1 Claim.
The object of the invention is to provide an curling irons and other electrical appliances for hand ductor cord. is ordinarily subjected to twisting, movement will be provided generally to provide a swivel electric plug which is of simple form and therefore susceptible of cheap manufacture.
With this object in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing but to which cm- In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a plug constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the base portion. t Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the cap porion.
Figure 4 is a central vertical sectional view, enlarged.
Consisting of the base and cap portions l and H, the former, which is made of any suitable ingaged with the sleeve portion l2 by contact with the inturned flange portion l5 of the latter, this inturned flange portion resting in a recessed part of the lower face of the base portion of the plug, so that the sleeve may be retained on the use in which the coningly engages the web of a forked clip 20, the arms of which have a spring tendency towards each otherand which at intermediate points in their length are bent inwardly as indicated at 2| to provide elements forengagement with the center contact member of the cap portion I I.
In the upper face of the base portion Hi, there is formed a channel in which is seated a channelshaped conductor strip 22 and this channelshaped conductor strip is electrically connected with the sleeve l2 by reason of the strip I4 which is engaged with the under face of the channelshaped conductor, as shown at 23.
The contacts in the cap portion H consist of members to engage the forked clip '20 and the channel-shaped conductor 22. The one comprises a plate 24 provided with binding post 25 and with a stud 26, the binding post 25 being for connection with one of the conductors 21 and the stud 26 being for engagement with the channel-shaped conductor 22. The other contact of the cap consists of a plate 28, provided with a binding post 29 for connection to the other conductor 30. The plate 28 is bent as indicated at 3| to provide a pendent stem which terminates in a knob 32 directly above which is formed a reduced cylindrical neck portion 33. In attaching the cap II to the base portion, the knob enters the central recess in the latter be- The stem 3| is of sufficient length to permit the knob passing the bends 2| to bring them adjacent the neck portion '33, so that they bear on the rear end of the knob and thus have a tendency to pull the cap towards the base portion and thus bring the lug or post 26 into firm contact with the bottom or web portion of the channel conductor member 22.
To maintain axial alignment of the base and cap portion, the latter is interiorly enlarged at the lower end and the former exteriorly reduced at the upper end, so that an overlapping flange 34 is provided on the cap which surrounds the peripherally reduced portion of the base.
It will be noted 01 course that the construction provides for angular or turning movement of the cap portion on the base with electric conductivity always maintained since the method of engagement of the arms of the spring clip 20 insures an axial pulling movement on the cap to maintain the lug in contact with the conductor channel 2 2. The construction also provides for the ready separation of the cap from the base portion by an axial pull impartedto the former.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
An electric swivel plug comprising base and cap portions of which the former is provided with a recess and with a forked spring clip disposed in the same, the base portion having a center contact electrically connected to said clip for engagement with the corresponding contact of a receptacle, the cap having a center contact engageable between the arms of the spring clip of the base and the latter having a channel formed in its upper end and an annular contact in said channel and arranged concentrically of the recess in said base, said annular contact being electrically connected to a peripheral contact and being in the form of a channel with its flat face lying in a plane transverse oi the base but perpendicular to the axis thereof, the cap having an oil-center contact arranged with its axis parallel to the axis of the base and bearing on the face of said annular contact, the arms of the forked spring clip being provided with inwardly directed bends at intermediate points in their lengths and the center contact of the cap comprising a knob of greater diameter than the space between said bends and having a contracted neck portion to provide a clearance space for said bends to permit them to engage directly behind the body portion of the knob and create an axial pull on the cap to maintain the contact of the latter in constant yielding engagement with the annular contact.
