The hollow posts I8 are preferably formed by v drilling an eccentrically located vertical Vhole slightly larger in diameter than the solid posts I 1 through a round blank of theproper length, flattening the remaining thickfwall of the post' to form a at side of the said post I8 as shown in Fig. l, and shouldering the same to form a hollow rivet at the bottom thereof'as hereinbeforede- A post I'I thereby completing the positive double de- Now referring to Fig. 6, each hollowjpost I8 is provided with a horizontally'disposed round hole scribed.

V.The rivet 24 is formed with a shoulderbeneath the head 25 to abut against the1shoulder23 formed in thehollow post I8. The rivethead,
25 is of slightly less diameterthanfthe hole 2| to permit assembly and the free rotation of the rivet 24. The top ofthe rivet head 25 isground before hardening to form a concaved groove having substantiallythe same radius as the vertical hole in the hollow post I 8. The shank of the rivet 24 is long enough to extend through the hole 22 in the hollow post I8, receive a spring washer V25, be flattened on two: sides to provide vakey. 29
to engage an operating lever .30, and form a head to retain the said rivet, spring washer and operating lever in the desired position in relation to the said hollow post I8. i f f tiondescribed herein, in which case holes 2| and 22 ofthe hollow post I8 would be formed asy one tapered hole.
Theoperating lever 30 is provided with a lug 3| to abut againstthe hollow'post I8 when l the conas high as desired within the useful limits of the i ,telescoping engagement of the solid grooved and hollow posts'IIA and I8 of the locking devices.
The operating lever 30 is moved to the disen-V gaged position shown. in Fig.` 2, thesolid posts I4 andmII are then brought in telescopic engagement with the hollow posts I5 and 8 respectively, the leaf-engaging members III and I are then preferably pressed into compressed relationship to eachother thereby engaging the punched ller sheets I6 as in Fig. 3 and the operating lever 3|] is moved to the engaged position as shown in Fig. 3 to lock the leaf-engaging members I0 and II in the desired relation to each other.
'Ihe positive locking means of engagement bef tween the solid grooved and hollow posts I'IV and I8 is accomplished by thepreferably double detent engagement therebetween as illustrated in Figs; 4, 5 and'?. Fig. 4 shows thev solid grooved :apd hollowposts ,I'IVA and I8 in unlocked `vrelation The rivet 24 may be tapered instead ofshoul-v dered without departing from the broad invento each other with the operating lever 3U in a dis'- engaged position and the grooved head of the rivet 24 coincident with the inner surface of the hollow post I8. When the operating lever 30 is moved toward its'engaged position it causes the lgrooved head 25 of the rivet 24 to register with the nearest peripheral grooves in the solid grooved tent typelocking engagement between the solid Ygrooved and hollow posts II and I8.
for securing the said'posts to the leaf-engaging member I8. The said solid posts IID are lmurled in such amanner that the high portions of the grooved head 25 of the rivet 24 will register with the knurling in the solid posts Il'llwhen the said rivet is turned into its engaged position by the operating lever 30. l
It is readily observed vthat the above described binderis simple to operate, sturdy in construction and economical to manufacture, and provides anabsolutely positive means for maintaining the leaf-engaging members in any desired relation to each other. The grooves in solid postsI'I or-thel knurling 0f solid posts I'I0 may be 0f a wide range of detail to permit the high portions of the grooved head 25 of the rivet 24 to register there-- with. Also, a single detent type lockingengage- '40 i ment may be used by forming the rivetvhead 25 of the rivet 24'inthe shape of an L insteadgof thez.
