CUP HANDLE Filed Aug. ll, 1934 I n'qento'r Attorney Patented Jan. 8, 1935 UNITED ,STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to paper cups and more particularly to a handle therefor.
An object of the present invention is to pro vide a handle which'may be so associated with a paper cup as to fold therewith to permit vending of the cup and handle as a unitary structure.
1 A'further object of the inventionis to provide a handle of destructible material which can be readily and easily applied to the paper cup.
The invention, together with its objects and advantages, will be best understood from a study of the following description, taken inconnection with the accompanying-drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a paper cup having the handle associated therewith, coacting parts of the handle being separated.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 with the cooperating portions of the handle inter-engaged.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 3. 9
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, it will be seen that 5 indicates generally a paper cup of known and conventional construction. The improved handle for the cup is indicated by the reference numeral 6 and is formed from thin cardboard or other suitable and de-, structible material. The handle 6, as will be noted, is formed from a single blank of the desired and selected material cut, shaped, and dimensioned to provide an attaching'portion 7 that is adhesively secured to the wall of the cup as at 8, and foldable flap or handlesections 9 and 10 that areadapted, when the cup is to be used, to be folded back on the attaching portion 7 and then extended substantially radially to the cup as shown in Figures 3 and 4. One of the folds or handle sections, for example, the fold or handle section 9 at its free end is reversely folded upon itself to provide a fold 11 which, at its upper and lower edges, is permanently united with the section 9 as at 12 by adhesive or in any other suitable manner. The fold 11 thus united with the section 9 forms a pocket to receive a tongue 13 suitably formed on the free end of the fold or section 10 by cutting away the comers of the fold or section 10 at the free end thereof.
When the cup is packed for vending purposes,
the handle sections .9 and 10 are disposed about the cup, concentric thereto and in a manner clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2. With the sections 9 and 10 thus disposed about thecup it will be apparent that a plurality of such cups may be telescoped for vending from asuitable machine, and for packing and shipping purposes.
What is claimed is:
1. A handle for cups of destructible material comprising an attaching part adapted to be secured to the wall of the cup, and handle sections united with the attaching part and foldable relative thereto to extend in the cup, and inter-engaging means on the free ends of the sections for detachably connecting said ends of the sections in a manner to hold the same in a predetermined operative position relative to the cup.
2. In combination, a destructible cup, a destructible handle for the cup comprising an attaching part united to the wall of the cup, and handle-forming sections foldable relative to the attaching part into either aposition concentric to the cup or to a position substantially radial to the cup, optionally, and inter-engaging means on the free ends of the sections for detachably connecting said ends together to hold the sections in handle-forming position.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a paper cup having handle sections united with the wall thereof and foldable relative to the wall towards one another, one of said handle sections having a free end provided with a pocket, and the other of said handle sections having a free end provided with a tongue adapted to be inserted into the pocket for holding said sections in a predetermined handle-constituting position relative to the cup.
