Description
- 1. Field of the Invention
- The present invention relates to a resistance or retarding device for a cycle exerciser, and more particularly to a magnetic resistance device for attaching to various cycle exercisers and including an arrangement for allowing the magnetic members to be heat dissipated and for increasing the working life of the magnetic resistance device.
- 2. Description of the Prior Art
- Typical cycle exercisers comprise a pair of cranks and foot pedals rotatably attached to a user supporting frame, and a flywheel also rotatably attached to the user supporting frame and coupled to the cranks for allowing the flywheel to be rotated or driven by the cranks and the foot pedals, and a magnetic resistance device attached to the user supporting frame and disposed close to the flywheel for applying a magnetic resisting or retarding force to the flywheel and for braking the flywheel.
- For example, U.S. Pat. No. 5,324,242 to Lo discloses one of the typical exercise apparatuses also comprising a flywheel rotatably attached to the user supporting frame and coupled to the cranks, and a magnet-type resistance generator attached to the user supporting frame for acting to the flywheel and for braking the flywheel, and including a number of magnets disposed on the outer periphery of a slide seat and disposed adjacent to the peripheral ring of a rotary plate and movable toward the rotary plate for generating a resisting or retarding force to retard or to resist the rotation of the rotary plate.
- However, the magnets are disposed on the outer periphery of the slide seat and may greatly increase the weight of the slide seat and may interfere the movement or the operation of the slide seat and the magnets. In addition, the whole rotary plate is required to be made of metal conductive materials or magnetic attractive materials which are heavy and may greatly increase the manufacturing cost for the typical exercise apparatuses.
- U.S. Pat. No. 5,711,404 to Lee discloses another typical magnetic adjustable loading device also comprising a magnetic plate and permanent magnets disposed on the magnetic plate and movable toward a rotor of a flywheel which is disposed on the outer peripheral portion of the magnetic plate and the permanent magnets for generating a resisting or retarding force to retard or to resist the rotation of the rotor of the flywheel.
- However, similarly, the magnets are disposed on the outer periphery of the magnetic plate and may greatly increase the weight of the magnetic plate and may interfere the movement or the operation of the magnetic plate and the magnets. In addition, the whole rotor of the flywheel is required to be made of metal conductive materials or magnetic attractive materials which are heavy and may greatly increase the manufacturing cost for the typical magnetic adjustable loading device.

- However, similarly, the magnets are disposed on the outer periphery of the mounting members and may greatly increase the weight of the mounting members and may interfere the movement or the operation of the mounting members and the magnets. In addition, the whole flywheel is also required to be made of metal conductive materials or magnetic attractive materials which are heavy and may greatly increase the manufacturing cost for the typical wheel-type resistance devices.

A fastener or adjustingmember 48 is threaded or attached to thebracket 46 and adjustable relative to thebracket 46 and thecarrier 40 for selectively engaging with the other end orsecond end 44 of the curved magneticattractive arm 41 and for adjusting the movement of the other end orsecond end 44 of the curved magneticattractive arm 41 relative to thebracket 46 and thecarrier 40 and themagnetic members 36 and for limiting or controlling the movement of the curved magneticattractive arm 41 relative to themagnetic members 36. - In operation, as shown in
FIGS. 3 and 4 , the other end orsecond end 44 of the curved magneticattractive arm 41 may be moved toward or away from themagnetic members 36 and theflywheel 30 with the handleactuatable cable 47 in order to adjust and to determine the spacing distance between the curved magneticattractive arm 41 and themagnetic members 36 and so as to adjust the magnetic resistive or retarding force applied to the flywheel and in order to suitably brake the flywheel with selected magnetic resistive or retarding forces. As shown inFIGS. 1 and 2 , alever 50 has a middle portion rotatably or pivotally attached to thecolumn 12 with apivot shaft 51, and anotherpulley 52 is rotatably attached to one end of thelever 50 and engaged with the belt orcoupling member 23, and aspring member 53 is attached to the other end of thelever 50 and coupled to thecolumn 12 of thebase 10 for actuating thepulley 52 to force and to stretch the belt orcoupling member 23. - Again, it is to be noted that the
flywheel 30 may be quickly formed or molded or manufactured with molding or mold-injection procedures or methods such that the manufacturing cost for theflywheel 30 may be greatly reduced and the quantity of the expensive metal material of theflywheel 30 may also be decreased. In addition, themagnetic members 36 are attached to the outer peripheral portion of theperipheral rim 33 in order to increase the weight and the momentum of the outer peripheral portion of theperipheral rim 33 of theflywheel 30, and themagnetic members 36 may be moved or rotated in concert with theperipheral rim 33 of theflywheel 30 such that the heat generated by themagnetic members 36 may be easily and quickly dissipated. Furthermore, themagnetic members 36 are not attached or fixed or secured to thearm 41 such that the weight of thearm 41 may be reduced and such that thearm 41 may be easily operated by the user. - Alternatively, as shown in
FIGS. 5-8 , illustrated is the other arrangement of theflywheel 301 of the magnetic resistance device, in which theflywheel 301 includes ahousing 310 having ahub 311 rotatably attached to thestationary base 10 or thecolumn 12 with thespindle 32 and having aperipheral rim 312, and includes twosemi-circular bars 331 disposed or engaged into thehousing 310 for supporting or attaching themagnetic members 36 to theperipheral rim 312 of theflywheel 301, acarrier 401 is also attached to thestationary base 10 or thecolumn 12 with thespindle 32, and two curved magnetic attractive members orarms 41 are pivotally attached to thecarrier 401 withpivot pins 43 and also disposed in correspondence to themagnetic members 36 and arranged to be moved toward or away from themagnetic members 36 with the handleactuatable cable 47. - An
aluminum arch 45 may also be attached or fixed or secured to the outer peripheral portion of the curved magneticattractive arm 41 and disposed or arranged between the curved magneticattractive arm 41 and themagnetic members 36 for spacing thearm 41 from themagnetic members 36 and for preventing thearm 41 from contacting with themagnetic members 36. Similarly, theflywheel 301 may be easily and quickly formed or molded or manufactured with molding or mold-injection procedures or methods such that the manufacturing cost for theflywheel 301 may be greatly reduced. In addition, themagnetic members 36 are attached to the outer peripheral portion of theperipheral rim 312 such that themagnetic members 36 may be moved or rotated in concert with theperipheral rim 312 of theflywheel 301 and such that the heat generated by themagnetic members 36 may be easily dissipated. - Accordingly, the magnetic resistance device in accordance with the present invention may be provided for attaching to various cycle exercisers and includes an arrangement for allowing the magnetic members to be heat dissipated and for increasing the working life of the magnetic resistance device.
- Although this invention has been described with a certain degree of particularity, it is to be understood that the present disclosure has been made by way of example only and that numerous changes in the detailed construction and the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
