Description

G. KOLB April 30, 1935.
COMBINATION FLATWARE AND UNDER REFLECTING SURFACE Filed 'March 16, 1955 INVENTOR. GEORG E' K o L B BYQQW ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 30, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CDMBINATION FLAT'WARE AND UNDER REFLEOTKNG SURFACE 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to a flatware combination for use in serving dinners,.teas and the like.
It is an object of the present invention to pro- 5 vide a flatware combination capable of producing a decorative and beautiful effect while at the same time functioning to protect the table and to support comestibles or dishes holding the same.
It is another object of the invention to provide a flatware combination having an under reflecting surface and 'a bottom flange containing a decorative design or the like.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a flatware combination having an under reflecting mirror and a flat plate with a flange at a critical reflecting angle containing a decorative design on the bottom thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention; and
Fig. 2 illustrates an elevational view of the embodiment shown in Fig. 1.
The reference character P designates a plate such as an opaque china service dinner or bread plate. At the periphery of the plate, a flange F is provided. This flange extends at a critical angle A which permits the free reflection of a decorative design D incorporated on the bottom of the flange.
Under plate P is a reflecting surface M. In practice, it is preferred to utilize a mirror although any appropriate speculum may be used. For best results, a circular reflecting surface or reflector is employed. When a circular mirror is placed under plate P with the critical reflecting angle, highly decorative effects have been obtained at a dinner table which was set with the novel flatware combination described here- For instance, when the present flatware combination containing a decorative design on the bottom embodying a dinner service plate is used for setting a table, remarkable and beautiful effect is produced.
In Fig. 1, it will be observed that the reflection R of the design D may be clearly seen in mirror M. By using colors in the decorative design, an unexpected and colorful effect will be obtained. Of course, the colored effect cannot be illustrated in the drawing due to the necessity of employing only black ink.
It is preferred to have the top of plate P devoid of any designs. In this manner the decorative effect will be accentuated. Of course, circular lines or the like may be used.
In certain instances, a bead B is provided at the periphery of flange F and preferably on the underside thereof. By coloring the bead with gold, a very attractive border may be made which will surround the reflections R of the design and will provide a frame therefor.
It has been discovered that the critical reflecting angle should not be less than approximately 20. As the result of tests, it was found that the critical reflecting angle may vary from approximately 20 to approximately 42. When the flatware combination has a flange with a critical reflecting angle not less than about 20 and not more than about 42, the best results have been obtained. In other Words, the design incorporated on the bottom of the flange is reflected clearly in the mirror and the reflections are visible to an observer.
Although the present invention has been described in conjunction with a preferred embodiment, it is to be observed that modifications and variations may be resorted to as one skilled in the art will readily understand and that such modifications and variations are within the purview of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A flatware combination adapted for use with a dinner set comprising a plate, a peripheral flange sloping at a critical reflecting angle to said plate, said critical reflecting angle being not less than about 20, a design incorporated on the bottom of said flange, and a separate under reflecting surface capable of reflecting said design to make the latter visible to an observer whereby a decorative and beautiful effect is produced.
2. A flatware combination adapted for use with a dinner set comprising 2. china plate, a flange extending at a critical reflecting angle thereto, said critical angle being not less than about 20, a bead located at the periphery of said flange and extending to the under side thereof, a design incorporated on the bottom of said flange, and a separate mirror capable of reflecting said design and making the latter visible to an observer whereby a decorative and beautiful elfect is produced.
3. A flatware combination adapted for use with a dinner set comprising a circular china plate, an annular flange extending at a critical reflecting angle thereto, said critical angle being not less than about 20, a bead located at the periphery of said flange and extending to the under side thereof, a design incorporated on the bottom of said flange, and a separate circular mirror capable of reflecting said design and making the latter visible to an observer whereby a decorative and beautiful effect is produced.
