2 Claims.
This invention relates to the ornamentation of sheet rubber.
The principal object of the invention is to provide coloring of the sheet in a determinate pattern.
Other objects will appear from the following description and drawing.
Of the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view of the printing apparatus used taken on a vertical plane.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showbeing broken away. Referring to the drawing, in practicing the invention a sheet of soft vulcanized rubber 10 is molded from rubber surface having raised composition to provide a portions 11 defined by depressed areas 12 therebetween. Any desired design may be employed. In that shown in the drawing the depressed portions are grooves intersecting each other at right angles to define raised rectangles 11 there'b'etween.
After the sheet hasbeen vulcanized to prosheet of resilient material which comprises per- 25 vide the desired surface design it is passed between rollers. such as 13, 14, one of which is coated with ink or other coloring matter different from the color of the sheet.
containing rubber is pr In order to provide means are provided for inked roll 14. A suit A colored ink eferred.
for continuous printing progressively coating the able device comprises a frame 15 in which the roller 14 is journaled, a roll 16 also journaled in the frame in position to contact with roll 14 in rolling engagenient and a pan 1'7 to contain the ink 18 in which the roll 16 is partially immersed. 5
A doctor bar 19 is provided to contact with the roll 16 and distribute the ink uniformly.
The pressure roll 13 is journaled in boxes 20 slidably mounted in the frame 15 and screws 21 are provided to force the roll 13 toward the 10 roll 14. Various modifications of the effect may be obtained by varying the pressure whereby the raised portions of the sheet are caused to flatten out and receive a coating over a larger area.
I claim:
'1. The method of making an ornamental sheet of resilient material which comprises permanently forming a sheet of resilient rubber having raised portions on one face thereof, from a suitable compound of one color, and changing 20 the appearance of the sheet by applying ink of another color to the raised portions of the sheet.
2. The method of making an ornamental manently forming a sheet of rubber to provide a design having raised and depressed portions, and applying a coating of coloring matter to the raised portions by application of pressure without coating the depressed portions. 30
I FRANK IEENTON.
