Patented Mar. 5, 17935 PUIVIP Daniel Scholespak'lark, Ill., assignor to` Y Aermojtor CompanmChicago, Ill.,la' corporation of Illinois App'licatin July 27,1931, serial No. 553,284, 3 Claims.A (o1. l10a-21s) VThis invention relates to pumps preferably for `use in pumping from -wells or the like. Y
In devices of this natureitisA oftentimes desirable to have the pumping mechanism so' arranged as toV operate a pump at or abovethe frost line, and at other times to'operate a'pump located below the frost line. In accordance with fthe present invention the power casing is so arranged that it may be connected with a pump locatedeither-'above the frostline or below the same,V and with the expenditure of very little time. A further object of the invention is to provide a pump operating means so arranged that it may be easily and quickly connected with the pump regardless of whether the latter be a ysurface pump or a deep well pump.l Y
Another object of the invention is to provide a power head casing with lugs having both lvertical and horizontal seats, to either of which. pump supporting means may be secured as desired.
Other objects, advantages and capabilities will later more fully appear.
My invention further resides in the combination; construction andv arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have shown therein a preferred embodiment I wish it to be understood that the same is susceptible of modincation and change without departing from the spirit of my invention. 30 In the drawingsr- Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a pump mechanism embodying my invention, parts being broken away for the sake of convenience.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the pump mechaf nism shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the lower portion of the driving mechanism housing showing the attaching lugs with drop pipes secured thereto. 4 Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3 with the drop pipes and their securing means .y omitted, but
showing the bolts in position for securing` theV pump head to the underneath horizontal faces or seats of the lugs. l 45 Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the pumping mechanism embodying my invention, but showing the pump head `secured directly to the horizontal seatsof the attaching lugs without the use ofV drop pipes.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary front elevation of the lower front portion of the driving mechanism housing, showing the pump head secured to the attaching lugs in the manner of Fig.Y 5.
Fig. 7 is an inverted perspective view showing the bottom portions of the attaching lugs and adjacent portions of the driving rmechanism housing.v 1
Referring in detail to the drawings, the driving mechanism vhousing 1 may be of any type desired, but forconvenience is shown as being of V5 the type and construction disclosed in my copending application Ser. No. 509,740. `As the Y specific construction ofthe driving mechanism housing, or power Vhead and driving mechanismV contained therein, forms no part .of thewpresent 10 invention the same will not bev describedink detail, except to state that through'.themediumofV suitable mechanism the connecting rods 2 are given a vertical reciprocation, which reciprocation is transmitted'to thecrosshead secured 15 to the connecting rods 2, the cross-head 3carryv ing lug 4, to which issecured for reciprocation with cross-head 3 the upper end of a rod 5operating in an air pump 6, used Vin a conventional manner in connection with the main pump. 1 V20 When .my invention is usedr for supporting `a pump head below the frost line, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the 'air 'pumpj is provided with .suitable and vapprupriate means for cooperation'with the pump in the well-known manner. The pump head 7 having'the usual water chamber a, and other associated parts, is supported by drop pipes 8 and 9, which in turn are attached to the lugs 10 and 11, which' lugs are preferably V(though notv necessarily) integral with the driving mechanism housing or power head 1, these lugs being formed as shown in Figs. l3 and 4 with arcuate seats Yor faces 12 and 1S, and asrshown in Fig. 7 with horizontal faces lor seats 14 and 15.
When these lugs are to be used for attaching to the housing 1 a pump head to be positioned a substantial distance below the housing 1, drop pipes 8 and 9 will be seated in the arcuate seats l2 and 13, as shown, and tightly clamped therein by means of U-bolts 16 and 17, which U-bolts 40 lare tightened in place by means of nuts 18. Drop pipes 8 and 9 will be preferably hollow and of construction generally understood in the art, and carrying at their lower end thev pump head 7, as shown'in Figs. 1 and 2.v 45
Depending from pump head 'l is the customary well pipe 19, withinY whichroperates the main pump rod 2o, this pump rod being reciprocatedV by rod 21, which in turn is 'given a vertical reciprocation by cross-head 3, to which it is attached. In a manner well understood in the art cross'- head 3 maybe reciprocated either through the medium of the mechanism within the housing lor directly from a windmill by suitable connection therewith through rod 22, shown in Fig. 5. Also secured to pump head 7 .is the-discharge pipe 23 and other appropriate parts. K
When, however, it is desired to attach the pump head adjacent to the housing 1, the drop pipes 8 and 9 may be omitted and the pump head secured directly to the casing 1 .by bringing the horizontal faces 24 of the pump Vhead into seating engagement with the horizontal seats.,14 and 15 of lugs 10 and 11, and securing the same thereagainst by means ofbolts 25.V When thus connected the pump head includes the discharge head 26, the well pipe 27, the main pump rod 28, and
cap 29, to which latter is connected the air pump' 1 6. Also connected with the pump head is the usual packing tubel 30, in which Athe pump rod.V
22 is connected with the main pump rod 28 of the pump.
All that is necessary to be done todisconnect the pump head shown in Fig. 5 from casing lis to remove bolts 25, and when such'removal is effected and the pump head taken away the drop pipes 8 and 9 of a deep well pump, or other pump located below the. frost line, may be quickly and readily positioned within the arcuate seats 12 and 13', and rigidly secured thereto by U-bolts 16 Yand 17. y
Y It isthusseen that in the present invention I have'. provided means for selectively securing to the driving mechanism housing or power head l either an-anti-freezing pump (pump head 4to be positioned below thefrost line) kor a pumpY in which the pump head is secured directly to -the housing or power head 1, this changey being effected with the expenditure of a minimum amount of time and labor. This greatly increases the eld of usefulness of the powerhead by enabling 'it to be quickly and easily attached'to the different types of pumps referred to,'and also enables the -quick and ready detachment of the pumpv from the power head for removal of the pump, or other purposes.
Y,Havi'ngthus disclosed myv invention, I claim:
1. In mechanism of the character described in combination, a driving mechanism housing, lugs formed on said housing, said lugs having vertical arcuate seats and horizontal openings, a U- bolt extendingthrough said openings, a drop-V pipe seated in each of said arcuate seats and clamped therein by a yU-bolt, said drop-pipes being adapted to support a pump head below the frost line, said lugs each also having a horizontal seat adapted to have a pump head secured thereto when it is desired to support the latter above the frost line, said lugs each also having a vertical opening adapted to receive a bolt for securing the vpump head to the horizontal seat.
Y secured thereto by a bolt passing through each of said vertical openings withl the pump head positioned above the frost line. c
3. In mechanism of the character described in combination, a driving Vmechanism housing, a pair of lugs formed on said housing, said lugs each having ai vertical seat and a horizontal opening with a bolt extending through said opening, a pump supporting part securely fastened against each of said vertical seats by said bolts to support va pump. head below the frost line, said lugs each also having formed on its bottom portion a horizontal seat and a vertical opening, said horizontal seats being adapted to have a pump head secured thereto by a bolt passing through each of 'saidvertical openings with the pump head positioned above the frost line, said vertical seats and their respective bolts permitting vertical adjustment of said pump supporting parts.
