Description

June 25, 1935. c. F. ROBER 2,005,113
APPARATUS FOR APPLYING A CIGAR WRAPPER TO A BUNCH Filed Dec. 21, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet l C. F. ROBER June 25, 1935.
APPARATUS FOR APPLYING A CIGAR WRAPPERTO A BUNCH 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Dec. 21, 1952 Patented June 25, 1935 UNITED S ATES? PATENT OFFICE Application December 21, 1932; Serial -No. '648,279 In Germany February 27, 1932 6 Claims (order-gas) this end in view it has already been contemplated to form the rollers of a pluralityof parts, for instance a cylindrical main part and two end parts of conical or like formation, the principal axes of which were arranged at an angle to the axis of the middle, cylindrical part.
It has been found impossible to produce a satis factory cigar with the nests of bunch rollers-hitherto known, particularly as the wrapper cannot be applied to the shaped ends of thebunch, by
mechanical means, as tightly and as efliciently as by hand; This'is due to the fact that all of the shaped bunch rollers hitherto known are to a certain extent rigid and in any case are unable to conform sufficiently to the shape of the bunch.
In contrast to the above, the present invention consists in that for the application of the wrapper to the pointed or similarly shaped end of the bunch, a pair of jaws separate from the bunch rollers and shaped to correspond to the ends of the cigars, is provided, which applies a flexible pressure and grips the end of the bunch while pressing on the wrapper.
In order that the shape of the cigar tip may be followed with the greatest exactitude, each pair of jaws is preferably composed of separate, independently flexible laminations.
One form of construction of the invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a partial plan.
Fig. 4 shows a part of the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 1 when the parts are in another position.
Figs. 5 and 5 are detailed views.
The nest of rollers, of known type, is formed of lower rollers I and upper rollers 2. The axles l' of the lower bunch rollers are mounted in the machine frame and the bunch rollers 2 are mounted in bearings 3, which are pivotally mounted on the axle I, and each opposite pair of which is held together by a rod 4. The bunch rollers are driven by the main driving shaft 5 which is connected by gear wheels 6 and 1 with an axle 8 mounted in the machine frame. The spur wheel I is mounted on the same axle as a spur wheel 9 with which gear wheels I of the 'lower bunch rollers engage. By means of inter mediate wheels [0, the gear wheels I" are connected with gear wheels 2" which are mounted on the axles 2' of the upper bunch rollers 2. On the machine frame G is mounted a bearing arm I lwhich carriesa pivot 12 for a pair of jaws l3, l3 which -areshape'd in conformity with the end of the cigaryand the ends l3 of the said jaws overlapping-each-other hinge-wise. At 13" a spring [4 engages thelower limbs of the pair of jaws l3 and'tends to keep them in the position shown in Fig. =1,'whereinthejaws are in the closed position and the space between the jaws corresponds to thetip of the cigar to be covered with the wrapper. Between the limbs 13' is arranged a roller l5, which is mounted on a double-armed lever l6. Thedouble-armedlever is mounted on the frame atJ-I 'I -and,.underthe tension of a spring 18, is drawn witha roller l9, also mounted on the lever l6, against a cam 20 which is mounted on the main axle. It is a known fact that the upper bunch rollers 2 must be swung apart while the bunch is being inserted in the bunch nest. For this purpose the bearing arms 3 are provided with levers with which links 22 engage at 2|, these links being connected to a lever 24 by a common pin 23. The lever 24 is mounted on the machine frame at 25, and under the tension of a spring 26 is brought, with a roller 21 mounted thereon, into contact with a cam 28 which is mounted on the main shaft.
The mode of operation of the apparatus is as follows:--
As soon as a cigar has been prepared in the nest of rollers, the link mechanism 2| to 24 is moved in such manner that the upper bunch rollers 2 assume the position shown in Fig. 4. At the same time, the cam 20 causes the lever IE to swing about the pivot l'l against the tension of the spring IS in such manner that the roller I5 is moved downwards and the limbs l3 are moved apart, so that the jaws l3 assume the position shown in Fig. 4. Thereupon the finished cigar can be removed from the nest of rollers and a new bunch W inserted. At the same time the front end of the wrapper D is placed in the position indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. Then the cam 20 swings the lever l6 into the position shown in Fig. 1, so that the jaws I3, under the tension of the spring M can be placed around the cigar end, at the same time applying the wrapper. After the bunch rollers 2 have been brought into the operative position by the cam 28, the bunch is set in rotation between the jaws l3 in a manner similar to the application of the wrapper between the fingers of the cigar maker. Thus in known manner, the wrapper carrier (not shown in the drawings) follows the continuous helical winding of the wrapper about the bunch.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 1-4, two rigid jaws are used. It is, however, also possible, as shown in Fig. 5, for the jaws to be subdivided into laminations, each pair of laminations being associated with a spring which causes the individual laminations to be pressed against the bunch. Thus, in this arrangement it is not necessary for a special pair of jaws to be arranged for each special shape of cigar, as the sub-division into separate laminations renders itpossible for the individual pairs of laminations to conform to the pointed shape of the cigar bunch. It is obvious that in the last-mentioned type of construction the opening of the separate pairs of laminations can be effected by a single control roller l5. r
Having thus described the nature of the said invention and the best means I know oi. carrying the same into practical efiect, I claim: I
1:. An apparatus-for applying a cigar wrapper to a bunch comprising bunch rollers, a Dairof pivoted jaws located adjacent one end of said bunch rollers and flexible means-normally urging said jaws together to exert a flexible pressure to hold an end of the wrapper to the end of said bunch to secure a correct application of said wrapper to said. bunch at the start of the wrapping operation, V p
2. An apparatus for applying a. cigar'wrapper to a bunch comprising bunch rollers, a series of pivoted jaws located at one end of said bunch rollers and flexible means normally urgingsaid jaws to closed position to secure an end of said wrapper to the end of said bunchto secure a correct application of said wrapper to said bunch at the start of the wrapping operation.
3. An apparatus for applying a cigar wrapper to a bunch comprising bunch rollers, a pair of laminated jaws located adjacent said bunch rollers, flexible means for normally urging the laminations of said jaws to closed position to apply an end of said wrapper to the end of said bunch to secure a correct application of said wrapper to said bunch at the start of the wrapping operation.
4. An apparatus for applying a cigar Wrapper to a bunch comprising bunch rollers, pivoted jaws located adjacent said bunch rollers, flexible means for normally holding said jaws in closed position and a cam operated roller for opening said jaws to allow of the insertion of the end of a wrapper.
5. An apparatus for applying a cigar wrapper to a bunch comprising fixed rotating lower bunch rollers, pivoted upper bunch rollers for cooperating with said lower rollers, cam means for moving said upper rollers to the side of said lower rollers to allow of the insertion of a bunch, pivoted jaws located adjacent said bunch rollers, flexible means normally holding said jaws in closed position and means for opening said jaws at approximately the same time as said upper rollers are moved to the side of said lower rollers.
6. An apparatus for applying a cigar wrapper to a bunch comprising bunch rollers, a pair of laminated jaws located adjacent said bunch rollers, flexible means for urging normally individual laminations to closed position and a common means for simultaneously opening all of said laminations.
