This invention relates to spools.
I am aware that spools have heretofore been devised and that some of them have been placed upon the market, but, for the most part, these have been either too expensive to manufacture,
or, in some respect lacking in the qualities which are to be desired in a spool for the purpose contemplated by the present invention, namely, for cord, wire and similar materials.
It is an object of my present invention, which is an improvement over my Patents #1,600,196 and #1,923,510, to provide a spool that will overcome certain practical objections to, and defects in, the present types of spools now in use.
A special object of the invention is to provide a light, strong and durable spool which can be manufactured and sold at relatively low cost, as compared with spools now used, thus permitting the spool to be thrown away after the materials have been unwound therefrom, whereas spools now manufactured having the qualities desired, are too expensive, yet are used due to the lack up to the present time of a satisfactory spool which can be manufactured and sold at a lower cost, such as the spool herein described. y
Another object of the invention is to provide a spool ange, or head of laminated metallic and paper stock materials, the inner face and peripheral face of which is metal, and the outer face of paper stock, thus providing a relatively strong and stiff flange having a smooth inner face and having the peripheral edge portion of the paper stock material thereof reinforced to prevent injury thereto, or spreading thereof from any cause.
A further object of the invention is to provide the ends of the spool hub, which is wound paper stock, with metallic ferrules having walls engaging the inner, end and outer faces of the hub ends. v
A still further object of the invention is to provide the spool with. metallic bushing-like devices -for locking -'the anges of the spool against the ferrule ends of the hub, and, in providing the bushing-like devices with apertured cover plates. Other objects and advantages of the invention 'will be apparent as it is better understood from the following descriptiomwhich, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,l disclose a preferred and a modied embodiment of the invention.

In carrying out the aim of my present invention, I provide a spool having the qualities desired, which includes a tubular member, or hub l, Wound from suitable paper stock, and, which may be of any desired length and diameter, and to the ends of which are secured suitable metallic ferrules designated, generally, as A, to reinforce, or stiften the ends of the hub and against which metallic ends of the hub, laminated spool flanges, or heads are adapted to be held in axial relation thereto, as more fully described hereinafter.
The inner wall 2 of the ferrule on each end of the hub engages the inner face of the hub and serves as a sleeve of uniform diameter, the end Walls 3 engage and protect the end faces and edges of the hub, and the outer wall d engages and protects the outer face of the hub at the ends thereof. The two free edges of each ferrule bites into the hub material, thus preventing displacement of the ferrules on the ends of the hub l.
The laminated spool flanges, or heads, of which there are two, are designated, generally as B, and they are held in contact with the ferruled ends of the spool by suitable metallic bushing-like devices, more fully described hereinafter.
Each spool flange, or head is made up of a suitable paper stock lamina, or disk-like member 5 having a central opening 6, and a metallic lamina, facing or disk-like member 1 having a central opening 8 in axial alignment with the opening 6. The openings 6 and 8 are of like diameter and of substantially the same diameter as the inner diameter of the ferrules on the ends of the spoolhl'ib i. The .metallic lamina 'l serves as a facing forthe inner face of each paper stock lamina. and the outer edge portion of the metallic lamina 1 is formed over the outer peripheral' face and edges of the'paper stock lamina 5, as at l', serving as smooth reinforced edges therefor. and to prevent spreading of the outer 50 edge portion of the paper stock lamina 5, and injury thereto.
The axially aligned openings t and t in the spool flange members E and ll, respectively, when laminated, serve to provide a single opening for 35 each spool flange of such size as not to flt over the ends of the hub I, but to cause the metallic lamina 1 of each spool flange adjacent the central opening therein to engage the outer end walls of the ferrules A on the ends of the hub I.
'I'he laminated spool flanges, or heads are held. and locked in axial alignment against the ferrules on the ends of the hub I, by means of a pair of like metallic bushing-like devices, designated, generally as C.
Each bushing-like device consists ofl a cup shaped metallic member having the side wall 9, the inner or bottom wall I having a central spindle receiving opening II, and the outwardly extending flange I2, and, secured to the flange I2 of each bushing, which serves as a spool flange locking plug, is a suitable metallic cover plate I3 having its outer edge portion formed or shaped over the edge of the bushing flange I2, as at I3',
to lock it against displacement thereon. In the modified form of invention shown in Fig. `5,' the cover plate I3 is omitted and the flange I2 directly engages the outer wall of the paper stock lamina 6 of the spool flange for clamping the spool flange between the bushing flange and the ferrule at each end of the spool hub, and, in this instance, the paper stock lamina 6 of each spool flange is provided .with a drive pin receiving opening I4 so that the spool can be rotated for winding material thereon and unwinding material therefrom.
Each cover plate I3, in the preferred form of the invention, is provided with a central opening I5 in axial alignment with the opening II in the inner wall of the bushing and it is also provided with one, or more openings I 6 surrounding the central opening I5 adapted to receive a driving pin, or pins for rotating `the spool when winding material thereon and unwinding material therefrom. In the preferred form of invention, the turned over, or folded edge of the cover plate I3 engages the outer face of the paper stock lamina 6 of each spool flange for clamping a spool flange between the ferrule on the end of the hub I and said turned over edge portion of the cover plate I3.
It will be observed that the wall II) of the bushing-like devices C are inserted through the axially aligned openings 5 and 8 of each spool flange lamina 5 and 1, and into telescopic frictional engagement with the inner wall 2 of each ferrule A on the ends of the hub I by forcing, or pressing the bushing-like devices into home position under pressure for holding and locking the spool flanges between the outer walls of the hub ferrules and the flanges on the bushing-like devices C.
In the modified form of spool flange shown in Fig. 6, it will be observed that the outside face of the spool flange is faced with a metal disc 'I' instead of the inside face thereof, as shown at I in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. In either instance, the edge of the metal facing is rolled over the edge of the paper stock flange member 5.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that I have provided a spool construction having the qualities desired to render it sturdy, light in weight, not easily injured, and, capable of being manufactured within a price range that will warrant it being thrown away after the material wound thereon has been unwound therefrom.
The many advantages of the hereindescribed spool construction will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains'.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed, but it is to be understood that I do not desire to restrict, or limit myself to the very details of the construction shown and described, which is merely illustrative, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention may be made without conflicting or departing from the spirit of the invention within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. 'I'he combination, in a spool, of an all paper stock hub having metallic ferrules secured on each end thereof, with a pair of laminated metallic and paper stock spool flanges having central openings adapted to engage the ferruled ends of the hub, cup-shaped'bushing-like devices having central openings in their inner walls and insertable through the flange openings and having frictional connection with the aforesaid ferrules, outwardly extending flanges on the bushings, cover members having their edge portions formed over the bushing flanges and engaging the spool flanges, said cover members having central openings in axial alignment with the openings in the inner walls of the bushings and having a plurality of smaller openings surrounding the central openings in the bushing cover members.
2. A spool provided with a hub, ferrules on the ends of the hub, spool flanges for the ends of the hub, said flanges having central openings, bushings insertable into the flange openings and into the bore of the hub, flanges on the bushings between which and the ferrules on the ends of the hub the spool flanges are clamped against displacement, and apertured cover plates on the outer ends of the bushings.

ferrule on each end of the spindle, a pair of laminated metallic and cardboard end members having central openings serving as flanges for the ends of the spindle, a pair of bushings having telescopic connection with the ends of the spindle and insertable through the openings in the end members for locking the end members against the ferrules on the ends of the spindle, a flange on each bushing, a disk secured to the flange of each bushing, each disk having a central open.- ing in axial alignment with its respective bushing and the disk on each bushing having a plurality of openings surrounding the central opening thereof.
4. In a spool, a paper stock tubular hub, a laminated metallic and paper stock flange at each end of the hub, said flanges and hub having substantially equal bores, a bushing holding each laminated flange against its respective end of the hub, said bushings each comprising an inner end wall having a central opening of less diameter than the bore of the hub, a longitudinal wall en'- gaging the bores of the hub and flanges and an outwardly extending flange, a cap having an opening in axial alignment with the inner wall openfacings having substantially vequal bores, bushings having inner walls provided with openings of less diameter than said bores, flanges on the bushings, cover plates on the bushings having central openings in axial alignment with the inner walls of the bushings, said cover plates having their peripheral edge portions folded over the bushing flanges and engaging the outer faces of the paper stock flanges and said cover plates having a plurality of openings surrounding the central opening therein.
6. A spool having, in combination, a cylindrical paper stockhub, flanges at the ends of said hub,`
ferrules on the ends of said hub serving to provide metal ends for the hub, said flanged ends each consisting of laminated metal and paper stock disks, the edge portions of each metal disk being formed over the peripheral edge of each paper stock disk, a flanged metallic cup-shaped bushing carried by the ends of the hub for locking the flanged ends against the ends of the hub and an apertured cover plate secured to the outer ends of the cup-shaped bushings.
7. In combination with a paper stock cylindrical hub, of a flange at each end of the hub, said flanges each embodying anv inner metallic disk and an outer paper stock disk, the paper stock disks being held in fixed relation to the metal disks by curled over edges of the metallic disks, metallic bushings on the ends of the hub vlocking bushings.
8. A spool comprising a cylindrical all paper hub, ferrules on the ends of the hub serving to provide metal linings of uniform diameter, flanges at the ends of the hub, said anges including laminated metal and paper stock disks, the metal disks engaging the outer ends of the ferrules, the peripheral edge portions of the metal disks being curled over the peripheral edges of the paper stock disks, the flanged ends having central openings adapted for axial alignment with the hub, cupshaped bushings insertable through the central opening in the flanges and frictionally insertable into the lined ends of the hub, flanges on the bushings, cover disks secured to the cup-shaped bushings and having central openings in axial alignment with openings in the bottom walls of the cup-shaped bushings, and said -cover plates having a plurality of openings surrounding the central openings therein.
9. In a spool, in combination. a paper tube, a
metallic ferrule secured to each end of the tube and engaging the inner, end and outer faces of the `tube and with the edges thereof biting into the tube material to prevent displacement of the ferrules on the ends of the tube, laminated combination cardboard and metal flanges having registered central openings for the ends of the tube, cup-shaped metallic members insertable through the central openings of the flanges for frictional engagement with the ferrules on the ends of the tube, an outwardly extending flange on the outer end of each cup-shaped metallic member adapted to engage the marginal Aedge portion of the outer face of each flange, and a metallic disk having a central opening and a plurality of smaller surrounding openings secured to the outwardly extending flange on each cup-shaped metallic member.
