arrow on Figure 1 and the whole folded on to the ground and the folded Chair can then be picked up with the same hand by grasping the then adjacent front ends of the three frames l, 2 and '1.
The Chair in folded position is shown in Figure 3.
The Chair can also be erected from the folded and carried position by the employment of only the one hand by a reversal of the operations just. mentioned.
The Chair described has many points of advantage. Within the range of adjustment provided by the recesses li? the back is held very firmly in the adjusted position by friction due to the weight of the person seated in the Chair and nevertheless adjustment can be effected by the person seated Without leaving the Chair. Accidental collapsing rom the reclining position (Figure 2) when the Chair is occupied is impossible as even if the notches 52 were absent the members 9 would be locked between the frames i and When folded up as shown in Figure 3 the length is Very much less than in the case of a-n ordinary deck Chair in which a frame such as i is continued to form the back frame. The folded Chair is thus much more convenient to carry.
The upper surfaces of the recesses m may if desired be roughened to provide an improved frie-- tion grip. Obviously the order of the frames 2, l, and member i may be varied in respect of which is the inner one, which the outer one, and which the .middle one. Thus frame 2 may be made the .outer one, frame i the middle one and frame member tl the inner one. The projections 9 would then be on the inside of the side rails of frame 2 and might be constituted by a' continuous bar between the two side rails.
l Figure 4 illustr ates a Chair having fixed side frames 13. The seat fra-mevmember l is pivoted to these side frames at 5 and the back frame 2 is pivoted thereto at 3. A canvas seat is slung between the upper end 8 of the back frame 2 and Recesses li] and notches &2 are provided in the seat frame member to provide for a range of adjustments similar to those described in respect of the ,deck Chair illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, and as .the sides of the seat frame member i and of the back frame 2 are conveniently in the same plane the members 9 of Figures 1-3 are dispensed with member about the pivot 5 and raise the rear por- .tion of the'said frame member towards the pivot 3, thus providing a friction grip between the lower ends a of the sides of the back frame and the upper surface of the sides of the seat frame member. The construction permits of the forward folding .of the back by first raising the front of 'the seat frame member.
Stops indicated at lt may if desired be provided to limit the possible 'movement of the seat frame member when the back is disengaged therefrom and folded forwards.
Figure 5 illustrates a Chair which is very similar to that shown in Figure 4. In place of the can- Vas seat however an upholstered seat is provided formed in two portions 'la and 1b connected together in a hinged manner at 15. The front of the portion 'ib is connected in a hinged manner to the front of the seat frame member at 6 and the top of the portion 'la' is similarly connected to the top of the back frame at 8.
I claim:
1. A foldable Chair with adjustable back, comprising a back frame and a seat frame member, wherein the back frame is pivoted, at a point intermediate its ends and preferably towards the lower end, to a part of the frame of the Chair and the lower end of the back frame when in erected position bears upon the bottoms of elongated recesses provided on the upper surface of the rear portion of the seat frame member which is pivoted intermediate its front and rear ends to the same said part of the frame of the Chair at a point somewhat forward of the lower end of the back frame in erected position, the ends of the said recesses constituting shoulders limiting the backward and forward adjustment of the lower end of the back frame, and wherein a flexible seat is connected at its front end in a hinged manner to the front end of the seat frame member and at its rear end in a similar manner to the back frame, preferably at or near the upper end of the latter.
2. A foldable Chair according to claim 1, wherein the bottoms of the said elongated recesses are curved to give an improved friction grip throughout the range of adjustment of the back frame.
3. A construction of Chair according to claim 1, in which the seat frame member is adapted to contact with the ground at its rear end and also the forward part of the frame to which the back frame and the seat frame member are pivoted.
4. A construction of Chair according to claim 1, in which the part of the frame of the Chair to which the back frame and seat frame member are pivoted, comprises rigid side frames adap'ted to rest on the ground and to form the sole support of the Chair.
5. A construction of chair according to claim 1, wherein the bottoms of the said elongated recesses are curved to give an improved friction grip throughout the range of adjustment of the back frame, and the seat frame member is adapted to contact with the ground at its rear end and also the forward part of the frame to which the back frame and the seat frame member are pivoted.
6. A construction of chair according to claim 1, wherein the bottoms of the said elongated recesses are curved to give an improved friction grip throughout the range of adjustment of the back frame, and the part of the frame of the Chair to which the back frame and seat frame member are pivoted comprises rigid side frames adapted to rest on the ground and to form the sole Support of the Chair.
