J. E. 'BROOME BUSK FASTENING MEANS FOR CORSETS AND SIMILAR GARMENTS Filed Sept. 18, 1954 Fig.1.
lllllllllllllllllllllIlllllllllnlllllulll|lllllllll lllllll ,Z/weniwn- Patented Ma, 21, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BUSK FASTENING MEANS FOR CORSETS AND SIMILAR GAR-MENTS John Edward Broome, Market Harborough, Leicester, England, assignor to Ormond James Taylor, Dundee, Scotland 7 Application September 18, 1934, Serial No. 744,590
I In Great Britain October 6, 1933 2 Claims. (01.. 2'-25 7) A corset according to the invention has studs projecting inwardly from one busk and cooperative slotted tabs projecting laterally from the 10 other busk of the pair, said other bus k being ad-= ditionally provided with a laterally projecting tab or the like, adapted, when the corset is fastened, to project over the outer face of the first busk, and an internal flap, which mayin- 16 corporate an additional busk, secured to the garment material behind the tab-carrying busk.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. l is a fragmentary front view of a corset or like garment shown unfastened and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the corset fastened.
As illustrated, a busk I, encased in the material 2 at one margin of the corset, is provided with inwardly projecting spaced studs 3, the stem or barrel parts of which may be shorter than the corresponding parts of the outwardly projecting studs heretofore used. Another busk 4, encased in the material 2' at the other margin of the corset, is provided with slotted tabs 5 spaced vertically apart in correspondencewith the vertical spacing of the. studs 3. An additional tab 6, or a hook or loop, preferably atab of hook shape as shown, is secured to the busk 4.
Behind the busk 4 a flap 8, which may incorporate an additional busk, is secured to the material 2' of the corset. When the corset is fastened the said flap is within or behind the inwardly projecting studs 3 and thus serves to protect the wearer from discomfort from said studs.
To fasten the corset, the edges [are brought close together, the studs 3 are engaged in the keyhole slots of the tabs 5 and the tab 6 is brought to the outer side of the 'busk I, as shown by Fig. 2.
The hook and eye connection 9 at the lower part of the corset is then engaged. The hook and eye may, if desired, be located on the inner face of the corset so as to be concealed.
Besides acting to lock the interengaged busks i and 4, the tab 6 may serve for engagement with a tab or other fitting pertaining to a brassiere 5 or the like to retain the latter in position on the figure. l The flap 8 may be provided with an undersurface of plush or similar soft material to prevent discomfort to the wearer on account of the studs 10 3 and tabs 4 being on the inside of the fastened corset.
The flap 8 may be extended downwards to a position below the hook-and-eye fastening 9 so as to prevent contact of undergarments by the 15 hook-and-eye fastening.
It will be understood that with the use of the described fastening means the objectionable appearance of studs and tabs projecting against the inner face of a tight'fitting garment or a garment of thin or fllmsy material is obviated.
I claim:.- 7

A corset having a pair of marginal busks, studs projecting inwardly from one busk, cooperative slotted tabs projecting laterally from the other busk of the pair, a tab projecting laterally from said other busk and so arranged, when the garment is fastened, as to project over the face of the said first-mentioned busk, and an internal flap secured to the corset behind said second mentioned busk and so arranged as tobe Within or behind the inwardly projecting studs when the garment is fastened, said flap thus serving to protect the wearer from discomfort from said studs. n
2. A corset having a. pair of marginal busks, studs projecting inwardly from one busk, cooperative slotted tabs projectinglaterally from the other busk of the pair, and an internal flap secured to the corset behind said second mentioned busk and so arranged as to be within or behind said inwardly projecting studs when the garment is fastened, said flap thus serving to protect the wearer from discomfort from said in-' wardly projecting studs. 45
