This invention relates to robes or gowns worn by patients or invalids at the time that they are being treated or operated on and particularly to a robe adapted for use by the patients of doctors,

chiropractors and Osteopaths.

The general object of the present invention is to provide a robe of this character which is so constructed that any part of the robe may be adjusted to expose any desired part of the patients body without removing the remainder of the robe and without exposing the other parts of the body which are not to be treated.

A further object is to provide a robe of this character comprising a one piece garment easily put on and removed and provided with flaps in the front and back which may be unfastened or adjusted so as to allow either front or back of the patient or both front and back of the patient to be exposed as desired without exposing any other part of the body.

Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a front View of the operating robe;

Figure 2 is a like View to Figure 1 but showing the abdominal flap opened;

Figure 3 is a rear view of the operating robe with the back flap closed;

Figure 4 is a like View to Figure 3 but showing the back flap opened.

Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that the robe designated generally it! is of a non-fiting character and provided with the short sleeves H. The upper end of the robe is provided with a relatively large neck opening l2 and slits l3 extend from this neck opening downward into the tops of the sleeves. Tapes M are provided at the upper ends of these slits at their junction with the neck opening, thus permitting, if the ties are released, the shoulders of the patient to be exposed or both ties to be released and the upper portion of the body around the neck and both shoulders to be exposed.

The lower part of the body is split at both sides as at 55, this split extending upward to approximately the waist of the body. The rear half of the lower portion of the skirt is so formed as to lap over the margins of the front half as at l6.

Tapes or other means may be used for holding the margins of the two halves of the body in engagement with each other but ordinarily this is not desirable and ample protection is given by merely splitting the skirt. The front of the body 1932, Serial No. 598,045

is provided with an opening ll which may have and is illustrated as having a straight transversely extending lower wall it. This opening has a width nearly that of the front of the garment and is normally closed by a flap l9 connected to the lower wall of the opening and held in a closed position by means of the tapes 2E3 or other suitable means for this purpose. This iiap permits access to be had to the lower portion of the abdomen. The opening preferably extends upward to a point above the armpits and the lower wall or" the opening is disposed preferably below the upper ends of the slits l5. The back of the garment above the waist is formed with an opening it shown as rectangular, this opening 2| extending downward from the neck of the garment to a point preferably even with the upper ends of the slits it, though I do not wish to be limited to this. This opening is normally closed by a flap 22 conterminous with the bottom portion of the garment and held closed by the tapes 23 attached to the side walls of the opening 2! and by the tapes I4. As illustrated, a single tape [4 is attached to the front of the garment at the upper end of the slit l3 and extends through a loop [4a on the back of the garment and then is attached to a tape 24 on the flap 22. The loop [4a is secured, as best illustrated in Fig. 4, to the rear portion of the sleeve H at the slitted neck end thereof, whereby, as will be clearly understood, the tape M may be passed through the loop and tied upon itself to hold the slitted portion of the sleeve closed with the back flap 22 detached and open, or the tape i i may be inserted through the loop Ma and secured to the tape 24 or may be secured directly to the tape 24 without passing through the loop if it is desired to hold the back flap closed and leave the slitted sleeve portion open for any purpose. It is obvious that by detaching the tapes 24 and M the entire upper portion of the garment may be opened and the garment slipped down over the shoulders of the patient.

By opening the flap 22, access may be had to the upper and lower portion of the back of the patient and by opening the flap l9 access may be had to the chest of the patient and to the lower portion of the abdomen. While I have shown the robe as being slitted along its sides, I wish it to be understood that the skirt portion if so desired may be split in the center of the front or center of the back or at the front, back and sides as well so that access may be had conveniently to either portion of the body.

It will be seen that I have provided a robe which is thoroughly protective of the patient and which may be opened to expose any desired portion of the patients body without exposing the remainder of the body and that it will permit the operator to have access to any portion of the body either for purposes of observation or for manipulation.

A garment of the character described, consisting of a body portion and sleeves, the body portion being formed with a back opening extending from the neck downward, a flap adapted to extend upward from the body portion at the back thereof to close the back opening, the sleeves being slitted into the neck portion of the garment, and the back portions of the sleeves at the neck corners being provided with loops, tapes connected to the front portions of the sleeves at the neck portion of the garment, and tapes secured to the back flap at the relatively free end thereof whereby the first named tapes may be passed through said loops and connected to the tapes of the back flap or connected to the tapes of the back flap without passing through said loops, 1
