, The present invention relates to a method-and apparatus for producingcigars 'of a type tent, as the operator or operators must have sumcient time for serving the machine in a satisfactory manner.
According tothis invention the output is increased in a very simple way, so that the machine is able to produce the double number of cigars in a certain time or still more withoutrequiring more service andlwithout increasing the velocity of the machine working according to hitherto known methods. Even if themachine according to the invention works with a less velocity than hitherto known machines, it is possible to obtain a greater output, and in such case the advantage is attained that the wearing out of the machine is decreased.
A preferred embodiment of a machine adapted for executing the processaccording to the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 shows a plan viewof the machine.
Fig.2 shows the position of a bunch in relationto a wrapper when the wrapping operation begins.
Fig. 3 shows in an enlarged scale a cross-section on the line A-B in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 shows a plan view of a modification of a device according to the invention.
Fig. 5 shows a cross-section of the modification according to Fig. 4.
.Beside the cigar machine proper a bunch producing device I is positioned, .The cigar machine is provided with a buncher consisting of two r-' tatable drums 2 and 3 provided at their periphery with moulds 3 which latter have the same shape as the bunches. An arm 4 is secured to a rotative shaft 5 journaled in the machine frame l2. A toothed segment 34 is keyed to the shaft 5 and meshes with another toothed segment 35 on a bell-crank lever 36 pivoted to a pin 31. The free end of the bell-crank lever has a roller 38 which runsin a curved groove 39 in a cam 40 which is keyed to a rotatable drive shaft 4|, the latter being driven in any convenient manner from a drive source, thereby imparting reciprocating swinging movements to the arm 4.
Another vertical shaft I9 is also rotatably journaled in the frame I 2 and carries an arm 9. A toothed segment 42 is keyed to the shaft l9 and meshes with another toothed segment 43 on a bell-crank lever 44 pivoted to a pin 45. The free end of the bell-crank lever has a roller 46 which runs in a curved groove 41 in a cam 48 which is keyed to the shaft 4| which thus imparts reciprocating swinging movements to the arm 9.
' The arms 4 and 9 respectively are provided with retaining holders havingpinchers 20 pivoted to plates 2| on the arms and forced together by springs 23. Each pincher- 20 has an upper projecting lug 49. arm 9 are provided each with a thin slot 22 permitting theengagement of a cutter blade l0 on the frame l2. a The machine is also provided witha device for cutting off the clippings from the wrapped cigar, said device'comprising scissor-blades and 8 arranged on the path of the swinging arm 9,and actuated in any well-known manner, for instance by means of a pin 50 engaging slots 5| in-the blades 1 and 8 respectively. The blades are fulcrumed at 52 and a rod 53 carries the pin 50. Vertical reciprocating movements are imparted to the rod 53 in any manner well known. in the art and therefore description thereof is not needed herein. For cutting the wrapper a cutting device such as a die'sh'ell29is provided on the frame l2. A leaf carrier 30 is provided on a swinging arm 3| which is carried by a vertical'shait 32 which is also rotatably journaled in the frame I 2 and carries a toothed segment 54 meshing with another toothed segment 55 on a doublearmed lever 56 fulcrumed at 51 and having a roller 58 on its free end which engages a curved groove 59 in a cam 60 keyed tothe shaft 4|. Thereby reciprocating swinging movementsare imparted to the arm 3| on the continuous rotary movement of the shaft 4|. A cigar-wrapping device 6 is provided'having a cluster developed and driven in any manner well known in the art and therefore needing no description herein. Finally a container is provided in the frame for receiving from the holders cigars which have passed the cutting devices. Shoulders 6| are p0 sitioned above the drum 3, the wrapping mechanism 6' and the container H in such manner that they; engage the lugs 2| of the pinchers '20 as the arms 4 and 9 respectively are swung into a position above the stations mentioned, whereby the pinchers are opened and closed'respec- The pinchers of the tively for delivering or gripping a bunch or cigar.
In operating the machine above described, a bunch [4 produced in the device I is inserted in a mould I3 in the drum 2 and. transferred from said drum to the other drum 3 in known manner. Then the pinchers of the arm 4fetch thebunch from the drum 3 and transfer it to the rolling device 6 where it is provided with a wrapper. As
according to an embodiment of the invention abunch adapted for two cigars, each end'oi which forms the tip of one cigar, is treated, the dimensions and the shape of the bunch producing device, the buncher and the-rolling deviceare ac commodated to the purpose.
Before the wrapping of the bunch a tobacco leaf is applied on the die-shell 29. where a wrapper, the shape and dimensions of which are accommodated to that of the bunch, is cut out and the wrapper is caught by the leaf carrier 30', both processes being carried out in well known manner. It is well known that in order to .ensure proper wrapping, the wrapper must be flexible and moist. The wrapper is transferred from the die-shell to the rolling device 6 byswinging the shaft. 3.2 with the arm 31. During this transferring movement the leaf carrier passes a pastecontainer 33, where as well the one end [8 of the wrapper 16 as the middle portion I! of the same is provided with paste. The hatchet surfaces in Fig. 2 show how. the paste is applied on the wrapper. Paste is applied on the middle portion of the'wrapper. sothat at both sides of the out after dividingthe wrapped bunch, the wrapper is firmly fixed to the bunch .duringthe cutting although the bunch has got out of shape.
After having been wrapped the cigar-body is immediately caught by the pinchers 20, whereafter the arm 9 swings in the direction of the arrow againstv the cutters i and 8, which out off clippings at bothends of the cigar. On the eontinued swinging movement-of the arm 9 in the direction of the arrow, the wrapped bunch is divided by the knife, 1.!) at the space 22 between the pinchers 20. This cutting operation should be performed while the wrapper is still moist in order. to avoid tearing of the wrapper. T-wo finished cigars are thus obtained.
The cigars cutoff. remainin the pinchers 20, after having passed the knife I!) until they reach the container, H during, the swinging movement of the arm ,9 and. are deliveredinto said container.
Since the slot 22 of the pinchers 20 is very small asufiicient support is obtained for the cigars during the'dividing operation and the cut surfaces will be smooth and a scratchingof the tobacco is avoided.
Instead of a fixed knife ID as shown in Fig. 1 it is of course possible to use a rotatable blade.
'S aid knife l may of course be applied anywhere on thetravelling path of the cigar-body l between the-rolling device 6 and the container H e g. at the scissor-blades I, 8.
Thecigar-body may also be at rest during dividingoperation.
:A device adapted for executing the process last mentioned is shown in Figs. 4 and 5.-
The holder consists of two elements 24, 25, pro vided with longitudinal grooves and separated the from each other by a thin space 26. In front of said space a pair of scissors is arranged. The
elements '24, 25 may be turned over round a spindlez28. m
'Ihecigar-body is conveyed by the arml9 to the holder 24, 25, where it is divided by the scissor blades 21. Thereafter the holder turns over and delivers the finished cigars into the container H or to a descending surface leading to said container.
The device may also be arranged in the way that the cigar-bodies roll down into the groove of the holder from the rolling device.
It is also possible to make a bunch corresponding to the total length of more than two cigars,
by rolling a single wrapper round this bunch and dividing the cigar-body thus obtained into more than two cigars. I v
The number of cutting means It for dividing the cigar body as well as the number of parts, separated by thin spaces, of which the holder of the cigar-body consists, then of course is accommodated to the purpose.
