BRICK FACING SUPPORT Filed NOV. 2l, 1954 Patented May 7, 1935 Stjepan Sarar, Detroit, Mich.
Application November 21, 1934, Serial No. 754,006
5 Claims.
The present invention pertains to a novel wall construction and has as its primary object to provide permanent means which may be constructed on an existing Wall 'for supporting a brick veneer relative to the wall, the invention thus providing means whereby the walls of frame buildings may readily be covered with a brick wall or veneer. More specifically, the invention aims to provide for the construction of va concrete ledge on an existing wall and means for bonding the concrete ledge to the Wall in order that the ledge shall be provided with the mechanical strength necessary to support the brick Wall, permanently and without sagging. This same general purpose has heretofore been accomplished by providing a metallic support or ledge for the brick Veneer, and the present invention comprises an improvement over such means in that it is more permanent inasmuch as it is not subject to oxidation and it provides a more equal distributionA of the Weight of the brick veneer over the existing wall which supports the same. l
With the above and other ends in view the invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly-pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal cross section of a wall illustrating the present invention thereon;
Figs. 2 and 3 are cross sections taken on the lines 2-2 and 3 3 respectively of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a cross section illustrating the assembly of a form prior .to construction of the present ledge.
Like characters of reference are employed throughout to designate corresponding parts.
In the drawing there is illustrated a Wall formed of blocks l secured together by mortar 2. This illustration is intended to exemplify a conventional wall construction such as usually comprises the foundation for a frame building and it Will be understood that various other types Vof building blocks may be used or the foundation Wall might be formed of bricks or of solid concrete. In. any given layer blocks are removed so as to provide spaced apart openings 3, the blocks being removed by chisels or pneumatic drills. In the event that the wall is formed of solid concrete the openings 2 will be formed in the same plane in spaced apart relation around the Wall and thef upper and lower surfaces will be gouged out as indicated by the numeral 4 in Fig. 4.
The opening through the inside surface of the wall is closed by a form member 5 which also serves to support a slab 6 and outside of the Wall is supported a form member 1 which runs entirely around theV wall and which communicates with the several openings 3. Concrete is then poured in the form 'l and is tamped into the openings 3. It is preferable that reinforcing means be provided for the concrete and the reinforcing means is'illustrated as comprising rods 8 running entirely around the wall and having ties 9 extending into the openings 3.
After the concrete has become set there is provided a ledgeV I running entirely around the building and bonded to the Wall by the concrete Il in the openings 3. As illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 the ledge I0 has a horizontal top surface which provides a support for a veneer vWall of bricks l2, and the lower surface is sloped so as to eliminate any possible uplight of the ledge as a result of freezing Water and soil conditions.
Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described it will be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims Without Y departing from the spirit of the invention, and such changes are contemplated.
What I claim is:
' 1. The combination with a previously formed Wall of cellular nature having a horizontal series of openings therein, of a concrete ledge extending outwardly along the outside surface of said Wall, said ledge having integral projecting portions extending into said openings and uniting said ledge With said wall, reinforcing elements imbedded Within the said projecting portions, reinforcing elements imbedded Within said ledge, vandV means uniting the reinforcing elements in the ledge with the reinforcingelements in the projecting portions. C
2. The combination with a previously formed Wall having a. horizontal series of openings extending therethrough, of a concrete ledge extending outwardly of the wall along one surfaceV thereof in line With said openings, projecting portions integral with said ledge and extending into said openings and uniting said ledge with said Wall, and slabs imbedded in said projecting portions toY close the ends of the openings at the other side of said Wall.
3. The combination with a Wall formed of hollow blocks of cellular nature and having a horizontal series of openings therein, of a concrete ledge extending along the outside surface of said Wall, and integral projecting portions on said ledge extending into said openings and uniting said ledge with said wall, said projecting portions -ledge having integral concrete brackets projecting therefrom,v metallic reinforcing means in said brackets, metallic reinforcing means in said ledge, means uniting the reinforcing means inA the brackets with the reinforcing means in the ledge, and said walls having openings therein formed in a horizontal series around said buildingand receiving said brackets tounite said ledge, with said walls.
5. The combination with a building having vertical Walls of cellular nature, of a concrete ledge extending continuously around the outside surface of said Walls in a horizontal plane, said ledge having integral concrete brackets projecting therefrom, metallic reinforcing means in said brackets, metallic reinforcing means in said ledge, means uniting Vthe reinforcing means in the brackets with the reinforcing means in the ledge,
and said walls having openings therein formed 10 in a horizontal series around said building and receiving said brackets to unite said ledge with .said walls, said ledge having its top surface extending at a right angle to the surfaces of said Walls and its bottom surface sloped at an acute 15 angle relative to the surfaces of the Walls.
