In Morocco July 28, 1933 5 Claims. (Cl. 220-24) rIhis invention relates to a closing device for any applications, but more particularly utilizable as caps for radiators, gasoline tanks, crank open ings or the like. f
' A iirst object of the invention consistsin providing a closing device such as a radiator cap which cannot become accidentally detached through the trepidations of the vehicle during` running, and cannot be lost, even when the user dees not replace it in position.
A second object of the invention consists in providing adevice such as mascot cap for radiators, which cannot be removed by a nonauthorized personv and, consequently cannot be stolen.
A third object of the invention consists in providing a device such as a cap for gasoline tanks, which cannot be removed by a nonauthorized persen so as to prevent theft of fuel or the addition, in the latter, of foreign substances (sugar, water, grease or the like).
The closing device according to the invention ismainly characterized bythe combination, with a cap pivoted, particularly through the medium ofA a hinge, on asupport, of a member movably mounted on the cap and capable, in closing position of the cap, to come transversely in position vice, a safety device.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description, with reference to theV accompanying drawings, given by way ofexample only and in which:

Various forms of construction of a closing device have'been shown by way of example only.
vThese forms of construction are more particu- Vlarly adapted. to constitute caps for radiators or is indicated by the reference number 1; vvit has' preferably the general shape of a spherical member and is pivoted, through the medium of va hinge 2, on a main support 3 having a cylindrical part 4. In the case shown in Figs. Y1 andV 2, v
the support 3 forms a part of the spherical mem'- ber ci the cap 1 and completes the latter in: closed position. In the other figures, the cylindrical part 4 of the support is provided with a flange 5.
In the form or" construction more. particularly illustrated in Figs. 3 to 6, the main support 3 is provided, at right angles to the hinge 2 withvanarm 6 forming an extension of said support.
A blade '7, preferably resiliently distortable and' fitting on the outer surface. in the shape of a spherical member of Ythe cap 1,.is rigid with a member 8 so devised as to fcrmftwo arms 9 and 10 arranged in alignment with eachother. The unit, constituted by the blade 7 andmem'- ber 8, is fitted on the cap 1, at 11, so that it can be angularly moved. f
Sonie elements of the hinge 2 areV integral with the cap 1 and the other elements are rigid with the support 3, the pivotal movement taking place about a pin, as usual.
The arm 9, which preferably constitutes the i gripping and operating member, is so devised as' to form at support for a mascot or any suitable decorative design, and said arm 9 can be directly formed for constituting said decorative de- Sign.
In the arm 10 is mounted a knife edge 12, or this arm 10 is so devised, at its lower part, as to present a portion 13 in the shape of a knife edge.
In closed position, the knife 12 enters a groove 14 provided in the arm 6, this arm being moreover stopped in one direction by an abutment 15 rigid with this arm and laterally bounding, on one side, the groove 14. In this closed position, the arm 10 is placed at right angles vto the hinge 2 and prevents the cap 'being opened. For opening this cap, the arm 9 or arm 10 is acted upon in the only direction allowed, owing to the presence of the abutment 15, in order to bring the unit, constituted by the blade 7 and arms 9 and 10, in the position particularly illustrated in Fig. 4; the cap l thus released can be removed.
As more particularly illustrated in Fig. 5, the support 3 is fitted over the neck 16 of the radiator and it is secured thereon in any suitable manner. An additional fastening can be effected by means oi a screw 17 screwed in the arm 6. It will be noted that the bottom of the groove 14 is located at such a level, that the arm 10, in closed position, receives an upward vertical thrust ensuring the cap being 4applied in position under pressure.
In closed position, the knife edge 12 is therefor held under pressure in the groove 14, and the cap is held under pressure in closed position, so that no accidental opening can occur when the vehicle is running.
Under the spherical member 1 of the cap (Fig. 5) is arranged a packing 18 which enters the cylinder 4. of the support and rests upon the edge of the neck 16 of the radiator. This packing is secured by means oi a screw-threaded part 11 and of a nut 19, with interposition of a ring and of a cup member 2U. The nut 19 can be held in position by means of 4a pin.
This closing device can be very rapidly operated, and it can be integral with the bonnet.
Y In the form of construction illustrated inFigs. 1 and 2, the knife edge 12 diametrally extends throughout the width of the cap. The abutment 15 is much larger in order to allow of providing therein a perforation 21 in which, inclosed position, can be inserted a padlock also passing through a perforation 22 provided in the knife edge 12.
In this form of construction, the movable operating and locking member is not larger than the cap owing to the arrangement ofthe hinge 2. This cap is more particularly adapted to constitute a closure for a gasoline tank.
Figs. 7 and 8 `illustrate a modication of Fig. 5. In this modication, the spring 7 or the arm 9 are so formed as to constitute a hook 23 which, upon closing, comes under the flange 5,
Y owing to a notch 24 provided for that purpose in said flange. This hook is adapted to prevent the water pressure of the radiator from slightly lifting the cap; moreover, the closure is of greater duid-tightness.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a closing device for any applications, the combination, with a cap pivoted, through a hinge, on a support, oi a member mounted on said cap in order to be movable relatively to the latter so that it can be placed transversely to said of said support on the same side as the hinge 1 relatively to the cap, for holding said cap stationary in said closed position.
3. In a closing device such as a cap for radiators and gasoline tanks, the combination, with a spherical member constituting a cap, of a unit constituted by a resilient blade curved according to the shape of the spherical member and arms arranged in alignment with each other, this unit being centrally journalled on the spherical member, of a hinge through which said spherical member is pivoted on the support, this support terminating in an arm on the side of said hinge, and said arm being provided with a radial groove and an abutment, so that, in closed position of the cap, it is possible to angularly move said movable unit in order to bring the lower part, in the shape of a knife edge, of one of said arms into said groove for holding the unit stationary in closed position and exerting a pressure holding said cap in closed position.
4. In a closing device such as a cap for radiators and gasoline tanks, the combination, with a spherical member constituting a cap, and laterally cut away according to a plane, a support having a portion in the shape of a spherical member and completing the corresponding portion of the cap, of a hinge for pivoting the cap on said corresponding portion Aof the support so that, in closed position, the unit constitutes a complete spherical member, of a member axially journalled on the cap and diametrally arranged throughout the width of this cap, of an abutment on the spherical portion of the support, so that, in closed position, said journalled member can press against said abutment and thus be placed transversely to the hinge for locking the cap, said abutment and said journalled member being provided with corresponding holes,
and locking means, such as a padlock, inserted in said holes for constituting a safety device in closed position.
5. In a closing device as claimed in claim 3, the arm, opposed to the arm having a portion in the shape of a knife edge, is devised for constituting a hook which, in closed position, comes under a corresponding portion of said support which is cut away for that purpose.
