subsequently by the shoulders. on the. knife to prevent irregularities; As illustrated, the cutting is accomplished by-means carried by the feed point, so that the extending shoulders act to render more efiective the operation of the feed point in feeding the work by preventing the formation of irregular projections on the surface of the work By the provision of lateral shoulderson the feed point, not only is the feeding movement itself improved, but the channelling knife being attached to the feed point to cut during movement of the feed point towards the work, does not cause any displacement of the work in the line of feed and maintains the surfaces at the sides of the channel substantially smooth and undisturbed.
Other features of the invention consist in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts, the advantages of which will be obvious tothose skilled in the art from the following description.

The feeding movements of the feed; point'are 'produced'by swinging the carrier 20" between the needle and the presser foot, and are so adjusted that the needle will penetrate the workv at points coinciding with indentations formed by the feed point, so that slight variations in the depth to which the feed point penetrates causes no difiiculty in the finished seam.
According to the present invention the feed point, indicated at 26, of the present machine is formed with a work channelling knife edge 28 acting in the direction of feed directly behind the presser foot so that the presser foot serves to smooth the surface of the work to'a certain extent before the channelling knife forms its groove. To prevent any variation in the depth to which the feed point and channelling knife may penetrate, the point is provided with laterally extending shoulder portions 30 having flat under surfaces to engage and compress the work at either side of the channelling knife 28. The knife 28 is formed with its cutting edge extending horizontally to cut the workduring the downward movement of the feed point, the feeding movement taking place after the shoulders 30 have been seated on the work surface. To insure proper feeding action, a downwardly extending tip 32 may be formed at the forward end of the knife portion 28. The shoulders 30 on the feed point not only cause the knife to form a groove of uniform depth but also act to compact the material operated upon firmly about the tip 32 so that during the feeding movement, a better grip on the work will be maintained. With the arrangement described, the type of machine illustrated in'the Ashworth patent referred to may be equipped with a channelling knife with no additional mechanical changes aside from possibly a slight adjustment to com pensate for the different reaction on thefeed.
