APPARATUS FOR THE UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION OF TOBACCO IN SPREADER OF A CIGARETTE MAKING MACHINE Filed Jan. 28, 1952 Patented Nov. 6, 1934 PATENT oFrlcs APPARATUS FOR THE UNIFORM DISTRIBU- TION OF TOBACCO IN THE SPREADER OF A CIGARETTE-MAKING MACHINE Alexander Herbert Kliix, Dresden, Germany, as
signor to Universelle Cigarettenmaschinen- Fabrik J. C. Muller & 00., Dresden, Germany I Application January 28,
1932, Serial No. 589,500
In Germany February 6, 1931 20 Claims; (Cl. 131-39) Methods-have already been proposed for deliveringthe cut tobacco to the tobacco spreaders of cigarette-making machines by. pneumatic means. Although it is possible in this manner to replenish the amount of tobacco which is being used, it does not solve the problem of distributing this quantity of tobacco during its passa'geffrom the separator into the spreader, in such manner that it forms an extremely even layer which exe tends over the entire tobacco spreader as far as the walls. This is, however, necessary in order to obtain a uniform performance of the spreader.
According to this invention an impact surface is placed in the path of the deliveryair, which impact surface corresponds to the length of the spreader rollers. l I
These surfaces are preferably reciprocated transversely to the longitudinal direction of the rollers varying the tobacco receiving space of the spreader. The surface may, however, be curved in such a way that the tobacco particles which arrive thereon are flung off downwards at an angle of dispersion, and this angle can be so adjusted that it covers the entire surface in question of the tobacco spreader. I y
In order to bring about a uniform distributio of the tobacco on the impact surface it is advisable to fit in front of the surface a wedgeshaped distributor against which the stream of tobacco impinges. This distributor can be adjusted in such manner that its apex is always directed towards the middle of the on-coming stream of tobacco. l
To enable the invention to be fully understood it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 is a plan. I
Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views.
The current of air carrying thetobacco is conducted into the separator 2 by means of the pipe 1. Between the pipe 1 and the separator '2 there is inserted a funnel-shaped member 3, the wide end of which is directed towards the separator 2.
' In the separator 2 there is arranged a metal plate 4 which extends over the entire width of the separator. To the metal plate 4, the horizontal part 4 of which overlaps the upper end 3 of the wide end of thefunnel-shaped member, there are attached two pins 5 which are passed into slots 6 of the upper wall 6 of the separator. The upper end of the pins 5 serve as pivots for the connecting rods 7, the otherends of which are pivotally attached to the crank pins 8 of discs 9. The discs 9 are mounted onashaft 10 which is mounted in a bearing 11. The latter is attached to a projection 12 of the distributor. On the shaft 10 there is also mounted a sprocket wheel 13 which is driven by a chain 14. On the metal plate 4 there is also attached a distributor 15 of triangular cross section, the deflecting sides of which are concave as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4. Figs. 3 and 4 are, respectively, sections on the lines 33 or 44 of Fig. 1.
The on-coming tobacco first of all impinges on the distributor l5 and is thereby distributed over the entire plate.
From the plate 4 a part of the tobacco flows downwards, and a part is scattered in the manner indicated in Fig. 1, so that it is uniformly distributed. Now, by the rotation of theshaft 10 the plate 4 is moved continually to and fro between the position indicated by full lines and that in dicated byv dotted lines, so that the tobacco is cli tributed over the entire surface at of the tobacco spreader "16. V
In order that the distribution of the tobacco may be asuniform as possible, it is absolutely necessary that the distributor member 15 should be exactly in the middle of the oncoming stream of tobacco. As shown for instance in Fig. 2, the pipe 1 may, however, be curved before it discharges into the distributor 2. In this casethe stream of tobacco would not be directed towards the middle of the tobacco distributor if the latter were exactly in the middle of the separator. vNow in order. in such cases to make it possible for the distributor member 15 to be located exactly in the middle of the oncoming stream of tobacco it is arranged adjustably on the plate 4. For this purpose the plate 4 is provided with a transverse slot 1'? through which the adjusting screw 18 of the distributor member 15 protrudes. Now, by adjusting the distributor member so that it comes into position in the middle of the stream of tobacco, it is easily possible to procure a uniform distribution of the tobacco over the surface a: of the tobacco. spreader, even if, owing to, bends in the pipes or the like, the stream of tobacco arrives obliquely in the separator.
Having thus described the nature of the said invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I claim:
