Feb. 19, 1935. J. c. sTUBB's MEANS FOR RELIEVING PRESSURE ON TOP ROLLS 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed NOV. l0, 1933 MN km JAMES C. .5 T0565 Patented Feb. 19, 1935 t y MEANS FoaaELIEvING PRESSURE oN 1.
Tor nousr James C. Stubbs, Rockingham, ',N. C. Y Application November 10, 193.3,` Seria 1-No.L697;4ii5-. l1V claim. f (o1. 194136) UNITED STATES PAT ENT ,OFFICE This invention relates to means for relieving to rest on the rolls 12 when theyarn is passed the pressure on the top rolls of spinning frames, therebetween for drawing purposes. These top drawing frames, slubbers, intermediates, and in rolls are supported for rotation in members 14 fact all types of machinery for preparation or pivoted on rod 15 and saddles 16 and 1'? apply yarn in strand form in which the sliver or strand pressure to the top rolls, the pressure being de- 5 is passed through a series of drawing rolls. rived through a stirrup 18, a lever 19 engaging Heretofore, attempts have been made to proa lever hook 20 at one end and a link 21 being vide such a mechanism, but on account of the adjustablyv mounted on the other and penetratc fact that the prevailing type of frame has a broad ing the roll stand supporting rail and having l0 roll stand supporting board or member, there is a weight 22 on the lower end thereof, though in l0 only avery small space left between the pressure some instances a spring is used instead of a levers and the roll stand supporting board, thus weight. Y rendering the placing of a rod with cams there- In any event there is a constant downward on impracticable. I have solved the difficulty byV pressure exerted on the top rolls 13 by means l5 placing between the roll stand supporting member of the weight `22 or a spring if the spring is used 15 and the levers a flat elongated member which lies instead of a weight. This means that when the fiat on the top surface of the roll stand support machinery is standing idle, that the portions of when not in use and which is pvoted along one the toprolls pressing against the bottom rolls edge thereof, so that when it occupies a substanwill become flattened or scarred on account 0I tially vertical position it elevates the levers and remaining in this one place for an appreciable 20 relieves the pressure from the top rolls. length of time and it is an object of this inven- It is Well known, that on account of the fact tion to provide means whereby this pressure can that the bottom rolls are of steel and have bosses be released when the machine is not in operation. thereon which are fluted, and as the top rolls are On account of the small amount of space Y leather covered, cork covered and the like, that which appears between the levers 19 and the roll 25 when the machines remain idle for an apprestand supporting beam' 10 it is evident that`a rod ciable length of time, the leather or cork top rolls with cams thereon could not be used on account will have iiat places or furrows impressed therein of lack of space. I therefore, provide, usually which damages the rolls and causes them to' be two elongated flattened bars 25 and 26 which relegated to the repair shop for recovering. have holes bored therethrough along one edge 30 It is an object of this invention to provide one thereof which are penetrated by U-bolts 27, which or more flat bars between the levers and the roll pivotally mount these bars 25 and 26 at one edge stand board, with a lever thereon for operating thereof. I also secure to each of the bars 25 and the same, which lever acts as a stop for the bars 26 an arm or lever 28 or 29, not only for manipwhen they have passed dead center and holds ulating the bars 25 and 26 but also for holding 35 them in elevated position. these bars in adjusted position, as it is evident Some of the objects of the invention having that when the bars are raised to their operative been stated, details of the same will appear more position, as shown in the left hand portion of fully when taken in connection with the detailed Figure 1 and in Figure 2, that these levers 28 description hereinafter following, when read lin or 29 serve to limit the counter clock-wise move- 40 view of the accompanying drawings, in whichment of the bars as shown in Figure 2 and holds Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a drawing frame the bars in elevated position because they have and the like showing my invention applied passed their dead center and therefore these lethereto; y vers 28 and 29, not only serve the purpose of oper- Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken along ating the flat bars 25 and 26, but also hold them the line 2--2 in Figure 1; Y y in elevated position.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken along Another advantage of this arrangement is that the line 3-3 in Figure 1. when the bars 25 and 26 are not in operative po- Referring more speciiically to the drawings the sition they lie flat on the top surface of the roll numeral 10 indicates the roll stand supporting stand supporting rail 10 and are therefore not in 50 beam having mounted thereon a plurality of roll position to catch lint and are also out of the way stands 11, the roll stands supporting a plurality in case a brush or any other cleaning instrument of steel rolls 12 and a plurality of top rolls 13 is desired to be used. Furthermore, in mechanwhich are usually covered with a composition ical cleaners which are traversed above the masuch as leather, cork and the like and adapted chinery, it is seen that these bars lying flat oer no resistance to the air drafts which are directed downwardly onto the machinery while they are in the inoperative position.
This inoperative position is shown in the right hand portion of Figure 1 and in Figure 3, and when the machines are stopped over-night, or for an appreciable length of time, the operator moves the levers 28 and 29 to the position shown in the left hand portionof Figure 1 and in Figure 2, and thus the pressure on the top rolls is removed, and the life of the top rolls is greatly extended.
In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and although specic terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptiveV sense only, and not for purposes ofY limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the appended claim.
I claim:
In ber preparation machinery having a. roll stand supporting board andl top rolls and levers for applying pressure tothe top rolls, a, at bnr extending beneath a plurality of said levers and disposed between the roll stand supporting board and the levers and normally out of contact with the levers and occupying a plane parallel to the upper surface of the roll stand 'supporting board, means pivotally connecting one edge of the Het bar to the roll stand supporting board, an arm secured near the upper edge of the at bar and normally occupying a vertical plane when pressure is applied to the roll, the free end of the arm engaging the top surface of the roll stand supporting board when the flat bar is moved on its pivot past its dead center to elevate the levers,
the pressure on the-levers holding the end o! the arm against the roll stand supporting board.
