UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. HARBAUGH, OF BELLEFONTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlPE-TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,539, dat d January 2, 1873; app ti l August 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, GEORGE A. HARBAUGH, of Bellefonte, in the county of Centre and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Pipe-Tongs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a sectional plan view of my pipe-tongs, and Fig. 2 is a detail thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a pair'of pipe-tongs, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A and B represent the handles, formed, re-
, spectively, with the bit-jaw O and hook- D.
The jaw O has on its inner side an offset at a, with a circular recess, 1), as shown, to receive a pawl-bit, G, capable of turning slightly in the circular recess.
The object of using such bit is for the protection of the sharp edge in its backward movement while using. It tips slightly forward in the back movement of the tongs, and is always held in position for a fresh gripe on the pipe by the action of a light spring, 01, resting upon the front of it. This spring is fastened on the front of the jaw G, and passes through a slot inthe end thereof to bear on the bit. a
The two parts of the pipe-tongs are pivoted together by means of a bolt, E, which passes through an elongated slot, 6, inthe handle B. Around this slot, on the outside of the handle, is a metal plate, It, having a series of holes or slots, 43 i, on both sides of the slot c. On the end of the bolt E is placed a metal plate or washer, J, having two studs, .1: w, to enter the slots i in the plate h, and a nut, I, is then screwed on the end of the bolt to fasten the parts together.
It will readily be seen that the two jaws of the tongs can easily and quickly be adjusted to suit any sized pipe by loosening the nut I and placing the studs w of the washer J in other slots in the plate h. These studs may be placed in the slots or notches squarely across the bolt-slot, or be placed diagonally and followed by the nut I, and the parts thus held into any required position.
Below the washer J, surrounding the bolt E, is a spiral spring, m, which raises the washer as soon as the nut I is loosened.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In pipe-tongs, the combination of the handle A, bolt E, handle B, with slot 6, plate h, with notches 'i, the washer J, with studs 00, and the nut I, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. HARBAUGH.
Witnesses H. Y. STITZER, WM. NEwooMER.
