The H! and 2!! and [9a, 29a. Pins 25and 25a are then 5 inserted or projected to their normal positions, thereby locking the ring and adaptor against displacement, the abutments l9 and lfla and the follower pins 25 and 25a preventing lugs 23 and 23a from aligning with channels 2! and 2 la and thus preventing disengagement of the ring and adaptor.
On the ring are hinge cars 26 to receive a hinge pin 2'1. The hinge pin 2? secures the hinge leaf on lid 28. Diametrically opposite the ears 2G is a projection 29 to slidably hold a latch 30 having a downwardly turned follower end. The lid '28 has a keeper recess 3! for entrance therein of the latch. In the upper face of adaptor i is a cam groove 32 having an arcuate portion concentric with the adaptor and a slanting portion. The follower portion of the latch rests in the cam groove 32. The cam groove 32 is related to the cam surfaces I! and i8 so that the slanting portion will act on latch 35! to project the latter prior to the adaptor and lid being drawn together by the rotating movement. The arcuate portion of cam groove 32 is positioned so that the follower of latch SE is disposed therein while the lugs 23 are in the ramp portions of groove IS. An annular rib 33 is provided on the inner surface of lid 28 to engage a gasket 34 on the adaptor. Thus, when the lid is closed as shown in Fig. 3 the rib 33 will make sealing contact with the f gasket.
The cap having been attached'to a filler tube is operated in the following manner. Assume the cap is open and in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The lid 28 is first swung downwardly to its closed position and then given a twist. This will cause the ring 22 to rotate or move angularly on its base l9 and the latch 39 to be projected into its keeper thereby locking the lid to the ring. At the last position of the twisting movement, longitudinal or axial movement of the ring in relation to the adaptor occurs so as to move the adaptor against the lid and draw'rib 33 into sealing contact with gasket 34. The arouate portion of cam groove 32 permits this drawing of the lid against the base after looking has occurred. To open the cap, the lid is given a twist in the opposite direction so as to first move the adaptor and lid out of sealing contact and then to unlock the lid enabling it to be raised.
What I claim is:
