or other vessel from time to time, as it may be wanted.

The bottom of the bin is provided with a slide, whereby the opening D is closed or opened by the rod F, as indicated by the dotted lines (1. Access is had to the inside of the bin from the top, of which G is the cover. Immediately under the bin or chest is a cupboard, H, to which access is had through the drop-door I to gain access to the sifter for flour or meal, into which it is drawn from the bin. Said sifter consists of a vessel, J, alluded to above, provided with a perforated bottom, K, Fig. 4. In said vessel is an agitator, L, secured to a shaft, 0, whereby it is revolved by turning the crank M.

The slide E above referred to is provided with a pair of arms, N, the purpose of which is to agitate or break up theflour, so that it may not lodge in the bin and fail to come down.

The lower part of the case A above alluded to consists of a cupboard, O, of whichP and Q are the doors, and R the shelves therein. Said cupboard may be used as a safe wherein to keep articles of food, and which is ventilated by the wire-screened windows A.

The drop door or leaf I is maintained. in a horizontal position, as shown. in Fig. 2, by hangers B. The door, when thus extended, affords a shelf or molding-board on which to work the flour into bread, 860. Its nearness to the cupboard H and to the flour bin and sifter makes it especially convenient for the purpose specified.

The flour-bin being constructed of sheet metal, is, consequently, rat and mouse proof, and also, from its being inclosed in the case A, it is effectually excluded from dust, &c., and at the same time is easily accessible for the purpose above set forth.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The flour bin or chest B, slide E, provided with agitating-arms N, in combination with the sifter J and agitator L, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.

2. In combination with the flour-bin B and sifter J, the chamber H and hinged door or molding-board I, and safe 0, in the manner as described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The herein-described combined flour bin, sifter, and safe, consisting of the chest or bin B, for holding flour, meal, &c., and provided with a slide and agitating-screen for sifting the flour, and a molding-board or door and safe arranged in relation to each other, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose specified.
