Horizontal guide rolls I4 are jarranged at the opposite front corners of the ma-v chine frame, and these rolls are adapted to guide the feed` cable during the various operations of the machine. During feedingl the -free end of the feed. cable is connectible in a well known mannerV to` an anchorarranged adjacent the `coal facevinadvance of the machine.VV As the feedV cable |3 is drawn innby` the'feed drum |2, the miningmachine isfed bodily over the mine floor. Arranged within. the vmachine frame is ahorizontal motor |5,' herein lpreferably ofthe re' versible `electric` type; *having its power shaft horizontally disposed vand extending longitudif nallyof the machine, andthe forward end of 25 the motor power. shaft is operativelyconnected to the feed drum l2 through a plural speed transmission mechanism. of the same general charac-v ter as that described in my copending application Ser. No; V136,446, led Sept. l20,1926, now rV maturedy into Patent No. 1,815,872; patented July 21,1931.`V` @y Y "Now referring tothe improved adjustable kerf cutting mechanism, it will be noted that keyed to the rear end of jthe motor power shaft, as shown in Fig. 3, is a bevel pinion I6 meshing with ahorizontal bevel gear |1, keyed to a vertical shaft I8 l and lsuitably journaled in the cutter frame section I9. Rotatable with and driven by the bevel gear I'l is a spur pinion 20 meshing ,with a large 40 spur gear 2| keyed at 22 toa clutch sleeve23 ro-V tatably mounted/on; a vertical shaft 241` This shaft is suitably `journaled Awithin the cutter Y frame section lll` and has formed thereon` clutch teeth 25-connectiblebya sliding clutch memberV 45 26 to clutch teeth 2.1.formed on the clutch sleeve 23. It will thus be seen that when the clutch-26 is in its connected position and theclutchteeth 25, V21 are-connectedtogether, the shaft 24 may be driven by the gear 2| through the bevel gearing 50V PATENT i7 i the latter is splinedat 32.

It willjthus'f'beseen' that the members-31, 39 formLaswivel'mounting for the kerf cutter on whichthe'latteris'mounted for swinging movement aboutl the aXis of ythe vertical shaft'iS'l. A
`The improved vmeans for swinging tliejkerf cutterabout its pivot hereiny comprises'a `vspur Y gear M 4rotatable with 'and Vdriven by the-spur gear 2|, Vandfrneshing with the spur'ge'ar 4|- are spur gears `ft2zandf||3 keyed to the'lower ends of parallel vertical shafts 44 and 45'res'pec`tively arranged vat opposite sides offthe longitudinal vertical center ofthe machine as shown Yinlligs. 4 and; Herein xed tothe'parallel' shafts 44 and 15,5 are worms `46f and 41 having teeth ofthe same pitch but of opposite 'inclination and f respectively meshing with *worml wheels 48 andllS. Theworm wheel disconnectible by "a multiplerdisc clutch 50 to a horizontal shaft 5| arranged transversely of the cutter frame section |9 and suitably jour-r naled therein. -Y The `worm, Wheel ||9fis connectiblek to the shaft 5| lby a'multiple disc clutch '52. Fixed to the yshaft 5| and-'drivefthereby lis a worm 53 meshing with a hcrizontalworm Wheel 54,hav ing Aits hub suitablywjournaled withini bearing sleeves 55; carried lW'ithrinfthe cutter frame 5 section.
The hub of this -wormwheel is splined at '5B to a vertical' shaft 51and'the shaft 51 entends 4throught-.he hub of the wormwhe'el and is driven by the worin wlee'el'through thesplined connection 55. The worm wheelhub vand the shaft 51 cooperate to provide an extensible driving connection in 'the form jof a telescopic torquel shaft similar to the telescopic torque shaft of the cutter chain drive. The upper endof the' shaft 51 is vnfiountedwithin a hollow sleeve 58 journaled' in a bearing59 supported"v by the adjustable'l frame Now` referring to the improved mechanism for adjusting the kerf cutter into different elevated positions, it will be observed that the shaft I8, as shown in Fig. 3, has formed integral therewith a bevel pinion 62 meshing with reverse bevels 63 and 615', as shown in Fig. 4. The reverse Abevels are selectively connectible to a Vhorizontal shaft 65 by multiple disc clutches 66'and 61 rev5, arekeyed at 16 at their upper ends to the adjustable'frame member 28 and are threaded at their `upper ends at '11gforfengagement with a tightening and holdingnut 18. It will thus be seen, that, dependingupon which of the disc clutches 55, 51 is applied, the adjusting nuts may be rotated in onejdirection'or the other to Vmove the radjusting screws 14` and 15 upwardly or downwardly, as desired, and as a result, the ad-r justable frame'Y member 28 upon which the kerf "cutteris swiveled, may be adjusted in a vertical direction relative to the vcutter frame section I9 toniove4 the kerf cutter intodiiferent horizontal planes.n It willbe notedthat as the adjustable frame supporting the kerf cutter is 'movedin a vertical direction relative to the cutter frame sectionV I9 the splinedshafts 3|"and 51 move axially within the "shaft 2li andthe `hub of worm wheel 54, respectively, the shafts -sliding freely relative to their cooperative parts as lthe frame moves. l y r e Themeans for guiding the adjustable kerf cut-` ter supporting frame 28 during adjustment thereof relative to the cutter fra-me section `I9 herein comprises parallel vertical guide rods 19, 19 eachy secured at its upper end by a screw and nut con nection V|30 within a bore 8| formed in a lateral "boss 82 integral with the adjustable frame member 28;,'1These parallel guide rods 1B are ,telescopically arranged and guided within vertically adjustable guide Vsleeves 83, `83 slidably arranged in vertical lbores 85. formed in thecutter frame section I9. Secured transversely within the lower ends of the guide rods are stop pins v85 movable in vertical slots 86 'formedY in `the hollow sleeves After the pins 85 Amove their distance of travel within the slots86 andthe projecting ends of the pins engage the upperends of the slots,
Vthe sleeves 83 then move with the guide rods, and
vertical movement of the sleeves is limited by stop screws 81 having their ends likewise vprojecting within the vertical slots 86; It will thus be seen that the guide rods 19 and-the guide sleeves 83 form a telescopic or extensible guiding arrangement for the adjustable kerf cutter supporting frameZS. 'Y l The improved means for controlling the various controlling clutches heretofore described, will now he described. As shown inFig. 3, engaging the-.sliding clutchmernber 26 is a pivoted shipper yoke 88in the form of a bell crankhaving an upst'anding bifurcated arm 89 engaging a trunnion yoke 9B mounted in aV groove 9| formed in meansl andthe top surface of- ;said imotcr, :and means operable .whollyzindependently of the feeding means forswingingisaidkerf cutterirelative to saidframe.
