My invention relates to garment or ironing presses, and particularly to pneumatically actuated presses of the two hand control type in which full pressing power cannot be applied unless the operator employs both hands to actuate the press to closed position. Thus the operator cannot have the hands injured under the full pressing power of the press.
Ina press of this type it is my object to provide improvements in the simplicity and cheapness of construction, with increased effectiveness and ease of manipulation of the press. Another object is to provide a toggle construction in which there are two toggles, one of which, when it arrives at a dead center position has so straightened out the connecting toggle that pressure on the second toggle is transmitted to a spring which stores up the energy, applying it to the head after the hydraulic power of themotor has been exhausted.
Another object is the provision of improvements in control systems, requiring both hands to close the press, which will have release controls remotely located so that the operator can apply full pressing power to a press, leave the press,
' work on another press, and then open the first press prior to the return to it. This enables considerable saving in time and increases the output of the operator.
A still further object of my invention is to provide improvements in lever actuating devices which lock on dead center only when the head has had full pressure applied to it, and in combination with such a leverage system it is my object to provide controls which automatically release pneumatic pressure from the pressure cylinders while leaving the press mechanically locked.
Another object is the use of double pistons having isolated supplies and exhausts which makes locking of one starting button impossible. Further the provision of double pistons in a straight line provides an arrangement in which if one piston is advanced the pressing head is far enough closed to prevent the danger of someone accldentally getting caught in'the press.
The above and other objects to which reference will be made in .the ensuing disclosure I accomplish by that certain combination and. arrangement of parts of which I have shown a preferred modification.

Mounted on a suitable frame 1, I have shown a lower press jaw or buck 2 which will be heated and have steam lines connected to it in the usual manner. The upper press jaw or press head 3 is mounted on a rocker arm or press lever 4 which is pivoted in the machine frame as indicated at 5.
The mechanism for actuating the press is provided by a fluid pressure cylinder 6 having a divisional compartment wall 7 which divides the cylinder into an upper cylinder 8 and a lower cylinder 9. The piston 10 in the upper cylinder is mounted on a piston rod 11 pivoted in the machine frame as indicated at 12. The piston 13 in the lower cylinder is mounted on a piston rod 14 pivoted at 15 to a lever 16 or other suitable lever. The lever 16 is pivoted in the machine frame as indicated at 17. The short arm 18 of the lever 16 is pivoted to a link 19 as shown at 20.
The link 19 is connected to and pivoted in a boss 21 as indicated at 22. A link housing 23 is pivoted at 24 in the machine frame. The housing has a yoke 25 which provides a slidable journal for a link 26 which extends beyond the pivot point 24 and has an adjustment nut 27 which controls the tension of a compression spring 28 which bears against a collar 29 mounted on the link 26. The movement of the link 19 presses outwardly on the link housing 23. This movement compresses the spring 28 against the collar 29 and pushes up on the link 26.
The upper end of the -link 26 is pivoted to another link 30 which connects and is pivoted in 'the rocker arm 4 as indicated at 31. The link 30 may, as shown, be a composite link having an adjustment wheel 32, which, through a turnbuckle connection 33, of a type such as is shown in the Deckert Patent No. 1,542,341 may be used for varying the length of the link 30 to regulate or vary the pressure between the press jaws when closed.
, In Figure 2 I have shown a diagram of the preferred control system. The compartment wall '7 in the pressure motor has two ports extending therethrough, an upper port 34 supplying air to the upper cylinder, and a lower port-35 supplying compressed fluid to the lower cylinder. The compressed fluid has its intake and exhaust into the cylinder through the same ports.
The control valves have housings 36 ,into the compression chambers 37 of which compressed fluid is introduced through the ports 38 from the supply pipe 39. Extending into an exhaust chamber 40 in each valve is a rod 41 ch is connected with the exhaust valve disc 42. The exhaust disc is connected by a rod 43 with the intake' valve disc 44, and a spring 45 normally urges the intake valve disc toward closed position.
The control buttons may be of any desired type. I have shown a button 46 which presses against a bell crank 47 pivoted at 48. The short arm of the bell crank presses against the rod 41 and a spring 49 presses against the long arm of the bell crank to prevent the control-button from holding the valve open. When a control button or both buttons are pressed the disc 42 is seated against the exhaust port 50 and the disc 44 is raised from the intake port 51. During such a position of the control, compressed fluid passes from the supply line 3a thru the ports in the two cylinders. When a control button is released the intake port is closed by the disc 44 and the exhaust disc 42 is unseated allowing compressed fluid to exhaust itself from the cylinder through the exhaust chamber 40 which is open to the air.
Each of the control valves, which we may refer to as controls A, B, C and D, is similarly constructed, although there may be variation in construction without departing from the principle of my invention.
For breaking the dead center position of the lever actuating mechanism, as is indicated in dotted lines, I have provided a three-way valve having a housing 52. Within the housing are intake ports 53 and 54, the port 53 connecting to the control valve C and the port 54 connecting with a remotely located control valve D which will normally be on an adjacent press. There is a disc 55 in the housing 52 which normally seats against the seat 56 of the port 54. When pressure is introduced through the port 54 a needle valve 57, which is attached to the disc 55, seals the intake port 53 and allows pressure to pass through the pipe 58 into the lower cylinder 9 and opens the press. The compressed fluid passes from the valve chamber 52 through a pipe 59 into the port 60 in the lower head of the fluid pressure motor and pushes the piston 13 in the lower chamber up, or in a press opening direction, so as to break the dead center position of the lever actuating mechanism. The control valve is used to effect the breaking and opening up of the press after a pressing operation is completed and is normally located on the press having the controls A and B on it. v 4
The valve mechanism in the housing 52 provides means for closing one of the connections to the other end or chamber 9 or the cylinder 0 controlled by the port 53 or 54 while leaving the other port or connection open. This means is required since the valves C and D are normally in exhaust position and if one of the valves, such as the valve C, were opened to admit pressure fluid into the chamber 9, this pressure would exhaust through the exhaust port of the other valve were opened. The valve means in the housing 52 is provided to prevent such exhaust of the pressure, admitted by one press opening valve, through the exhaust of the other press opening valve.
The press will normally be operated by pushing down the 2-hand controls A and B. The movement of both the pistons 10 and 13 pushes down on the lever 16 until the toggle parts are in the dead center position indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1. The toggle links 18 and 19 straighten first and by the time they are straight the toggle links 26 and 30 have straightened out sufliciently so that the power is transmitted to the spring or valve D. The same would occur if valve D 28 which in turn applies the pressure to the pressing head after the hydraulic pressure is exhausted from the motor means 6. An adjustable stop 61 prevents the links and levers from passing the dead center position.
Usually the operator will then release controls A and B after he has closed one press and will then move to another press. When the controls are released the.compressed fluid will exhaust itself from the pneumatic motor through the exhaust ports 50 in the two valves A and 13. Be-- fore returning to the first press the operator presses control D at the second press which breaks the locked position of the levers of said first press and causes saidfirst press to open and be ready for use when the operator returns from the second to the first press.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A garment or ironing press having a frame and comprising coacting press jaws, motor means connected to one jaw to close the press including two cylinders, a piston in each cylinder and one piston connected to the frame and the other piston being operatively connected with the press jaw aforesaid, a normally closed intake and open exhaust valve for each cylinder thereby providing a two-hand control means to close the press, a valve housing having a normally open exhaust connected at all times with the housing, a third intake valve on the press connected with the valve housing, a fourth control valve also connected with the valve housing, said fourth valve adapted to be mounted on an independent press whereby the aforesaid press can be opened from the independent press, a valve within the valve housing, and a pressure feed line between the valve housing and a cylinder upon the opposite side of the piston therein to drive the piston in a press opening direction, valve means including said last mentioned valve closing the normally open exhaust for the valve housing when one of said third or fourth valves is opened to direct pressure hehind the piston to open the press.
2. A garment or'ironing press comprising coacting press jaws, motor means operatively connected to one jaw to open and close'the press, including a fluid pressure cylinder and piston means, a control valve and pressure supply conduit connected with one end of the cylinder to admit pressure to drive the piston in one direction to close the press, a control valve means having an intake and a normally open exhaust, said control valve means being connected with the'other end of the cylinder to admit pressure to drive the piston in a press opening direction, a pressure inlet valve having an intake and anormally open exhaust, said pressure inlet valve being connected with the same end ofthe cylinder as the control valve means to admit pressure'to drive the piston in a press opening direction and means closing one of the connections to said other end of the cylinder when the valve in the other connection is opened to admit pressure to the cylinder.
3. A garment or.ironing press comprising coacting press jaws, motor means operatively connected to one jaw to open and close the press, including a fluid pressure cylinder and piston means, a control valve andpressure supply conduit -connected with one end of the cylinder to admit pressure to drive the piston. in one direction to close the press, remote control valve means having a normally open exhaust, the remote control valve means beingconnected with the other end mama-4' of the cylind'r to admit pressure to drive the piston in a, press opening direction, a pressure inlet valve having a normally open exhaust and connected with the other end of the cylinder to admit pressure to drive the piston in a press opening direction, and a valve in both connections to said other end of'the cylinder normally closing one connection and holding openthe other connection, the valve opening the closed connection and closing the open connection upon actuation of the valve in the closed connection.
4. A garment or ironing press comprising coacting press jaws, motor means operatively connected to one jaw to open and close the press, including a fluid pressure cylinder and piston means, a control valve and pressure supply conduit connected with one end of the cylinder to admit pressure to drive the piston in one direction to close the press, a valve housing, remote control valve means having a normally open exhaust and connected with one end of the valve housing to admit fluid pressure thereto, a pressure inlet valve means having a normally open exhaust and connected with the other end of the valve housing, a valve in the housing normally closing one of the connections and operable by fluid pressure upon opening of the valve means in the closed connection to open the closed connection and close the open connection, and a fluid connection between the valve housing and the other end of the cylinder.
5. A garment or ironing press having a frame and comprising coacting press jaws, motor means connected to one jaw to'close the press including 7 two cylinders, a piston in each'cylinder and one piston connected to the frame and the other piston being operatively connected with the press jaw aforesaid, a normally closed intake and open exhaust valve for each cylinder thereby providing a two-hand control means to close the press, a third intake valve on the press. a fourth intake valve adapted to be mounted on; an independent press, said third and fourth intake valves being connected to a cylinder upon the opposite side of the piston therein to drive the same in a press opening direction, a normally open exhaust connected at all times to the cylinder and upon the same side of the piston therein as the third and fourth valves, and valve means closing the open exhaust when one of the third or fourth intake valves is opened to direct pressure behind the piston to open the press.

A garment or ironing press having a frame and comprising coacting press jaws, motor means connected to one jaw to close the press including two cylinders, a piston in each cylinder and one piston connected to' the frame and the other piston being operatively connected with the press jaw aforesaid, a normally closed intake and open exhaust valve for each cylinder thereby providing a two-hand control means to close the press, a valve housing, a third intake and exhaust valve on the press connected with the valve housing, a fourth intake andv exhaust valve also connected with the valve housing, said fourth valve adapted to be mounted on an independent press whereby the aforesaid press can be opened from the independent press, a valve within the valve housing, a pressure feed line between the last mentioned valve and a cylinder upon the'opposite side of the piston therein to drive the piston in a press opening direction, and valve means including said last mentioned valve closing the connection to the valve housing from one of said third or fourth .valves when the other of said third or fourth valves is opened to direct pressure behind the piston to open the press.
7. A garment or ironing press comprising coacting press jaws, motor means operatively connected to one jaw to close the press including a fluid pressure cylinder and piston means, control valve means connected with one end of the cylinder to control the closing of the press, said valve means including a normally closed intake 'valve and a normally openexhaust val've, a third intake valve on the press, a fourth intake valve.
