My invention relates to slub yarn producing attachments for spinning frames. Slub yam as known in the trade consists of yarn having at spaced intervals therein slubs of larger diameter than the more finely twisted yarn.
While I am aware that other types of slub yarn producing attachments or means built right into the spinning frame have been provided, most of these have functioned on a mutilated type of gear principle, in which in order to have any selective spacings of the slubs at all a large plurality of different types of mutilated gears have had to be provided.
An object of my invention is to provide an attachment for producing slub yarn in which the spacings between the slubs and the diameter of the slubs may be more easily andaccurately varied than in any other device hitherto known for this purpose.
A further difficulty with mutilated gear types has been that it has been very difiicult to adjust accurately the spacings of the slubs on changes in the length of the fibres employed. In other words, in a mutilated gear type of device the distance between the slubs has been determined by the over all length of stock being used and then with only very indifferent results due to the ends breaking, gears coming out of mesh, or being put in too tight and riding the rims where the teeth have been removed.
A further feature of my invention is to provide a device for making slub yarn, which can be readily attached to existing types of spinning frames with substantially no change therein and which by a simple operation may be readily disconnected therefrom to permit the usual manufacture of straight yarn.
A further feature of my invention is to provide a device in which the draft may be readily changed to accommodate changes in the length of fibres being processed through 'a variety of points of changeability, namely, the usual front roll draft gear, the cam gear I preferably employ and a sprocket and sprocket gear connection I- preferably employ in the second speed connection, changes in the circumferential position or number of cams on the cam plate, changes in the spacings of the cams employed and changes in the circumferential length of the cams employed.
It is thus readily obvious that I have provided a device which may be readily changed and adjusted to accurately produce almost any desired type of slub yarn and in which the relative parts may be readily adjusted to keep the device in an operative connection after said changes.
A further feature of my invention relates to the fact that I am enabled through the second speed clutch connection I preferably employ and one way clutch I preferably interpose in the nor,-' mal speed connection between the front and back roll shafts to provide a device which will continuously function to produce accurate slub yarn without any substantial strain on the parts thereof, thus tending to provide a longer life for the mechanism than the mutilated gear type hitherto employed where thereis considerable shock to the mechanism as the mutilated gears go in and out of mesh.
These and such other objects of my invention as may hereinafter appear will be best understood 70 from a description of the accompanying drawings which illustrate an embodiment thereof.

In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout, 12 diagrammatically illustrates portions of a spinning frame to which my invention may be attached.
I employ the word spinning frame to include the last drafting and twisting operation normal in the manufacture of slub yarn, although it is obvious that the slub yarn may be further stretched or treated or twisted with other types of yarn to form therewith many different types of irregular yarn. The spinning frame includes the usual bobbins 14 mounted on the usual bobbin rack 16 on the rear of saidspinning frame, the back rolls 18 normally driven by the back roll drive shaft 20, which is usually on the lower roll, the intermediate guide rolls 22 and 24, and the front rolls 26 usually positively driven by the front roll drive shaft 28 in the usual manner by suitable means' (not shown). In the normal spinning operation the front rolls 26 normally revolve at a greater speed than the back rolls 18 to give the usual draft to the fibres being spun. In general, the slub yarn is produced by increasing the speed of the back rolls 18 at spaced time controlled intervals to lessen the stretch between the front and back rolls 26 and 18, during these intervals to produce the slub, portions 30 of greater width and less twist than the intermediate portions 82 in said slub yarn 34 shown in Figs. 2 and 2. After the slub yarn 34 has been drafted between the front and back rolls 26 and 18,-the yarn is usually led downwards through the usual guides 36, passed through the spinning ring travellers 38 which revolve on the usual spinning rings 40 on the vertically reciprocatable' bolster 42 from which it passes radially inwardly to be wound on the bobbins 44, which are rotated by suitable driving means (not shown) revolving the pulleys 46 thereof. It is thus obvious that as the yarn is led from the front rolls 26 to the bobbins 44, that it is twisted by the rapidly revolving spinning ring travellers 38 into the usual yarn. Thus the usual spinning. operation may be separated into (1) the usual drafting operation which takes place between the front and back rolls 26 and 18 and (2) the twisting operation which takes place between the front rolls 26 and the bobbins 44.
Fig. 4 shows the usual and portion=of a spinning frame in which the front roll drive shaft 28 normally projects laterally through an end of said frame 48 and is usually mounted in a bearing 50 rigidly secured to a portion 52 of said frame. The back roll drive shaft 20 also normally projects over this same frame end portion 48 and is preferably mounted in the bearing 54, which is forwardly and backwardly adjustable over the slot, 56 in said frame portion 52 so that said back roll drive shaft 20 may be forwardly and backwardly adjusted relative to said front roll drive shaft 28 by moving the bearing plate 58 of said bearing 54 over said slot 56 and securing it to said frame portion 52 by the locking bolts 60 at adjustable spaced distances from said front roll drive shaft 28. The adjustment of theback roll drive shaft 20 from the front roll drive shaft 28 is normally inherently necessary for 'difierent'lengths of the fibres being twisted so as to draft them the maximum amount insofar as possible without relatively stretching them so far that the yarn may break.
I have also shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the normal reducing driving connection to normally drive the back roll shaft 20 at aless speed than said front roll shaft 28, said connection including 'the'usual changeable driving draft gear 62 rigidly mounted on the end of the front roll drive shaft 28 and the usual driven back roll drive shaft driving gear 64 mounted as usual on the end of said back roll drive shaft 20. A suitable driving connection is interposed between said changeable draft gear 62 and driven gear 64 normally comprising a reducing gear connection 66 to drive the back roll drive shaft 20 at a lesser speed than the front roll drive shaft 28 to impart the usual draft to the yarn. I have shown in the drawings such a standard type of reducing connection 66, which includes the stub shaft 68 having the inner end '70 thereof slidably mounted in the bracket '72 provided with the central slot '74 therein so as to be obliquely vertically and horizontally forwardly and backwardly adjustably mounted on said frame to accommodate different size changeable draft ears 62. The lower end '76 of said bracket, is secured to a bearing block '78 secured to said frame portion 48 by means of the adjustable locking bolt 80 slidable horizontally in the horizontally extending slot 82 in said portion 48 and relatively slidably obliquely in the slot '74 of said bracket '72.
In certain instances the slot 82 is not provided in a spinning frame not modified for my invention, but the usual bracket '72 shown is provided to permit, an oblique adjustment of the stub shaft 68 for changes in the size of the draft gear 62. In the usual types of devices of this description, said connection 66 also includes a sleeve 84 rotatably mounted on said stub shaft 68 provided at the 'roll driveshaft28 and back roll drive shaft 20 may be madeas usual by changing the size and number of teeth in the changeable draft gear 62 and suitably adjusting the position of the stub shaft 68 in the bracket '72 and if desired the position of its mounting in the slot 82.
' So much of my invention hitherto described relates to the standard drive interposed between the front roll drive shaft 28 and back roll drive shaft 20, which is normally a reducing drafting drive so as to drive the back rolls 18 at a less speed than the front rolls 26 for the usual drafting operation on the spinning frame. I have described these in such detail in order that the functioning and structure of the parts added by my invention may be more thoroughly understood. Broadly speaking, I provide a second speed driving connection 90 between said front roll drive shaft 28 and back roll drive shaft 20 and I provide clutch means 94 actuated by said front roll drive shaft at time controlled intervals to connect said second speed connection 90 to said back roll drive shaft 20. In my preferred embodiment the means for'throwing in the second speed connection at time controlled intervals preferably consists of cam means '92 continuously driven by said front roll.drive shaft 28 and clutch means 94 actuated by said cam means to intermittently engage said different or slub second speed connection between said 30 in said yarn and preferably at a speed substantially equal to that of the front roll drive shaft so that there will be substantially no draft imparted to the yarn between said rolls durin the intervals of production of the slub portions 30. To look at the matter from a different point or view, I employ a rotatable means 96 normally driven by said front roll drive shaft 28 at a different preferably greater speed than said back roll drive shaft 20 and clutch means 94 actuated by said rotatable cam means at cam controlled intervals to engage said rotatable means 96 revolving at a different speed from the normal drafting speed of said back roll drive shaft 20 with said back roll drive shaft to selectively increase the rotative speed of said back roll drive shaft at selective cam controlled intervals.
In order to prevent over-running and breaking of teeth in the gear connection 66 when said back roll drive shaft 20 and gear 64 thereof is driven at a greater speed than the normal speed imparted thereto by said draft gear 62, I interpose a one-way clutch 98 in said gear connection 66. In my preferred embodiment shown and as shown more particularly in Figs. 4 and 9, instead of directly mounting the outer driven gear 88 of said reducing gear connection 66 directly on the sleeve 84 I loosely mount it on the stub shaft 68 and I pivotally attach the pawl 100 to one side thereof through the medium of the pawl bolt 102. I also provide the ratchet gear 104 rigidly mounted on said sleeve 84 immediately under said pawl 100 and the spring 105 to urge said pawl into engagement with the ratchet gear 104. The'pawl 100 and ratchet gear 104 are preferably so mounted as to permit, on any rotation of the drive gear 62, the pawl 100 to positively fit in the ratchet teeth of the ratchet gear 104 to be driven thereby to positively drive said gear 88 and front roll drive shaft gear 64, yet to permit on a greater relative revolution of said back roll drive shaft gear 64, the pawl 100 to slide over the ratchet teeth of the gear 104 to provide an over-running connection therefor without causing any strain on the intermediate gear connection 66. The inner end of the stub shaft 68 is provided with the head 69 adapted to abut the side of the bracket 72 and the front end of the stub shaft is provided with the locking nut 71 to secure said intermediate gear connection 66 in operative connected position and permitting revolution of the sleeve 84 and gear 88 on said stub shaft.
In my preferred embodiment, I mount the rotatable means 96 and clutch 94 on said back roll drive shaft 20 and for this purpose I preferably construct these elements as follows. The rotatable element or means 96 preferably comprises the axially stable clutch sleeve 106 loosely rotatably mounted on said back roll drive shaft 20 having a driven high speed sprocket gear 108 rigidly keyed thereto, or otherwise-mounted thereon as at 110 (Fig. 10) and the clutch face 112 on the outer end thereof retained in stable relation on said shaft by the collars 109 and 111 rigidly secured to said shaft. As the other clutch element I provide the axially slidable sleeve 114 splined as at 116 to said back' roll drive shaft 20 having the clutch face 118 on the inner end thereof inside of said driven gear 64. It is thus obvious that when the clutch face 118 on the axially slidable clutch sleeve 114 positively splined to-said back roll drive shaft 20 is brought into engagement with the clutch face 112 of the axially stable sleeve 106 that the speed of rotation of the back roll drive shaft 20 will be increased substantially to that of the sleeve 106 and front roll drive shaft The second speed connection from the front roll drive shaft 28 includes not only the changeable sprocket gear 108 keyed to the sleeve 106, but also the changeable sprocket gear 120 detachably rigidly mounted on the front roll drive shaft 28 and the sprocket chain 122 meshing with said changeable sprocket gears 120 and 108 on said front rolldrive shaft 28 and axially stable sleeve 106 on said back roll drive shaft 20. It is thus apparent that through the medium of the sprocket gears and chain the sleeve 106 or means 96 will be normally driven at a different, preferably increased rotative speed to that of the back roll drive shaft 20 continuously driven through the medium of the usual reducing gearing connection 66 and it is obvious that if the slidable clutch 118 be moved into engagement with the axially stable clutch 112 that inasmuch as the slidable sleeve 114 is directly splined to said back roll drive shaft '20 that the speed of the back roll drive shaft and back rolls will be correspondingly increased. It is apparent, however, that the relative speeds of said front roll drive shaft 28 and axially stable sleeve 106 may be correspondingly varied by changing the size and number of teeth in the changeable sprocket gears 120 and 108 and if desired the number of links in the sprocket chain 122. It,is also obvious that suitable changes in this connection must be made as the back roll drive shaft is adjusted relatively to said front roll drive shaft.
As stated hitherto, I also provide cam controlled means preferably continuously operated to regulate the time intervals of throwing in and out of said clutch 94 to vary the respective speed 7 of said back roll drive shaft 20. While this may be constructed in any suitable manner, I preferably suitably revolvably mount said cam means 92 on the frame. For this purpose I mount the stub shaft 121 on a bracket 123 upstanding from said frame. A sleeve 124 is loosely mounted on said stub shaft 121, preferably near the front thereof and loosely retained thereon by the nut 125. A cam plate 126 is rigidly secured to the front end of said sleeve 124 and a changeable cam gear 128 is keyed as at 129 or otherwise secured to the inner end of said sleeve 124. To drive the cam gear 128, I provide the intermediate idler gear 130 suitably preferably adjustably mounted on said frame. Said gear 130 is preferably driven by the inner stub shaft gear 86 to drive the cam gear 128. Said intermediate idler gear is preferably mounted on'a bracket 131 slotted ,as at 134 and preferably provided at its upper end with the split collar 135 adjustably mounted on said stub shaft 121 and secured thereto in adjustable positions thereon by means of the screw 136. Said collar 135 is preferably mounted on said stub shaft 123 back of said sleeve 124., As stated hitherto, the cam gear 128 is changeable and it is apparent that with the construction which I have provided that. with changes in the draft gear 62 or cam gear 128 that the set screw 136 may be loosened, the collar 135 adjustably rotated on said stub shaft 121 to the desired position and the idler gear stub shaft 138 may be adjustably mounted in the slot 134 and secured therein by the nut 140 on the bolt 141 at the desired adjusted position thereon.
The rotatable cam means 92 may if desired, be constructed in one piece with the desired cam projections thereon. For ease of adjustability of the cam projections to vary the length of and distance-between said slubs 30 I preferably provide the separate cam elements 144. The cam plate 126 thus has a flat outer face 146 and is provided with the preferably equally circumferentially spaced radially equi-distant holes 138 therein. The cam members 144 are preferably of segmental formand are provided with the outer inclined or rounded cam faces 147, the central bolt hole 148 therein and if desired with the cam plate over-lapping edge 150 for more securely non-pivotally attaching them to the cam plate 126. I have shown in'Fig. 5 two cam elements 144 of equal width and a camelement 144 of less width, each provided with the outer cam face 147. It is thus obvious that to secure the cam elements 144 at adjustable positions on the cam plate 126 that the locking bolts 152 may be passed through the respective holes 148 in the cam elements 144 and circumferentially spaced holes 138 in the cam plate 126 and secured there- I to at adjustable positions thereon by said lockingbolts 152 which are preferably inserted from the rear of said cam plate and into the threaded holes 148 in said individual cam elements. It is'thus apparent that by varying the length of said cam members and selectively inserting them in different holes 138 in said cam plate that the portions of finer twist 32 between the slubs 30 in the yarn may be correspondingly varied and that the length of the cam surfaces 147 regulate the lengths of the slub portions 30 and lengths of the yarn portions 32 therebetween.
To actuate the slidable clutch element 114 through the medium of the cam means 92, I preferably pivotally mount the clutch lever 154 on said frame. While this may be done in any. suitable manner, I mount the cross shaft 160 on a suitable bearing 162 in the bracket 123 intermediate said back roll shaft 20 and cam plate shaft 121 and I mount the collar 164 on said cross shaft 160 having a portion 166 depending therefrom having a radial hole 168 therein. The downwardly projecting pivot rod 170 is radially adjustably mounted in saidhole 168 and secured at adjustable positions thereon by means of the set screw 165. It is thus obvious that the pivot rod 170 is adjustably' extensibly mounted on said shaft 160 and that said shaft may be rotated I relative to its bearing 162 to vary the depending angle of said pivot rod 170 if desired for changes in cam gears, etc. The clutch lever of the first class 154 is pivotally mountedcentrally thereof on said depending rod 170 and is providedwith a yoke 172 at the front end thereof having yoke arms 174 adapted to straddle the sleeve 114 and provided with the bifurcated ends 173 adapted to receive the pins 175 projecting radially outwardly from the split collar 177 which is nonrotatably loosely contained in the groove 176 in said sleeve 114. The rear end 178 of said clutch lever 154 is adapted to be abutted by said cam elements 144 or cam means 92 and for this purpose is preferably provided with a roller 180 suitably rotatably mounted on suitable means 182 projecting inwardly therefrom. It is thus apparent that as said roller 180 and/or end 178 is forced outwardly by said cams thatthe yoke 172 in the front end of said clutch lever will be forced inwardly to cause the slidable clutch sleeve 114 to move inwardly to cause the clutch face 118 thereof to engage the axially stable clutch face 112 of the more fastly rotating axially stable clutch sleeve 106 to drive said back roll shaft intermittently at greater speeds when the rear end of said clutch lever is actuated by said cams 144.
I provide suitable means to normally urge the rear end 178 of said clutch lever 154 against said cams 144 and for this purpose in my preferred embodiment I provide the arm 183 projecting rearwardly from the bearing 158 having the bearing 186 on the inner end thereof adapted to receive the cross shaft 184, which is adapted to project through a suitable hole 188 in the rear end of said clutch lever 154. The outer end of said cross shaft 184 is provided with the collar 190 rigidly secured thereto and an expansible spring 192 is provided to push said rear end 178 inwardly, having one end thereof abutting said collar 190 and the other end abutting said end 178. To supplement the action of the expansible or push spring 192 the tension or pull spring 194 is also preferably provided having the inner end thereof connected to an extension 196 from said bearing 186 and the outer end thereof connected to a set screw 198 on the rear end 178 of said clutch lever 154. I have found that by combining a pull spring 194 with a push spring 192 I am enabled to obtain better and more even results.
To support the outer end of said back roll drive shaft 20 I may provide the extensible bracket 200 having the rear end thereof rigidly connected to said frame by the locking bolt 202 and the front end thereof suitably secured by the lock nut 204 to the outer end of said back roll drive shaft 20. Said rod 200 is preferably broken into the rear portion 206 and the front portion 208, each provided with the slots 210 adjacent said other portions. It is thus obvious that the length of said rod 200 may be varied by telescopically varying the relativepositions thereof and securing them together by the locking bolts 212 extending through said slots and it is apparent that this supporting arm 200 is made extensible so as to provide for different spacings of the back roll drive shaft 20 from the front roll drive shaft 28.
The operation of my improved device is apparent from the above description. The front roll drive shaft 28 is rotated as usual and through the medium of the reducing train of gearing normally drives the back roll shaft at the desired reduced drafting speed. The front roll drive shaft 28 also through the medium of the second speed drive 90 drives the supplemental rotatable element, namely; the axially stable clutch sleeve 106 on said shaft 20 normally at a greater speed than that of revolution of the shaft 20. The cam means 92 is also suitably revolved by the front roll drive shaft at a continuous speed and at various intervals in the revolution thereof, due
to the positioningof the cams, the cam lever 154 is moved so as to bring the axially slidable clutch 118 into positive engagement with said axially stable clutch 112 to rotate said back roll drive shaft 20 at the increased speed of said sec ond speed drive 90, the spring means 192194 functioning to press the rear end 178 of said clutch lever against said cams and when said end is pressed in the spaces or depressions between said cams, it is obvious that the front end of said lever will be moved outwards, thus causing the axially slidable clutch to be moved outwards and the clutch faces 112 and 118 separated so as to release the back roll drive shaft 20 from the increased speed of the second speed drive 90 and permit the back roll drive shaft to drive through the normal primary train of gearing at its usual drafting speed, it being obvious that the slub portions 30 are formed when the back roll drive shaft is driven at said increased speeds just described. The one-way clutch 98 functions to permit the back roll drive shaft 20 to be driven at a. greater speed than that produced by the primary driving gearing.
It is also apparent that my improved slub spinning attachment is provided with means to move the additional parts thereof just described continuously out of mesh with said normal speed reducing driving means to make straight yarn. To disconnect the high speed features of my invention, it is merely necessary to loosen the screw 136 and rotate the bearing 135 and connected stub shaft 138, the bracket 132 and intermediate gear 130 so as to bring the intermediate gear 130 out of mesh with its intermeshing gear 86 to permit no revolution of said cam shaft and moving said cam plate 126 to permit said spring means 19'. and 194 to force said end 1'78 in a position between the cams 144 to move the axially slidable clutch 118 continuously out of engagement with the axially stable clutch 112.
It is also apparent that I have provided many types of adjustment or changeability for varying the types of slub yarn produced by my invention. To vary the length of the slub the length of the cams 144 may be varied. To vary the location of the spacings 34 between said slubs the position of the cams 144 on the cam plate 126 may be varied. In practice the cams vary in length from three quarters of an inch to two inches in my preferred construction. Hitherto, in former types of slub yarn producing devices one of the drive shafts has stopped entirely relative to the other. By continuously driving both drive shafts, I am enabled to produce a better slub than any produced hitherto. ing the draft gear 62 that both the diameter of the slubs, length of slubs and spacing of the slubs may be varied and that changing the driving or driven sprockets 120 and 108 also yaries the length of the slubs. may the distances apart of the slub portions 30 and lengths of the slubs be correspondingly varied. As stated hitherto, my attachment is adapted for spinning frames for intermediate or final slub yarn product. If desired, the slub yarn may be further twisted, looped, or twisted with other yarn to produce a large variety of interesting and pretty slub yarn effects. It is apparent that I have provided a novel type of slub yarn producing attachment for spinning frames, which will produce an even and tight slub, in which the slub may be readily varied in the manners hitherto explained and which itself consists of a simple attachment for spinning frames for this purpose constructed of a minimum number of relatively cheap, positively acting parts with the advantages hitherto explained.
It is understood that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiments shown or methods described and that various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:

A slub yarn producing attachment for spin-' ning frames having a front roll drive shaft, a back roll drive shaft and means driven by said front roll drive shaft to continuously drive said back roll drive shaft, rotatable means, means driven by said front roll drive shaft to drive said rotatable means at a different speed from said back roll drive shaft, clutch means connecting said rotatable means with said back roll drive shaft, rotatable cam means, means continuously actuated by said front roll drive shaft to rotate said cam means, cam elements selectively adjustably mounted on said cam means and means actuated by said cam elements to actuate said clutch at cam controlled intervals to vary the speed of said back roll drive shaft.

A slub yarn producing attachment for spinning frames having a front roll drive shaft and a back roll drive shaft driven thereby, -a normal drafting speed driving connection between said shafts, a supplemental different slub speed driving connection between said shafts, driven cam means and clutch means actuated by said cam means to'intermittently engage said different slub speed connection between said shafts.

A slub yarn producing attachment for spinning frames, including a front roll drive shaft and a back roll drive shaft driven thereby, a normal speed driving connection between said shafts, a second speed driving connection between said shafts and clutch means actuated by said front roll drive shaft at time controlled intervals to additively connect said second speed connection to said shafts.

A slub yarn producing attachment for spinning frames, including a front roll drive shaft and a back roll drive shaft driven thereby, a normaldrafting speed driving connection between said shafts, 'a second speed driving connection between said shafts and clutch means actuated by said front roll drive shaft at time controlled intervals to connect said second speed connection to said shafts and means to detach said second speed connection from said back roll drive shaft to permit normal operation of said spinning frame.

A slub yarn producing attachment for spinning frames having a drivenfront roll drive shaft having a changeable driving draft gear mounted thereon, a back roll drive shaft forwardly and backwardly adjustable relative there- 'to having a driven gear mounted thereonand a reducing gear connection meshing with said driving and driven gears to normally drive said back roll shaft from said front roll shaft at a reduced speed, a one way clutch interposed in said reducing gear connection to permit faster movement of said back roll shaft driven gear relative to said front roll shaft driving draft gear, an axially stable clutch sleeve loosely mounted on said back roll shaft having a clutch element thereon, an axially slidable sleeve splined to said back roll shaft having a cooperating clutch element thereon, changeable means driven by said front roll shaft to drive said axially stable sleeve at selective speeds, a cam plate rotatably mounted on said frame, a changeable cam gear for driving said cam plate, means actuated by said changeable draft gear to continuously drive said cam gear, a plurality of cams having inclined cam surfaces attached to said cam plate at spaced circumferential distances thereon, a'clutch lever pivotally adjustably mounted on said frame having an end loosely secured to said axially slidable clutch sleeve and an end adapted to be abutted by said cams to cause engagement of said clutch elements to drive said back roll shaft through said driven axially stable sleeve, means normally urging said clutch lever end against said cam plate and cams and means to adjust said aforedescribed elements to permit relative movement of said front and back roll shafts, changing of said draft gear, cam gear and/or laterally stable clutch sleeve driving means and to maintain said gears and driving means in operative connection.

A slub yarn producing attachment for spinning frames having a driven front roll drive shaft having a driving draft gear mounted thereon, a back roll drive shaft having a driven gear mounted thereon and a reducing gear connection meshing with said driving and driven gears to normally drive said back roll shaft from said front roll shaft at a reduced speed, a one way clutch interposed in said reducing gear connection to permit faster movement of said back roll shaft driven gear relative to said front roll shaft driving draft gear, an axially stable clutch sleeve loosely mounted on said back roll shaft having a clutch element thereon; an axially slidable sleeve splined to said back roll shaft having a cooperating clutch element thereon, means driven by said front roll shaft to drive said axially stable sleeve at a different speed from said back roll shaft, a cam plate rotatably mounted on said frame, a cam gear for driving said cam plate,
- means actuated by said draft gear to continuously drive said cam gear, a plurality of cams having inclined cam surfaces attached to said cam plate at spaced circumferential distances thereon, a clutch lever pivotally mounted on said frame having an end loosely secured to said axially slidable-clutch sleeve and an end adapted to be abutted by said cams to cause engagement of said clutch elements to drive said back roll shaft through said driven axially stable sleeve and means normally urging said clutch lever end against said cam plate and cams.

A slub yarn producing attachment. for spinning frames having a driven front roll drive shaft having a changeable driving draft gear mounted thereon, a back roll drive shaft forwardly and backwardly adjustable relative thereto having a driven gear mounted thereon, a gear connection meshing with said driving and driven gears to normally drive said back roll shaft from said front roll shaft at a different speed, a one way clutch interposed in said reducing train of gearing to permit movement of said back roll shaft driven gear relative to said front roll shaft driving draft gear, an axially stable clutch sleeve loosely mounted on said back roll shaft having a a clutch element thereon, an axially slidable sleeve splined to said back roll shaft having a cooperating-clutch element thereon, changeable means driven by said front roll shaft to drive said axially stable sleeve at selective speeds, a cam plate rotatably mounted on said frame, a changeable cam gear for driving said cam plate, means actuated by said changeable draft gear to continuously drive saidcam gear, a plural ty of cams having inclined cam surfaces attached to said cam plate at spaced circumferential disstances thereon, a clutch lever pivotally adjustably mounted on said frame having an end loosely secured to said axially slidable clutch sleeve and an end adapted to be abutted by said cams to cause engagement of said clutch elements to drive said back roll shaft through saFd driven axially stable sleeve, means normally urging said clutch lever end against said cam plate and cams and means to adjust said elements to permit relative movement of sad front and back roll shafts, changing of said draft gear, cam gear, -and/or laterally stable clutch sleeve driving means and to maintain said gears and driving means in operative connection.

A slub yarn producing attachment for spinning frames having a driven front roll drive shaft having a changeable driving draft gear shaft from said front roll shaft at a different speed; a one way clutch interposed in said gear connection to permit movement of said back roll shaft driven gear relative to said front roll shaft driving draft gear, an axially stable clutch sleeve loosely mounted on said back roll shaft having a clutch element thereon, an axially slidable sleeve splined to said back roll shaft having a cooperating clutch element thereon, changeable means driven by said front roll shaft to drive said axially stable sleeve at selective speeds, changeable revolvable cam means having an axially variable cam surface rotatably mounted on said frame, a changeable cam gear for driving said cam means, means actuated by said changeable draft gear to continuously drive said changeble cam gear, a clutch lever pivotally adjustably mounted on said frame having an end loosely secured to said axially slidable clutch sleeve and an end adapted to be abutted by said cam means to cause engagement of said clutch elements to drive said back roll shaft through said driven axially stable sleeve, means normally urging said clutch lever end against said cam means and means to adjust said aforedescribed elements to permit relative movement of said front and back roll shafts, changing of said draft gear, cam gear and/or laterally stable clutch sleeve driving means and to maintain said gears and driving back roll shaft from said front roll shaft at a different speed; a one way clutch interposed in said gear connection to permit movement of said back roll shaft driven gear relative to said front roll shaft driving draft gear, an axially stable clutch sleeve loosely mounted on said back roll shaft having a clutch element thereon, an axially slidable sleeve splined to said back roll shaft having a cooperating clutch element thereon, means driven by said front roll shaft to drive said axially stable sleeve at a different speed from said back roll shaft, a cam plate rotatably mounted on said frame, a cam gear for driving said cam plate, means actuated by said draft gear to continuously drive said cam gear, a plurality of cams having cam'surfaces attached to said cam plate at spaced circumferential distances thereon, a clutch lever pivotally mounted on said frame having an end loosely secured to said axially slidable clutch sleeve and an end adaptedto be abutted by said cams to cause engagement of said clutch elements to drive said back roll shaft through said driven axially stable sleeve and means normally urging said clutch lever end against said cam plate and cams.

A slub'yam producing attachment for spinning frames having a driven front roll drive shaft having a driving draft gear mounted thereon, a back roll drive shaft having a driven gear mounted thereon, a gear connection meshing with said driving and driven gears to normally drive said back roll shaft from said front r011 shaft at a different speed; a one way clutch interposed in said gear connection to permit faster movement of said back roll shaft driven gear relative to said front roll shaft driving draft gear, an axially stable clutch sleeve loosely mounted on said back roll shaft having a clutch element thereon, an axially slidable, sleeve splined to said back roll shaft mounted on said frame having an end loosely secured to said axially slidable clutch sleeve and an end adapted to be abutted by said cam means to cause engagement of said clutch elements to drive said back roll shaft through said driven axially stable sleeve and -means normally urging said clutch lever end against said cam means.
20. Aslub yarn producing attachment for spinning frames having a driven front roll drive shaft having a changeable driving draft gear mounted thereon, a back roll drive shaft forwardly and backwardly' adjustably mounted on said frame to vary the distance between said front and back rolls having a driven gear mounted on the outer end thereof and a stub shaft mounted intermediate said front and back rolls obliquely vertically and horizontally forwardly and backwardly adjustably mounted on said frame to accommodate different size changeable draft gears having a driven gear thereon in mesh with said draft gear and a driving gear connected thereto in mesh with said back roll shaft driven gear, said gears being of a size to normally reduce the relative speed of said back roll shaft; a laterally stable clutch sleeve loosely mounted on said back roll drive shaft having a driven changeable high speed sprocket gear mounted thereon and a clutch face on the outer end thereof and a movable clutch sleeve slidably splined to said back roll shaft having a clutch face on the inner end thereof inside of said driven gear, a changeable sprocket gear mounted on said front roll shaft, a sprocket chain meshing with said changeable sprocket gears on said front roll shaft and back roll shaft laterally stable sleeve to normally drive said inner clutch sleeve at a greater speed than said back roll shaft,
said intermediate stub shaft having said driving gear loosely mounted thereon and a pawl mounted laterally thereof and said reducing driven gear being mounted on a sleeve mounted on said stub shaft having a ratchet gear mounted thereon adapted to be engaged by said pawl to drive said driving gear and to permit a faster movement of said driving gear relative to said driven gear, a stub shaft mounted on said frame in rear of said back roll drive shaft, a collar adjustably mounted on the inner end of said stub shaft having a slotted bracket depending therefrom, a sleeve having a cam plate on the outer end thereof having a plurality of circumferentially spaced holes extending laterally therethrough and a changeable cam gear keyed to the inner end thereof mounted on said stub shaft, cam members having outer inclined cam surfaces selectively bolted within said holes at spaced circumferential distances on said cam plate, a stub shaft rigidly adjustably mounted within said depending bracket slot, an idler gear mounted on said stub shaft driven by said intermediate stub shaft driven gear and driving said cam gear, a bracket projecting upwardly from said frame intermediate said back roll shaft and cam plate shaft, a cross shaft rigidly mounted thereon, a downwardly depending adjustable extensible pivot rod mounted thereon and a clutch lever of the first class pivotally mounted thereon having a yoke at the front end thereof pivotally attached to said slidable clutch sleeve and a roller at the rear end thereof adapted to contact said revolving cam plate and be forced outwardly by said cams to force the front end thereof inwardly to engage the slidable clutch face with said laterally stable high speed clutch face todrive saidback roll shaft intermittently at greater speeds, a push spring and a pull spring connected to the inner end of said lever and frame to normally urge said roller against said cam plate and cams and an adjustably extensible supporting rod connecting the outer end of said back roll shaft with said frame, whereby said device may be adjusted to vary the spacing between said front and back roll shafts and to keep said gearing in mesh with changes in .the relative sizes of said sprocket gears, draft gear and cam gear.

A slub yarn producing attachment for spinning frames having a driven front rolldrive shaft having a changeable driving draft gear mounted thereon, a back roll drive shaft forwardly and backwardly adjustably mounted on said frame to vary the distance between said front and back rolls having a driven gear mounted ,on the outer end thereof and a stub shaft mounted intermediate said front and back rolls obliquely vertically and horizontally forwardly and backwardly adjustably mounted on said frame to accommodate different size changeable draft gears having a driven gear thereon'in mesh with said draft gear and a driving gear connected thereto in mesh with said back roll shaft driven gear, said gears being of a size to normally reduce the relative speed of said back roll shaft; a laterally stable clutch sleeve loosely mounted on said back roll drive shaft having a driven high speed sprocket mounted thereon and a clutch face on the outer end thereof and a movable clutch sleeve slidably splined to said back roll shaft having a clutch face on the inner end thereof inside of said driven gear, a changeable sprocket gear mounted on said front roll shaft, a sprocket chain meshing with said changeable sprocket gears on said front roll shaft and back roll shaft laterally stable sleeve to normally drive said inner clutch 12 sleeve at a greater speed than said back roll shaft, said intermediate stub shaft having said driving gear loosely mounted thereon and a pawl mounted laterally thereof and said reducing driven gear being mounted thereon adapted to be engaged by said pawl to drive said driving gear and to permit a faster movement of said driving gear relative to said driven gear, a stub shaft mounted on said frame in rear of said back roll' drive shaft, a collar adjustably mounted on the inner end of said stub shaft having a slotted bracket depending therefrom, a sleeve having a cam plate on the outer end thereof having a plurality of circumferentially spaced holes extending laterally therethrough and a changeable cam gear keyed to the inner end thereof mounted on said stub shaft, cam members having outer inclined cam surfaces selectively bolted within said holes at spaced circumferential distances on said cam plate, a stub shaft rigidly adjustably mounted within said depending bracket slot, an idler gear mounted on said stub shaft driven by said intermediate stub shaft driven gear and driving saidcam gear, a bracket projecting upwardly from said frame intermediate said back roll shaft and cam plate shaft, a cross shaft rigidly mounted thereon and a clutch lever of the first class pivotally mounted thereon having a yoke at the front end thereof pivotally attached to said slidable clutch sleeve and a roller at the rear end thereof adapted to contact said revolving cam plate and be forced outwardly by said cams to force the front end thereof inwardly to engage the slidable clutch face with said laterally stable high speed clutch face to drive said back roll shaft intermittently at greaterspeeds and means connected to the inner end of said lever and frame to normally urge said roller against said cam plate andcams, whereby said device maybe adjusted to vary the spacing between said front and back roll shafts and to keep said gearing in mesh with changes in the relative sizes of said sprocket gears, draft gear and cam gear.

A slub yarn producing attachment for spinning'frames having a driven front roll drive shaft having a driving draft gear mounted thereon, a back roll drive shaft mounted 011 said frame having a driven gear mounted thereon and a stub shaft mounted intermediate said front and back rolls on said frame having a driven gear thereon in mesh with said draft gear and a driving gear connected thereto in mesh with said back roll shaft driven gear, said gears being of a size to normally reduce the relative speed of said back roll shaft; 2. laterally stable clutch sleeve loosely mounted on said back roll drive shaft having a driven high speed sprocket gear mounted thereon and a clutch face on the outer end thereof and a movable clutch sleeve. slidably splined-to said back roll shaft having a clutch face on the inner end thereof inside of said driven gear, a sprocket gear mounted on said front roll shaft, a sprocket chain meshing with said sprocket gears on said front roll shaft and back roll shaft laterally stable sleeve to normally drive said inner clutch sleeve at a greater speed than said back roll shaft, said intermediate stub shaft having said driving gear loosely mounted thereon and a pawl mounted laterally thereof and said reducing driven gear being mounted on a sleeve mounted on said stub shaft having a ratchet gear mounted thereon adapted to be engaged by said pawl to drive said end thereof having a plurality of circumferentially spaced holes extending laterally therethrough and a cam gear splined -to the inner end thereof mounted on said stub shaft, cam members having outer inclined cam surfaces selectively bolted within said holes at spaced circumferential distances on said cam plate, a stub shaft rig idly adjustably mounted on said depending bracket, an idler gear mounted on said stub shaft driven by said intermediate stub shaft driven gear and driving said cam gear, a bracket projecting upwardly from said frame intermediate said back roll shaft and cam plate, a cross shaft rigidly- -mounted thereon a downwardly depending pivot rod mounted thereon and a clutch lever of the firstclass pivotally mounted on said frame having a yoke at the front end thereof pivotally attached "to said slidable clutch sleeve and a. rear end-adapted to contact said revolving cam plate and be forced outwardly by said cams to force the front end thereof inwardly to engage the slidable clutch face with said laterally stable high speed clutch face to drive said back roll shaft intermittently at greater speeds and means connected to said lever and frame to normally urge said lever end against said cam plate and earns.
