IMPROVEMENT IN TOBA COO-DRYING MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,367, dated January 22, 1878; application filed July 30, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. ISAACS, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Centrifugal Drying- Machines, which invention is fully set forth and described in the following specification and accompanying drawing.

In the said drawing, Figure l is a perspecimproved machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the center of the machine between the disks.

My invention is designed for expelling the surplus moisture from the bunches or hands of tobacco, as they are termed, as a rapid and more effective mode of drying than by the present hand method.

In order to allow the leaves to be properly worked and handled, they are immersed in wa ter, and the excess of moisture is then expelled from the bunches by swinging them in the air, the operator holding one in each hand; but this method is slow and imperfect, and only a limited number of bunches or hands can be treated in a day by one man.

The object of my invention is to produce a machine capable of receiving and drying several bunches at once 5 and to this end I construct a wheel or drum of two disks, with a series of bars or rods between them,upon which the bunches or hands are hung or suspended, and this drum I mount upon a suitable shaft or axis, to which rotation-is given by hand or other power, as will be more fully shown and described hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawing, A A represent two disks, which are properly secured upon a shaft or axis, a, supported in bearings B B. Between these two disks are arranged a number of rods or bars around the axis, and upon these rods the hands or bunches X, Fig. 2, are fixed or suspended. The shaft is provided with a crank for giving a rotary motion to the disks A A; or a pulley may be secured to the shaft, if desired, to drive the machine by power.

The rods or bars should be removable at pleasure, to allow the hands or bunches to be strung or suspended on them, and they should be placed at a suitable distance apart to allow the bunches to receive the most thorough action of the centrifugal force or effect as the machine revolves, and so as not to interfere with each other, that the drying may take place more rapidly.

With my machine as thus constructed a large number of hands or bunches can be Wet and treated in a day by one operator in abetter manner than by the present method, and a great saving in labor is thereby effected.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The hereinbefore-described centrifugal drying-machine, consisting of the drum A A, mounted upon a suitable shaft or axis, a, and having a series of rods or bars, C 0, arranged around the axis between the disks of the drum at a distance apart from each other, con structed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
