products, such as lamb patties, croquettes orthe like. 5 In forming lamb patties, for example, it has beennecessary to shape them by hand and the process is rather laborious and considerable time is required for. the formation of each article. When patties are formed in this manner it is diffioult to make them of uniformshape and size. It is undesirable also that the food be in contact with the hands or" the persons making the patties. I provide a molding device by means of which lamb patties or similar articles of food may be prepared without contact with the hands of the operator and with substantial saving in time. In addition, the completed articles are of uniform size'and shape and accordingly they are more attractive in appearance. V
The molding device consists in general of a molding chamber that is adjustable to provide for difierentsizes of molded articles and it com prises also an arrangement whereby, after the material is molded, a strip or band of bacon may be placed around the molded portion of the patty and'secured in position thereon. The patty may then be withdrawn from the mold in its completed form.
Thedetails of my invention will be described -in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig, 1 is a view in longitudinal section of a molding device; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the molding device of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation as viewed from the left Fig. 2; the cover being removed; Fig. 4 is an end elevation of a molding attachment for the device of Fig. 1; Fig, 5 is a view in longitudinal section taken on line V-V of Fig. 4; Figs. 6 and '7 are respectively reduced side and end elevational views of a stufiing device for attachment to the molding device of Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a reduced perspective view of a decorating device that is adapted to be attached to the stufiingdevice of Figs. 6 and 7.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the molding device of my invention comprises a hollow cylinder I which may be of sheet-metal and is open at both ends thereof. may also be of sheet-metal and is closed at both ends thereof telescopes within the hollow cylinder I and it is slidably movable therein for the purpose of adjusting the length of a molding chamber 3 at the left as viewed'inFigs. 1 and 2.
Adjacent the left or upper end of the hollow cylinder I, as the device is used in practice, a
A plunger 2 which '5 Claims. (01. 107-19) sleeve 4 surrounds the cylinder I and is slidably movable relative thereto. The sleeve 5, which is in the form of an annular band, carries two semicylindrical members 5 that are connected thereto by means of hinges 6, the latter appearing in Fig, 2. The members 5 are provided on their interior surfaces with a series of grooves I for a purpose to be later described.
A flanged cover plate 8 is adapted to fit over the ends of the hinged members 5 when the latter are in their closed positions in which they are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The plunger 2 is provided at its lower end with a spring latch member It! by means of which it is adapted to be detachably secured to the cylinder I by means of a hollow or tubular member I I having a series of notches or slots I2 therein for engagement by a hook I3 at the upper end of the member Iii. The hook I3 is also adapted to engage an inwardly flanged member I4 that is secured to the sleeve 4 for the purpose of detachably connecting the plunger 2 and the sleeve 4 for permitting movement of the cylinder I without disturbing the relative positions of the plunger 2 and the sleeve 4.
The cylinder I is provided with an outwardly extending member l5 by means of which the cylinder I may be moved with respect to the sleeve 4 and also with respect to the plunger 2 when the latter is connected to the sleeve 4. It Will be understood that when the latch member It connects the plunger 2 to the cylinder I-both of these parts may be moved together relative to the sleeve 4. p
In the operation of the molding device, it may be assumed that the material to be molded for the forming of lamb patties has been prepared in suitable form for molding. The plunger 2 is adjusted with respect to the cylinder I to provide a-molding chamber, 3 of desired depth in the open end of the cylinder I. The latch member Ill engages one of the slots !2 to retain the plunger in its adjusted position. The cover 8 is removed and the hinged members 5 are opened by swinging them outwardly beyond the dot-anddash lines of Fig. 2. The cylinder 1, together with the plunger 2, is then withdrawn downwardly through the sleeve 4 until the top of the cylinder I is'substantially flush with the top of the sleeve 4. The material for the molded portion of the lamb patty is then inserted in the chamber provided by the open end of the cylinder I until the space is substantially filled. V
The cylinder I, together with the plunger 2, is then moved upwardly through the sleeve '3 to substantially the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
A strip or a band of bacon is placed around the upper end of the cylinder l with the molded material inside thereof and the hinged members 5 are closed, the grooves 1 operating to retain the bacon in position. The cover 8 may then be placed on the outer ends of the members 5 and the plunger 2 is moved upwardly to cause the material within the cylinder to be pressed or compacted within the upper end of the cylinder 1.
The latch member H! is then released and the cylinder l is withdrawn downwardly without disturbing the relative positions of the sleeve 4 and the plunger 2. The molded material remains in its position on top of the plunger 2. The strip or band of bacon is then secured to the central portion of the molded material of the lamb patty, as by means of small wooden pins which may be of any suitable size or shape. This latter operation is permitted by slots 5? in the hinged members 5. The slots may be of such size and shape as to readily permit the openings of the members 5 after the pins are in position. Slots may be also provided in the end of the cylinder l, butif the device is manipulated in the manner described herein, they are unnecessary.
When the cover 8 has been removed, the hinged members 5 are opened outwardly beyond the positions shown by dot-and-dash lines, Fig. 2, the plunger 2 is moved upwardly relative to the cylinder l and sleeve 6 to raise the molded portion of the lamb patty on a level with the tops of the cylinder l and sleeve 4, whereby the completed patty may be removed. The apparatus is then adjusted for a succeeding lamb patty and the operation described above is repeated.
The foregoing description of the operation of the molding device has been given by way of example as it is obvious that the sequence of manipulation of the parts may be varied somewhat without affecting the results securedthereby.
It will be noted from the foregoing that my improved molding device is simple in construction and expeditious in operation to form lamb patties of desired size and the product is of uniform size and appearance, inasmuch as all of the material for forming the patties may be handled by suitable implements without touching the hands.
While the principal purpose for which the molding device is provided is as described above, it is also adapted for other uses such, for example, as in molding croquettes or ice cream in novel forms by means of the apparatus shown in Figs. 4 and 5. A molding device l9, having an annular sleeve 25 for surrounding the upper end of the hollow cylinder l is connected to the interior of the cylinder l by means of a relatively small aperture 21 whereby material may be forced therethrough by means of the operation of the plunger 2. It wiil be understood that the outer end of the mold l9 may be held against a vessel or flat surface and the molded article may be readily separated from the remainder of the material by reason of the relatively small aperture 2| which connects it thereto. While the molding device 59 is shown of substantially pyramidal form it may have various shapes as desired.
A further adaptation of the device is in connection with the device shown in Figs. 6 and 7 which comprises a tubular member adapted to fit over the upper end of the cylinder l and to be fastened thereto as by means of a bayonet joint 24 and which is provided with a nozzle 25 of substantially rectangular form which may be used, for example, in preparing stulfed pork chops. This operation, which has been performed manually heretofore, has always been attended with difilculties. However, by means of the device of Figs. 1 and 2, when provided with the attachment shown in Figs. 6 and '7, the stumng material may be easily and readily forced into suitable slits or openings provided therefor in the pork chops by inserting the nozzle therein and operating the plunger 2 to force the material through the nozzle 25.
A further adaptation of the molding device is provided by the use of the decorating device 26 shown in Fig. 8. This device, which is of such cross-section and size as to fit upon the nozzle 25, is providedvwith a series of spaced openings or holes 21 by means of which decorating material may be supplied to-cakes or other articles of food,
such, for example, as in providing them with chocolate .or other plastic decorating material.
The foregoing uses for which my improved molding device is adapted are given by way of example only and it is'not intended to be limited thereto except as expressed in the claims.
I claim:
