Description

Jan. 29, 1935. J. c. .CROCKER 1,989,587
FILLING FEELER FOR LOOMS Filed Sept. 6, 1953 INVENTOR ATTOR N EY Patented Jan. 29, 1935 UNITED STATES, PATENT OFFICE John C. Crocker, Ware Shoals, S. 0.
Application September 6, 1933, Serial No. 688,407
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a feeler for a loom of the character having an electrically actuated bobbin replacing magazine and has for the primary object the provision of means for controlling the circuit of said magazine and adapted to set the latter in operation when the thread of an operating bobbin becomes exhausted so that the bobbin may be replaced by another bobbin fully wound with thread.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention,
reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view, partly in section, illustrating my attachment associated with a bobbin and carried by the frame of a loom.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the attachment occupying a position to close the circuit of the bobbin replacing magazine of the loom.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the attachment.
Figure 4 is a plan view illustrating the same. Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of a conventional type of bobbin carried by a shuttle wherein the thread of said bobbin is indicated by the character 2. During the operation of the shuttle in the loom, the feeler rides against the thread 2 and the feeler is slidably supported by a box 4 mounted on the frame 5 of the loom. The feeler is urged towards the thread by a spring 6. The feeler is in the form of a rod 7 slidably mounted in the box with one end of the spring 6 connected thereto while the opposite end of the rod is bent to form a contact head 8 adapted to ride upon the thread of the bobbin. A contact block 9 of insulated material is adjustably mounted upon the rod 7 adjacent the head and carries contacts 10 and 11. 5
Said contacts are electrically connected in the circuit of the bobbin replacing magazine of the loom and the contact 10 is normally spaced from the contact 11 to interrupt the circuit. As the thread in the bobbin nears exhaustion, the con- 10 tact 10 comes in engagement with the sides of the shuttle and due to the influence of the spring 6 and the movement allowed by the rod '7, the contact 10 is flexed in engagement with the contact 11 completing the circuit to the magazine so that 15 the bobbin in use will be replaced by a bobbin fully wound wih thread. v
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combi- 20 nation and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A feeler for looms comprising a box, a rod slid- 25 ably supported by said box, a head on the end of the rod to contact with the wound thread of a bobbin, a spring between the box and rod to urge the head in engagement with the thread, a block adjustably secured to the rod adjacent the head, 30 and circuit controlling contacts carried by the block and normally spaced from each other and engaged with each other by one of the contacts engaging a shuttle on the exhaustion of the thread from the bobbin. 35
