This invention relates to detachable heel caps for shoes and has for the primary object, the provision of means which will permit easy and quick application and removal of the cap from the heel of a shoe and will prevent relative movement between the cap and the heel when in use on the shoe.

With these and other objects-in view thisI invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had `Ito the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view illustrating a shoe with a capk applied to the heel thereof by means constructed in accordance with my invention.

50 Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a fragmentary portion of the upper of a shoe having a heel 2 of a conventional design and provided with a bore or opening extending therethrough for the purpose of receiv- 5 ing an attaching device 3 employed for removably securing a cap 4 to the heel and which permits the cap to be conveniently detached from the heel when worn so as to be replaced by another; thereby rendering a large saving in time and cost in recapping the heel and further permits a person to maintain the heel in perfect condition over a long period of time. Y

The cap 4 has a recess 5 formed in one face opening outwardly through the forward edge thereof for the purpose of receiving a substantially rectangular head 6 of ythe securing device 3. A metallic plate 7 of a corresponding shape to the cap is secured to the latter by nails, rivets or like fasteners and is provided with a ,slot 8 disposed over the recess 5 and opening through the forward edge of the plate for the purpose of receiving the securing device 3.

The securing device 3 consists of sections 9 `and lO'having telescopic and threaded connection with-each other and the section 10 is formed integrally with the head 6 while the section 9 has formed thereon a screw tightening head 11, that is, a head having a kerf or slot 12 for the purpose of receiving a screw driver or like tool for the purpose of rotating the section 9 on the section 10 to bring about adjustment of the sections relative to each other for the purpose of attaching and detaching the cap to the heel. It is to be understood that the head 11 is covered by the usual inner sole of the shoe.

With the head 6 positioned in the recess 5 with the section 10 extending through the slot 8 of the plate, the cap may be easily attached to the heel 2 by adjusting the section 9 relatively to the section 1G.

The plate '7 is provided with openings 13 for the purpose of receiving dowels 14 carried by the heel to prevent the plate from moving relative to the heel during the use of the device. The cap 4 is preferably constructed of leather, however, the same may be made from rubber or any other composition of material as shown at 15. The cap 15 is provided with a recess 5 and instead of having the plate 7 secured to one of the outer faces thereof, the plate is embedded within the cap as shown in Figures 8 and 9 during the vulcanizing of the material of the cap, the plate when used in connection with the capl 15 is provided with a series of elongated slots through which the material of the cap l5 may extend during the vulcanizing process for the purpose of firmly anchoring the plate in position within the cap.

Referring to my modified form of the invention, as shown in Figures 11 to 14 inclusive, the heel 16 is provided with a socket 17 to receive a stem 18 carried by a rectangular shaped head 19. The upper end of the stem 18 is provided with a shoulder or an enlargement 19' to be engaged by one end of a coiled expansion spring 20 surrounding the stem and bearing against a metallic plate 21 nailed or otherwise secured to the heel 16. The plate 21 is apertured to permit the stem 18 to slide therethrough for the purpose of permitting the head 19 thereof to be positioned within the recess 5 of the cap 4 or to be positioned in the type of cap disclosed in Figure 8. The action of the spring is to draw the head 19 tightly against the plate of the cap 4 and prevent displacement of the cap from the heel. The plate 21 securedl to the heel 16 is provided with lugs 22 iitting in` the openings 13 of the plate 'T to prevent the cap from having relative movement with respect to the heel.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a very efficient and practical means has been provided for detachably securing a cap to the heel so that when it is necessary to remove the cap it can be easily accomplished without the employment of special tools and permits a change to be quickly accomplished thereby saving labor and cost.

While I have showny and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be i understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed. v

Having described the invention, I claim:

1. In combination with a heel having a bore and a cap 4provided with a recess opening outwardly through one edge thereof and a slot in communication with said recess, arigid plate secured to the tread face of the heel and having an opening alining with the bore and recess, a stern extending of and -in communication with the recess, a stem through the opening of the plate and into the bore, a head carried by the stem and received in the recess of the cap with the stem extending through the slot, means urging the head to abut the walls of the recess with force and retaining the stem in the bore of the heel, and dowel pins to prevent turning of the cap on the heel.

2. In combination with a heel having a bore and ,a cap provided with a recess opening outwardly through one edge thereof, a rigidlplate secured to the tread face of the heel and having an opening alining with the bore and recess, a second rigid lplate secured to the cap over the recess and having a slot opening outwardly through one edge thereextendingthrough the opening of the rst plate and into the bore, a head carried by the stem and received inthe recess of the cap with the stem extending through the slot, an enlargement on the stern within the bore, and a coil spring on the stem between the first plate and the enlargement "to retain the stem in the bore with the head in abutting engagement with the second plate.

3. In combination with aheel having abore and a cap provided with a recess opening outwardly 11100 through one edge thereof, a rigid plate secured to the treadiace of the heel and having an opening alining with the bore and recess, a second rigid plate secured to the cap over the recess and having a slot opening outwardly through one edge'ilD thereof and in communication with the recess, a stem extending through the opening of the rst plate and into the bore, a head carried by the stem and received in the recess of the cap with the stem extending through the slot, and a sleeve T threaded to the stem and having a notched enlarged end held against endwise movement of the bore.
