or cord, fabric, ribbon, or rubber strips may be wound to maintain the material in orderly progressive coils and adaptable for ready withdrawal therefrom, manipulation, and for shipping thereof. The invention particularly relates to the construction of a mandrel or spool of which the major parts are formed of a light and cheap material and yet has sufficient strength to withstand the strains to which such-a member is commonly subjected in use.
Our invention has for an object to provide a spool formed for the most part of a light and inexpensive material, such as paper or fiber board and thelike, and adapted to receive in coiled relationjthereto-a quantity of coilable material, such as wire, cord, ribbon, and-the like, for'the subsequent dispensation of the coilable material therefrom. The invention has another object tov provide a spool having a spindle part formed of paper or fiber board and the like having means for securely connecting each of the ends of said spindle part to a discular part formed of paper board, the discular parts acting to maintain a material wound on the spindle part.
Our invention consists in other features and advantages which will appearfrom the following description and upon examination of the drawings. Structurescontaining the invention may partake of different forms and still embody the invention. To illustrate a practical application of our invention, we have selected a spool and two modified forms thereof as examples of the various structures and details thereof that contain the invention and shall describe the selected structures hereinafter, it being understood that variations may be made without. departing from the spirit of the invention. The particular spools selected are shown in the accompanying drawings and described hereinafter.

In the particular spool construction illustrated in the drawings and embodying. our invention, a spindle part .I is provided of suflicient length to receive, in wound coiled relation thereto,.a quantity of material, such as wire, cord, or ribbon. The spindle part is preferably tubular in shape and formed of paper or fiber board. In order to guide the material wound on the spindle and to maintain itrelative to the spindle when wound, the spindle is connected at each of its ends to an end part 3. Each end part 3 is preferably of discular shape and formed of stiffened paper or paper board and is of a diameter sufficiently extensive to confine the materials coiled on the spindle part;
Each discular end part 3 is connected to its associated spindle part end by a sleevemember 4. The sleeve member 4 is formed preferably of sheet metal and is adapted to receive, coaxially therewith, an end of the spindle part, as shown at 5 in Fig. 2. The. spindle part may be locked to the sleeve member 4 by crimping the sleeve member 4, as shown at t, to produce a portion of the sleeve member having a somewhat reduced diameter and a serrated interior surface I tending to grip and lock the spindle part I to the sleeve member.
If desired, the sleeve member 4 may of suitable shoulder portions Ill.
The shoulders II] are preferably formed of bent extensions of the sleeve member body and extend inwardly at right angles to the axis of the sleeve member. The tabs 9 may have rounded corners l and are adapted to be inserted through the particular associated discular end part to locate the same substantially coaxial with the sleeve member and consequently with the spindle I.
If desired, the
discular end part may have suitable arcuate slits l2 through which the tabs 9 may be inserted and assembly of the spool thus facilitated.
The tabs 9 are adapted to be rolled or bent upon themselves, as shown at Hi, to press the particular discular endpart against the shoulders l0 and to thus lock the discular end part relative to the sleeve member.
Preferably, the tabs are rolled or bent upon themselves in a direction away from the axis of the sleeve member to provide greater resistance to forces tending to separate the sleeve member and the discular end part. If desired, each discular end part may be provided with a central opening I5 through which may be inserted an arbor or mandrel rod for mounting the spool. However, the diameter of the opening I5 should not be of a dimension greater than the innermost point of extension of the shoulder portions II).
In the modified form of construction shown in Fig. .5 of the drawings, each end part 3 is mounted relative to the spindle part I by a sleeve member 20. The sleeve member 20 is located in coaxial relation to the spindle I and is locked relative thereto by suitably crimped portions 2I formed in the sleeve member. The sleeve member has end-wise extending tabs 22 which are adapted to be inserted through the end part 3 and be bent or spun over in a direction away from the axis of the sleeve member to draw the end part toward and against the sleeve member end. If desired, the end part 3 may be provided with a plurality of arcuate slits 23 through which the tabs 22 may be inserted.
In order to further reinforce the thus established relation of the spindle I and end part 3', the sleeve member has a conically shaped skirt portion 24 which extends from the end of the sleeve member opposite to the tabs 22 toward the end part 3. The skirt portion 24 has a plurality of tabs 25 which extend from the rim or edge thereof and are adapted to be inserted through the end part 3' at points intermediate the axis of the end part and the outer edge thereof. If desired, the end part may be provided with a plurality of arcuate slits 26 for receiving the tabs 25. The tabs 25 are then bent upon themselves or spun over in a direction away from the axis of the sleeve member to press the end part 3' against the rim or edge of the skirt portion 24. Thus, the end part will be locked at points proximate to its axis and at points materially spaced therefrom against movements relative to the spindle I.
In the further modified form shown in Fig. 6, each end part I is mounted relative to the spindle I by a sleeve member 28. The sleeve member 28 is located in coaxial relation to the spindle I and is locked relative thereto by suitably crimped portions 29. The sleeve member has end tabs 30 which are adapted to be inserted through the end part 3 and be bent or spun over in a direction away from the axis of the sleeve member to press the end part against the sleeve member end.
In order to further reinforce the end part against relative movement with regard to the spindle I, the sleeve member has a conically shaped skirt portion 32 extending from the end of the sleeve member opposite to points of connection of the tabs 30 and toward and around the peripheral edge of the end part 3. The edge of the skirt portion 32 is adapted to be bent or wrapped around the peripheral edge of the end part 3 to form a channel portion 34. The end part 3 is thus locked against movement relative to the spindle I and the peripheral edge of the end part 3 is provided with a protecting sheath resistant to wear developed in contact of the end part 3 with a supporting surface.
We claim:
1. A spool having a spindle part formed of paper material, a spindle end part formed of paper material, a means for connecting the spindie end part to one end of the spindle part comprising a sleeve member, the sleeve member being telescopically disposed on the said end of the spindle part and in coaxial relation thereto, the sleeve member having an end-wise extending tab portion, a shoulder portion formed on the sleeve member having a surface in a plane substantially common with the base of the tab portion, the tab portion being inserted through the said spindle end part and bent to press the said spindle end part against the said surface of the shoulder portion to lock the spindle end part to the sleeve member and relative to the spindle part.

A spool having a cylindrical spindle formed of paper material, a pair of end parts formed of paper material, a sleeve member for connecting one of said pair of end parts to each end of the spindle, the sleeve member being telescopically disposed on said end of the spindle part in coaxial relation thereto and having serrations for securely connecting the sleeve to the spindle, the sleeve having a plurality of end-wise extending tab portions and a plurality of flanges disposed proximate to and between the bases of the tab portions, the flanges having surfaces in a plane extending at right angles to the axis of the sleeve, the said tab portions being inserted through the said end part and bent to press said end part against said flanges to securely connect the end part to the spindle.

A spool having a tubular spindle part formed of paper material, a pair of discular end parts formed of paper material, means for connecting one of said discular end parts to one end of said tubular spindle part comprising a sleeve member formed of sheet metal, the sleeve member being telescopically disposed on said end of the tubular spindle part in coaxial relation thereto, the sleeve member having a plurality of end tabs extending substantially parallel to the axis of the sleeve member, a plurality of shoulder portions formed on the sleeve member end in alternate sequence with respect to the said plurality of end tabs, the plurality of shoulder portions having surfaces in a plane common with each other and the bases of the plurality of end tabs, the plurality of end tabs being inserted through the said discular end part and bent to press the discular end part against the surfaces of said shoulder portions to lock the said discular end part to the sleeve member and relative to the tubular spindle part.

A spool having a tubular spindle part formed of paper material, a pair of end discular parts formed of paper material, means for connecting one of said pair of said end discular parts to one end of the tubular spindle part comprising a sleeve member formed of sheet metal and being telescopically disposed on an end of the tubular spindle part in coaxial relation thereto, means for locking the sleeve member in said telescopic coaxial relation to the tubular spindle part, the sleeve member having a plurality of end tabs extending substantially parallel to the axis of the sleeve member, the sleeve member having a plurality of end shoulder portions extending towards the axis thereof and located in alternate sequence with respect to the said plurality of end tabs, the plurality of shoulder portions having surfaces in a plane common with each other end with the bases of the plurality of end tabs, the plurality of end tabs being inserted through the said discular end part and bent to press the discular end part against the said surfaces of the said shoulder portions to lock the said discular.

A spool having a tubular spindle part formed of paper material, a pair of discular spindle-end parts formed of paper materiaLmeans forcon- ,necting one of the said discular spindle-end parts to one end of the tubular spindle part comprising a sleeve member; the sleeve member formed of sheet metal and being telescopically disposed on saidend of the tubular spindle part in coaxial relation thereto, the sleeve member having crimped portions for locking the said end of said tubular spindle part in said telescopical coaxial relation to the sleeve member, the sleeve member having a plurality of end tabs extending substantially parallel to the axis of the sleeve member, the sleeve member having a plurality of end shoulder portions extending toward the axis thereof and located in alternate sequence with respect to the said plurality of end tabs, the plurality of shoulder portions having surfaces in a plane common with each other andwith the bases of the plurality of end tabs, the said discular spindle-end part having aplurality of arcuate slits, the plurality of tabs being inserted through the said arcuate slits of said discular spindle-end part and rollingly bent in a direction away from the axis of the sleeve member to press the discular spindle-end part against the said surfaces of said shoulder portions to lock the said discular spindle-end part to the sleeve member and relative to the tubular spindle part.

Aspool having a spindle part formed of paper material, an end part formed of paper material, means for connecting the end part to one end of the spindle part comprising a sleeve member, the sleeve member being telescopically disposed on the said end of the spindle partin coaxial relation thereto, means for locking the sleeve member against movement relative to the l spindle part, a plurality of tabs extending from one end of the sleeve member and being inserted through the end part and bent to press the end part against the said end of the sleeve member, the sleeve member havingv a conically shaped portion extending from the other end of the sleeve member toward the end part and being connected to the end part, reinforcing the same against movement relative to the spindle part.

A spool having. a spindle part formed of paper material, an end part formed of paper material, means for connecting the end part to one end of the spindle part comprising a sleeve member, the sleeve member being telescopically I disposed on the said end of the spindle part in coaxial relation thereto, means for locking the sleeve member against movement relative to the spindle part, a plurality of tabs extending from one end of the sleeve member and being inserted through the end part and bent to press the end part against the said end of the sleeve, member, the sleeve member having a conically shaped portion extending from the other end of the sleeve member toward the end part, the conically shaped portion having a plurality of tabs, the tabs being inserted through the end part at points intermediate the center and edge thereof and bent to press the end part against the conically shaped portion reinforcing the end part against movement relative to the spindle part.

A spool having a spindle part formed of paper material, an end part formed of paper material, means for connecting the end part to one end of the spindle part comprising a sleeve member, the sleeve member being telescopically disposed on the said end of the spindle part in coaxial relation thereto, means for locking the sleeve member against movement relative to the spindle part, a plurality of tabs extendingfrom one end of the sleeve member and being inserted through the end part and bent to press the end part against the said end. of the sleeve member, 3
the sleeve member having a conically shaped portion extending from, the other end .of the sleeve member toward the end partythe conically shaped portion having a channeled edge for receiving the end part edge to reinforce the end part against movement relative to the spindle part. 7

A spool having a spindle part formed of papenmaterial, an end part formed of paper material, and means for connecting the end part to one, end of the spindle part comprising a sleeve member, the sleeve member being telescopically mounted on the said end of the spindle partin coaxial relation thereto, means for locking the sleeve member against movement relative to the spindle part, a plurality of tabs extending from one end of the sleeve member and being inserted through the end part and bent to press the end part toward the said end of the said sleeve member, the sleeve member having a conically shaped portion extending toward the end part and being connected to the end part for reinforcing the same against movement relative to the spindle part.

A spool having a spindle part formed of paper material, a spindle end part formed of paper material, and means for connecting the spindle end part to one end of the spindle part comprising a sleeve member, the sleeve member being telescopically mounted in coaxial relation to the said end of the spindle part, the sleeve member having an endwise extending tab portion, a shoulder portion formed on the sleeve member having a surface in a plane substantially parallel with a transverse plane of the sleeve member, the tab portion being inserted through the said spindle end part and bent to press the spindle end part toward the said surface of the shoulder portion to lock the spindle end part to the sleeve member and relative to the spindle part.

A spool having a spindle part formed of paper material, a spindle endpart formed of paper material, and means for connecting the spindle end part to one end of the spindle part comprising a sleeve member, the sleeve member being telescopically mounted in coaxial relation to the said end of the spindle part, the sleeve member having a plurality of end-wise extending tab portions, the sleeve member having a plurality of end shoulder portions extending substantially at right angles to the axis of the sleeve member, the plurality of shoulder portions having surfaces in a plane common with each other, the plurality of end tabs being inserted through the said end part to press the end part against the said surfaces of the said shoulder portions to lock the said end part to the sleeve member and relative to the spindle part.

A spool having a spindle part formed of paper material, an end part formed of paper material, and means for connecting the end part to one end of the spindle part comprising a sleeve member, the sleeve member being telescopically mounted in coaxial relation to the said end of the spindle part, means for locking the sleeve member against movement relative to the spindle part, a plurality of tabs extending from one end of the sleeve member and being inserted through the end part and bent to press the end part toward the said end of the sleeve member, the sleeve member having a conically shaped portion extending toward the said end part, the conically shaped portion having a plurality of tabs, the tabs being inserted through the end part at points substantially intermediate the center and edge thereof and bent to press the end part against the conically shaped portion reinforcing the end part against movement relative to the spindle part.

A spool having a tubular spindle part formed of sheet material, a spindle end part formed of sheet material, and means for connecting the spindle end part to one end of the spindle part comprising a sleeve member, the sleeve member being telescopically mounted in coaxial relation to the said end of the spindle part, the sleeve member having an end-wise extending tab portion, a shoulder portion formed on the sleeve member having a surface in a plane substantially at right angles to the axis of the sleeve member, the tab portion being connected to the spindle end part and bent to press the said spindle end part against the said surface of the shoulder portion to lock the spindle end part to the sleeve member and relative to the spindle part. 14. A spool having a spindle part formed of paper material, a spindle end part formed of paper material, means for connecting the spindle end part to one end of the spindle part comprising a sleeve member, the said end of the spindle part being telescopically disposed within the sleeve member and in coaxial relation thereto, the sleeve member having a tab portion extending end-wise therefrom and located a distance from the axis of the sleeve member substantially equal to that of the sleeve member wall, the tab portion being inserted through the said spindle end part and bent to press the said spindle end part against the end of the sleeve member to lock the spindle end part to the sleeve member and relative to the spindle part.
