3 Claims.
This invention relates to a pulling device and has as its object the provision of an eflicient hydraulic puller adapted for use in the pulling of gears, wheels, pulleys and the like.
The invention together with its numerous objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherem:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a puller embodying the features of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the puller.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view through the cylinder and associated parts of the puller.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of a slightly modified form of the invention and Figure 5 is a plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that the puller comprises a cylinder or body member it provided with a bore ii in which is mounted for reciprocation a plunger 92. At one end the plunger 52 operates through a packing structure which includes a packing ring it of suitable fibrous material, a packing ring M preferably formed of brass, a packing ring 55 formed of any suitable material and a packing nut it that is threaded into the open end of the bore ii of the cylinder l8.
At its rear end the body or cylinder i0 is suitably iormed to provide a fluid chamber ii adapted to contain, in the present instance oil. At said rear end the body it! is also provided with an end plate It that forms a closure for the chamber ii and is provided with a plug extension ii! that is accommodated within the body Ill as clearly shown in Figure 3 and is suitably formed to provide a pump chamber that is connected with, and is in communication with the chamber ll through the medium of a suitably provided passage 2l. At its discharge end the pump chamber 20 opens into the bore ii of the'cylinder and is equipped with an outwardly opening spring pressed ball valve structure 22. At its intake end the passage 21 is provided with an inwardly opening ball check valve structure 23.
Mounted for reciprocation within the pump chamber 20 is a pump-piston 24 and this piston 24 is adapted to be reciprocatd by hand through the medium of a lever 25 pivotally connected with the outer end of the piston or plunger 24 as at 26, and also pivotally connected at one end to a bracket arm 21 projecting from the end or cap plate l8.
From the above description it will be apparent that the reciprocation oi the pump plunger 24 will cause the oil in the chamber 21 to be pumped therefrom through the passage 2| into the pump chamber 20 and from the pump chamber into the bore I l 01' the body or cylinder Ill behind the ram 5 or plunger l2 for projecting the latter to engage with the shaft or other work with which the gear, pulley or the like to be pulled or removed is associated.
For relieving pressure behind the ram l2 the 10 bore ii and the chamber l! are in communication and connected through the medium of a suitably located and formed passage 28 controlled by a needle valve 29 operable exteriorly of the body or cylinder i0. 5
Adjacent its forward end the body Iii is provided with a circumferentially extending groove 30 that is adapted to loosely receive a two part ring 55 The parts of the ring at their meeting ends are provided with apertured lugs to ac- 20 commodate securing bolts or the like 32. Each part or section of the ring is also provided with a lug 33.
For use with the puller and as shown in Figures 1 and 2 there is provided a pair of work engag- 5 ing jaw members 34, and at one end the jaw members are'bifurcated or otherwise formed as at 35 for pivotal engagement with the lugs 33 through the medium of rivets or other suitable means 36.
In the form ofthe invention shown in Figures 4 and 5 extension means are provided and the. same consists of arms 31 that at one end are adapted to be pivoted to the lugs 33' of the ring 3i as at 38. At their free ends the arms 31 35 are connected by a ring 39 being pivoted to lugs provided at diametrically opposite sides of the ring 39 as at 46.
In this form of the invention there is also provided a pair of jaw members each of which con- 40 I sists of a pair of sides 4i pivotally connected to the ring 39 by rivets or the like 42. Connecting the free ends of the sides 4| is a substantially longitudinally curved or ,U'-shaped work engaging member 43. will be especially adapted for pulling or removing from the shaft or axle thereof gears, pulley wheels and the like which set too far in from the end of its axle or shaft as would not permit the use of the device when the same employs merely the jaws 34 shown in Figure 1, and also for pulling or removing gears and analogous wheels of relatively small diameter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
This last form of the invention 45 bers pivotally connected at one endto the ring at I diametrically opposite sides thereof, a ring connecting the free ends of the arm members, and a pair of cooperating jaw members pivotally connected at one end with the last named ring;
2. A puller for gears, pulleys and analogous wheels comprising a cylinder, a ram mounted for reciprocation within the cylinder, pump means provided in one end of the cylinder for forcing the fluid through the cylinder behind the ram to cause relative movement of the ram and cylinder; said .cylinder being provided with an external groove, a ring engaging in the groove, arm members pivotally connected at one end to the ring at diametrically opposite sides thereof, a ring connecting the free ends of the arm members, and a pair of cooperating jawmembers plvotally connected at one end with the last named ring, each of said jaw members including a pair of sides and a work engaging longitudinally curved member connecting said sides at one end.
3. A puller for gears and analogous wheels comprising a two-diameter cylinder, a ram mounted for reciprocation within the cylinder and projectible from the cylinder at the small diameter of the cylinder, pump means provided in the large diameter of the cylinder for forcing the fluid through the cylinder behind the ram to cause relative movement of the ram and cylinder, the small diameter of the cylinder being provided with a circumferentially extending external groove, a two-part ring loosely engaging in the groove,- and a device for engaging the gear or analogous wheel to be pulled, said device including members disposed at opposite sides of the cylinder and pivoted at one end to the parts of said ring.
