1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bag machines and more particularly to machines for manufacturing bags of the so-called satchel or self-opening satchel type.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a bag machine of the character set forth wherein the successive bag stock lengths are cut from the stock on a straight, smooth line transversely of the direction of travel of the stock.
' Another object of the invention is to provide a bag machine as set forth having novel means forming an opening in the stock to permit the severed bag stock lengths to be gripped and carried into finishing mechanism of the machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine of the stated character having novel punch means associated therewith for forming a circular opening at predetermined intervals in the advancing stock in the machine.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a machine of the stated character having a transversely positioned straight cutting edge and novel punch means cooperating therewith in timed relation in order that the successive bag stock lengths will be cut from the fed stock on a transverse line coincident with the diameter of each of'the circular openings formed in the web. Other features and details of the invention are set forth hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1' is a diagrammatic View in perspective showing the'paper web traveling through a portion of the machineand the relation of the novel features of the invention with respect thereto;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section showing the punch means for forming the apertures in the traveling web;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in sec tion showing the cutter and the relation thereof to the traveling bag stock passing intermediate said cutter and an abutting roller; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view in perspective showing the forward end of a bag section, subsequent to the punching and cutting thereof in accordance with the present invention.
Heretofore, in the manufacture of bags of the present character, it has been necessary that the successive bag stock sections be severed from the advancing web in such a manner as to provide a segmental flap or tab on the bottom side for the purpose of providing a projection which may be gripped by a carrier or finger and carried into the finishing stages of the machine. The provision of this projecting segment or tab gave rise to a substantial waste of-material in the manufacture of a number of bags and also. made the handling thereof difficult in the finishing stages of the machine for forming the bottom of bags particularly of the satchel type where a substantial arcuate segment was cut from the back end of the stock length to provide for the projecting tab of the forward end of the succeeding bag length. y
By the present invention, the individual bag. lengths are cut from the advancing web on a straight line transverse with respect to the direction of travel of the web which eliminates difliculties encountered in the manufacture of bags heretofore as stated above. The present mannor of cutting the individual bag lengths on a straight line transversely to the direction of trave1 of the web, has been attempted in innumertioned in the machine that each cut made by the tool occurs coincident with the diameter of each opening formed in the web by said punch means. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, by cutting or punching the paper web in the manner's'et'forth above, the forward end of each individual bag length is provided with a semi-circular notch in the upper side thereof, which permits the usual finger to engage or grip the lower side of the bag section and advance it to the next stage of manufacture.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the present invention is shown as applied to the customary machine used in the manufacture of bags of the satchel type, wherein a web I is continuously fed from a roll of stock and passes inwardly of the machine about a group of rollers 2 then downwardly about a large roller and through a former (not shown) which forms a substantially fiat tubular bag stock as shown in Figs. 1 and i. The customary paste pot 5 is provided and a narrow disk roller 6, operating therein, contacts with one surface of the advancing Web I adjacent the edge thereof, to apply the necessary paste thereto for joining the overlapping edges of the tube 4.
In the present instance, as the web I is fed from a stock roll, it passes intermediate a pair of shafts 1 and 8 respectively. The web I rides on a roller 9 which is rigidly mounted on the shaft 8 and a circular cutting element I is rigidly mounted on the shaft 1, the said element II] being provided with a projecting annular beveled portion II terminating at its outer end in a cutting edge I2 which is arranged to engage the web I and cut a circular opening I3 therein against the abutting surface of the roller 9.
The shafts I and 8 respectively, are driven in geared relation with respect to each other by means of gears 2| and 2, as shown in Fig. 1 which are connected by means of other gears, (not shown) to the main drive mechanism of the machine.
A cylindrical bore I extends diametrically through the element II) and the shaft I as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A cylindrical plunger I4 is mounted in the bore I5 and extends normally beyond the cutting edge I2 of the annular cutter I I, the said plunger I4 being arranged to be depressed inwardly of the diametrical bore by contact with the roller 9 against the action of a spring IS. The spring I6 acts between the flanged base I! of the plunger I4 and a plug I8 threaded in the member ID. The outward movement of the H plunger I4 is restricted by the outer edge of the flange I! which engages the annular shoulder I9 formed at the inner end of the plunger bore I5.
When the cutting edge I2 engages the web I against the body of the roller 9 and forms the circular opening I3 therein, further rotation of the roller 9 and the element I0 in the directions of the arrows in Fig. 2 causes the spring I to actuate the plunger I4 outwardly of the bore I5 to discharge the circular cut-out from the web.
In the present instance a funnel or tube 20 is disposed in alignment with the cutting tool II directly above the roller 9 and is provided with a suction force therein for the purpose of aiding the plunger I4 in removing the cut-out from the web I, the said cut-out passing inwardly of the tube or funnel 20 by virtue of the suction and is discharged in a waste receptacle.
A straight edged cutting too-l 23 is mounted on a shaft 24 and arranged for rotation therewith, the said cutting edge residing in longitudinal alignment with said shaft I6 and transversely of the tubular bag stock 4. The tool 23 and shaft are suitably positioned in the machine and driven in timed relation with the feed of the web I so that successive individual lengths of the tubua shaft 26.
In order that the cutting of the individual bag lengths from the stock may be on a line substantially coincident with the diameter of an opening I3, it is necessary that the cutting means forming said openings be suitably positioned on the shaft 1 with respect to the web I and it is essential, furthermore, that the speed of operation of the cutting means I0 be in accurate timed relation with the speed of rotation of the straight edged cutter 23 and the speed of the traveling web of stock.
The formation of the semi-circular notch in the upper side of the tubular bag lengths permits the finger to grip the bottom side of the section and carry it into the final stages of the machine, thus making practical the straight edge cutting of the bag sections from the stock.
- It should be noted that the invention herein set forth may be applied to bag machines of numerous types and is not intended to be limited to paper bags but may be applicable to the manufacture of bags of cellophane and other similar material and any combinations of these materials as may be desired in the composition of the bag.
While I have set forth the embodiment of my invention for the purpose of description, it is intended that certain modifications'and changes may be incorporated therein within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In a machine, the combination of a roller adjacent one side of a traveling web, a shaft adjacent the other side of said web, the said shaft having a bore diametrically therethrough and being driven in timed relation with said roller, a cutter mounted on the shaft and arranged for rotation therewith, the said cutter having a diametrical bore therein, arranged in alignment with the bore in said shaft, a cutting edge adjacent the outer end of said bore and arranged to contact with the web against the body of the roller forming an aperture therein, a plunger in said bore arranged to project the cut-out portion defined by the cutting edge from the web, and suction means for carrying the cut out portion outwardly of the machine.
