`IMPROVEMENT IN COIN-HOLDERS.

` South Haven,i1 the county of Van Buren 'and State of Michigan', have invented a new ;and useful Improvement in Coin-Holders, of i which the following i's a specification;

" The object of my-invention is to provide a coin-holder to be used in connection with a money box or till, for holding coin in a coinpact form,fronwhich single pieces of money of various denominations may easily and quickly be taken.

Inthe accornpanying drawings, A designates the holder of my box or till, which is provided i 'with a series of charnbers or receivers, a, of a little greater diameter than the coin they are intended to receive and hold. Near the mouth of each of the chambers a is designated the denomination of the coin contained therein. Each chanber or receiver a is provided with `a slot, b, running vertically its entire length, I and outwardly sloping, said slot enabling a personto readilyand speedily observe and count, the exact` contents. The front consists of a series of para-llelograms, C, of unequal width, formed bythe area between said slot b, each parallelogran having an extension or ofl'set, c, on its under side, thereby causing a broad recess or opening, d, to be formed separately for each receiver, to admit of the withdrawal of the lowermost coin. The lower or under side of the till or holder is covcrcd by a plate, D, made of metal or other suitable inaterial, rigidly secured thereto, the same having U-shaped openings cut therein, and concentric with the opening, the diameter of which being less than that of the receiver, the several arms b', formed by said U-shaped open- `ings, being attached tothe extensions or offsets directly over them.

The space between the plate D and the under side of the parallelogram C is just sufi'- ciently large to admit of one piece only being withdrawn at a time.

By reason of the coin being withdrawn from below, and in so simple a manner, I need neither spring nor follower to keep the coin constantly in position, they keeping in proper position by their own gravity. The weight of the uppermost coins presses the under one into its bed, forned by plate D, and when it is withdrawn another quickly follows. So on until there is but one left, which will naturally fall onto the same bed, and can be withdrawn through recess d as easily and in the same way as the previous ones had been.

By passing the finger under the coin, and holding it in gentle contact thercwith, the under-most one will be removed simultaneously with the withdrawal of the fin ger.

My coin-holder is not to be rigidly attached to the money-drawer, but is secured thereto by means of dovetail grooves or wedge-shaped slots d', formed in the rear side, running part of the way only, which slots are slipped over the heads of screws attached to the drawer.

It is obvious, however, that other suitable fastenings may be employed. It can be taken Conveniently, in making change, to any part of the store, and-at night can be transferred very readily to the safe.

I am aware that boxes for holding coin in a ,series of annular chambers or tubes have been before known and used, and Ido not, therefore, claim them, broadly; but

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A coin-holder composed of the block A, provided with holes for the reception of coin of difi'erent denominations, each hole having a slot its entire length, said block being further provided with a sheet-metal base, l), and the dovetail recesses d HENRY E. DEWEY.
