Description

W. M. BROOKS SEALING MEANS A ril 30, 1935;.
Filed March 30, 1954 INVENTOR [WW 7m 1570M;
ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 30, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to scaling elements, and has for its main object and feature the production of a shackle seal which consists essentially of a sealing means and a single blank of sheet material in such a way that the device when sealed is not bulky as the blank of sheet material is not unduly distorted out of its plane.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is disclosed in a concrete and preferred form in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of one face of the device, embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the reverse side;
Fig. 3 is an edge view of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of arrow 3;
Fig.4 is a view similar to Fig. l but showing the parts in their sealed position; and
Fig. 5 is an edge view of Fig. 4 looking in the direction of arrow 5.
A blank of sheet material is stamped out, or otherwise produced, to form a main portion l and a shackle portion'2 of substantially inverted U-shape, said main and shackle portions being integral and located in substantially the same plane as shown. The main portion has, within its boundary and near one side 3 thereof, provision for the reception of sealing means. In the present instance, this provision consists of an opening 4 which may be formed by striking up two legs 5. The sealing means here consists of a body of compressible material as lead 6. The shackle portion extends from top 1 of the main portion, adjacent its other side 8, in an upward direction, then curves back and then extends downwardly at an angle to the vertical to a point beyond side 3 and below top I of the main portion. The free end 9 of the shackle portion has provision for the reception of sealing means, here in the form of an opening Ill, and the curved part of said shackle portion has a cut-away portion II to facilitate bringing the free end of the shackle portion over the face of the main portion without excessive buckling or distortion of said shackle portion.
It will now be understood that, when itis desired to close the device, the shackle portion is brought slightly out of the plane of the blank and the angular position of its downwardly extending leg is changed sufliciently to bring openings 4 and 5 ll] into alinement. Sealing means 6 may be seated in opening 4 before the closing of the device, or it may be inserted after openings 4 and ID are brought into alinement. After the sealing means is caused to project through both 10 openings 4 and I0, it is compressed in the usual Way. It will be observed that during this process the shackle member has been distorted but slightly and that its face has not been reversed, the same face l2 of the shackle portion facing the same way. It will further be seen that the device is extremely simple and inexpensive.
I claim:
A sealing element formed from: a blank of sheet material including a main portion and a shackle portion of substantially inverted U- shape, said main and shackle portions being integral and located in substantially the same plane; said main portion having, within its boundary and near one side thereof, provision for the reception of sealing means; said shackle portion extending, from the top of said main portion and adjacent its other side, in an upward direction, then curving back and then extending downwardly at a angle to the vertical to a point beyond the first-mentioned side of the main portion and below the top of the latter; the free end of the shackle portion having provision for the reception of sealing means, and the curved part of said shackle portion having a cut-away portion to thereby facilitate bringing the free end of the shackle portion over the face of the main portion without excessive buckling of said shackle portion; and means to seal the free end of the shackle portion and the main portion together.
